My adopted son -- who speaks English as his third language -- has had a hard time getting the gist of the word "pretend." This book was the perfect explanation and the ending was surprisingly (and touchingly) appropriate for an adopted child. Wonderful whimsical illustrations.

I believe that all the Biscuit books are written very well and I know that my child loves them all. This book shows how the little girl and her dog Biscuit prepare for Mother's Day. It is written very well and I would recommend it to anyone with small children.

Another Biscuit holiday flap book that gets right to the point. This time it is Mother's Day and The-Girl-In-Purple-Sneakers and Biscuit are going to make it a special day for Mom and show how much they care. Gifts are made, Mom seeps in, and a special breakfast in bed are just the beginning of Mom's special day.

The book is packed with the typically adorable artwork that has been a backbone to the Biscuit series. The end flaps reveal what Biscuit is up to in his usual puppyish ways. All in all another good holiday book that is attractive and fun to read.

Frank Asch's simple illustrations are so soothing to children. My som loves to read his stories over and over. I don't mind reading them because they are so pleasing to look at. This book shows Ben bear who has painted a picture of his mother at school. Ben is bringing the picture home to her when he meets with many friends. Each friend offers a suggestion for improving the picture. In the end, the portrait of mama bear has the eyes of an owl, the teeth of an alligator, the mane of a lion and the neck of a girraf. Naturally, mama bear thinks it is the most beautiful picture ever and hangs it up. This is a very sweet story!

I bought this book when I was doing research for my new child care center. I loved it! It is easy to read and entertaining. At the same time it provides valuable information from an experienced profesional. I loan my copy to parents who are looking to enroll their child in my program. As a parent I could relate to the stories and information.

Excellent help!

This book is a goldmine. I never thought I would have to worry about choosing a daycare center, but after I decided (with much agony) to move my child into a center, a friend suggested I read it. I am so glad I did. I realize some of the mistakes I made in my first-choice of daycare, and feel much more confident this time around. I can't think of a single question she did not address in this book, and can't recommend it highly enough.

This book helped give me much more peace of mind than I would have thought possible. My only disappointment is that I don't live close enough to put my child in her center -- the author sounds wonderful!

This book is made up of short stories, partially true, which the author remembers from his childhood and later days. It is wonderful! He is a very amusing writer without being comical. He is 93 years young now and still writing with a sense of humor that will leave you smiling. My husband just finished it and he has a big smile on his face as he talks about it. I would highly recommend it.

My grandfather and William Kaufman were convalescing together as hospital roommates about six years ago. I visited every day and got to know Bill quite well; I've been close friends with him ever since. He lives on Long Island and gives readings of his stories every few months. I've had the extreme pleasure and edification of attending these events over the years. His mellifluous voice has been honeyed by decades of good living and his quick wit and insight into human psychology are astounding. His poignant, irreverent, and funny stories reanimate life from the early and mid-20th Century and present perspectives on morality, religion, and aging unprecedented in their eloquence. I'm recommending this book to everyone I know!

Lucille Lang Day has earned the five stars not so much with this one title, as with her larger body of work, of which "Fire in the Garden" is but a snapshot. Eclectic and electric, Day's poetry is a feast for the brain. Her delicious, evocative imagery will excite readers of contemporary poetry and sustain hope that it is not about to be suffocated by the dry and abstruse theoretician/practitioners who have spread across so many of the arts over the last few generations. May all take notice how feasible it is for poetry to be at once accessible and intellectually commanding.
Day takes inspiration from a wide variety of sources, including "Fire in the Garden"'s first entire section based on the paintings and sculpture of such artists as O'Keefe, Dali, Diebenkorn. and Manuel Neri, whose sculpture exhibit prompted her to create a poetic dialog between two opposing voices from within, the one weary and negative, and the other challenging the first with its vibrant call to poetic awakeness: "Spiders in my skull spin fiery webs / and wild birds beat against my bones. / They want out. I, too, want out. / I want to walk where dusk spreads/gold dust on the earth, the mountains / humming, and jays and juncos land / on pine branches shaped like lightning."
Readers in whom Day's work resonates should appeal to her to engineer a republication of her first book,
"Self-Portrait with Hand Microscope," which contains in its first quarter what I'm convinced must be some of the finest biology-oriented poetry ever written. Investing years of her life in science (in which she earned a doctorate from UC Berkeley) paid double dividends giving inspiration to such resplendent poetic expression. In some small way, human culture is cheated every year that goes by without the opportunity for people to enjoy that bright outlook on the natural world so brilliantly depicted in language.

Strong, sharp-edged poems in the surrealist tradition.

Review Date: 1999-02-16
In the tradition of the best surrealism, Lucille Day's poems display unusual combinations of images that cohere to present a personal, and at the same time universal, vision of everyday struggles--a vision probing the consoling powers of imagination, "the cool blue flight/of stars, flowing/through the endless black." Her powerful, sharp-edged, declarative poems speak to all of us.

Nancy's personal writing style is filled with charm and light humor. She makes you feel as if your are having a quiet cup of coffee together while she shares how Christ is involved in all areas of her life and my own. After reading it, I felt strengthened and encouraged.

Parables of God's involvement in EVERY day of our lives.

Nancy Hoag is a writer who is honest with her readers -- honest about her failures, her temptations, her fears -- and honest about how the Lord helps her in each of these areas. You'll see yourself in the pages of this book as Nancy shares stories that cause you to laugh, cry, and gasp and say, "And I thought I was the only one!" Nancy helps her readers to remember God's faithfulness throughout every day that He gives us.

My 2 year old son loves this book! I kiss him and hug him as I read it according to the story. I misplaced the original book, but am ordering another here on Amazon.

Young children will enjoy it, as it is not too long or too short and has nice, bright illustrations. I don't even mind reading it a "gazillion" times, as you have to have to do with little ones.

If your child has a difficult time separating from you, then this is the book for you! The Goodbye Game helps children say Goodbye in a positive way. The repetition of playing the goodbye game not only a useful tool to combat separation anxiety but also a math activity. My children have used the goodbye game at day care, pre-school, with babysitters and at bedtime. Fortunately, they don't "need' to play the game anymore, but they still enjoy the story.
