Well, by now you must have read what the book is about, so I'll just write my reaction to it.

I was reluctant at first to read this book, because of the subject matter. I'm not really into historic novels; they tend to be too "educational" and the story gets a little lost in the historic narrative, but this book is a great example of how a historical novel should be like: history is just a background for the story itself, which is great and unfolds smooth and beautifully.

As a middle school teacher, this book is a little gem, since it gives so many topics for discussion. I highly recommend it!

I read this book when I was fifteen, the year it was published, and presented an oral report on it in class. I haven't read it recently but I remember that, at the time, I found it deeply affecting and moving. My favorite book at that time was The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare, and, though I didn't like this one quite as much, I remember identifying strongly with the progaonist in the same way as I did in that book, a strong female protagonist who doesn't have things all figured out yet, but who is just learning who she is.

A beautifully crafted look at the horrors of WWI

Although there are numerous young adult novels that deal with WWII, I've run across few that deal with the horrors of WWI in such intimate detail. Thirteen-year-old Annie's father is a doctor, and she's waiting for him at the train station when she sees wounded soldiers being unloaded from the train: victims of mustard gas, shrapnel wounds, and other war injuries. This reality brings the war home for her in a way that simply reading about it in the papers couldn't.

Soon, Annie begins to spend time with the wounded soldiers at the veteran's hospital where her father works. Anne befriends a soldier wounded in a mustard gas attack and experiences the first stirrings of romance and adult responsibilities. Her initial revulsion at the wounded soldiers' appearances is believable as she has been sheltered from the realities of war by her mother, and her gradual infatuation with Andrew tenderly unfolds.

Overall, this was an inspiring novel that explored heroism, the meaning of sacrifice, and the high cost of war on all involved. I read this numerous times as a teenager, and recently purchased a copy in order to reacquaint myself with Annie's courage and the moving descriptions of patriotism and heroism.

After the Dancing Days
By Margaret I. Rostkowski
Report By Charlotte Beal

Annie is a curious adolesant who is extremely creative and she loves people. She is very smart and feels that she is much for mature than all of her friends. Annie's father is a doctor for veterans that got hurt in World War I. After the war is over Annie's father gets transferred to a hospital near Annie's home. All Annie wants to do is go to the hospital with her father. At the hospital Annie meets Andrew who is a young veteran that was burned in the war. Annie and Andrew start a quest to find out about Annie's uncles death. This book has fantastic writing and a great plot. It also is the perfect length; however, the beginning is a little slow. After the Dancing days is a mystery filled with romance and friendship. This book is a fast read and it is a real page turner. Margaret I. Rostkowski writes with a romantic style. She does a good job of writing the book in Annie's perspective. Anybody could like this book, but it is especially for historical fiction and romance lovers.

My 11 year old daughter and I just finished reading this series of books together. We both laughed our way through each and every one! The stories center around the friendships of 4 middle school students - 2 girls and 2 boys - who are very different from each other. It was realistic in every way from the friendships to the school days to after school activities. You get the humor, tears, fears, ambitions, and so much more from their interactions with each other and their peers. The adults in the books are quite enjoyable, too. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book and the whole series to any preteens. If your pre-teen isn't really into reading, these books just might change their minds.

Report to the Principal's Office is an interesting book. It was a good book, but just good. It is a book about a girl named Sunny Wyler who is trying to get expelled so that she can go to her old school. There is also a girl named Salem Brownmiller who is a writer. She would do anything for a book. Then there is a boy named Eddie Mott who is trying to get through the year smoothly. Then there is Pickles, who doesn't have a goal, but he does have a purpose.
I thought the author rushed through the book. There was no point of the book. The reason I say that is because as I was reading it there were a bunch of little parts that didn't have anything to do with anything. I recommend this book for third and fourth grade boys. It wasn't my style. I like fantasy books. On a star rating I would give it two stars.

Report to the Principal's Office by Jerry Spinelli is a detailed, well-thought out book. The main characters are Sunny Wyler, Salem Brownmiller, Pickles Johnson, Eddie Mott, and Charles T. Brimlow. The story takes place at Plumstead Middle School. The book gives you very detailed character traits and visual traits of characters in your mind. Every character has their own unusual personality. You don't need pictures to see what's going on in this book because of the detailed descriptions of the settings and the characters' actions on every page of the book. It also describes the characters' thoughts, and there are plenty of characters you meet in this story. I would give this book a 5-star rating and recommend it to anyone looking for a detailed book to read.

I have a lot of feelings for this book. Jerry Spinelli is a funny author, but uses some words that shouldn't be in his good books. Report to the Principal's Office is mostly about a sixth grader named Sunny. She is not my type. Sunny is a brat and just wants to be with her friend, but when you go to a new school, you should make new friends and keep the old.
Eddie Mott has a lot of trouble with bullies and liking Sunny. Salem is trouble too. But luckily someone saves him. The ending made a non-sense point. It doesn't seem like it fits the story. Eddie reminds me of Harry potter, but the endings to the books and movies are better.
At first it is hard to figure all the main characters, but I got used to it. Pickles Johnson is not talked about a lot in this book. I dislike the beginning because it starts off in a weird way. I would give this book a seven on a scale of 1 to 10. There are silly moments and bad moments. This book is part of a series. If you like books that have girls who shouldn't be doing certain things, like troublemakers, then you will like Sunny Wyler.
Every book in this series is based on a certain character. This isn't as long as Harry Potter, so it might take you less time to read it. I recommend this book for teachers to read to their class or if you have reading groups. This book is good for ages 8 - 12. If you're younger, have a parent read it to you. Now I'm reading the next book in the series. This book is mostly about Eddie Mott and Pickles Johnson, but it talks about Salem in the beginning. I don't know a lot about it because I am not far into it. What I'm reading so far is good. The book is called Do the Funky Pickle. I guess the only way to find out if the book is good, is if you read it, but be sure to read Report to the Principal's Office first so you understand the rest.

This story is about 4 kids. One girl named Sunny (she's trying to get expelled). Another girl is named Salem (she's trying to write a good story). One boy named Eddie (he's just trying to avoid 8th graders). And another boy named Pickles (he's an inventor). The 4 kids end up going to a school called Plumstead Middle School, where they have many adventures.
When you read Report to the Principal's Office you'll laugh the whole time. Kids ages 8 - 11 will have laugh attacks, I know I did. The book may be a little hard to follow, since there are four leading characters. The beginning started slow, but the middle made up for it. He introduced the characters well, and what their goals are. I recommend this book because it's a good book, it's funny, nice descriptions, and it kind of seems like two of the characters (Eddie and Salem) have a little romance (I wouldn't call it a romance novel though). I would compare this book to... nothing, because it's unique, different, and I doubt you'll read anything like it. 3 out of 5 stars.

Her name was Jessy, she wore lip gloss, and she carried around a cell phone. Abby is sad, because this is not the best friend she knows. This story tells about their friendship. I recommend this book to: 4th and 5th grade girls who have friends or friend problems.

I've read the 14th book, and this book is not as ugly as that one but it's NEARLY the same.
I'm a huge fan of "Abby Hayes" books, I just love the books when Abby, Jessica and Natalie were friends and I'm sorry that Jessica had to leave in the 9th book, but in this book was starting to get ugly.

P.S. When I read the 14th and this book, I wonder where Anne Mazer got this crazy ideas.

This is the book where Jessica came to visit, she had forgotten EVERYTHING! She even changed her name to ' Jessy '. Jessy didn't wear overalls and smiley buttons anymore. She wouldn't play soccer with Abby either, she said it was TOO MESSY.'Jessy was now a girl that carried a cell phone, wore mini skirts, lip gloss, EARRINGS......and had a BOY FRIEND! Someone said Jessy was prettier and cooler than Brianna. But I think that she's CRAZIER. To make matters worse, Abby's friends didn't seem to have time for Abby anymore. How will her friendship survive when her friends were changing?

This is a great book, yet kind of sad.

Abby Hayes' best friend Jessica comes to visit. Well,Jessica has changed alot. (And,please, don't call me crazy, but I like the new Jessica a bit better,I just really like people who are very girly!)And her friends Hannah and Casey are getting closer because of a talent show, although that part has a better ending. So,in all,the story was kind of sad.

Wow! In this book a lot of things do change for Abby. First there is a talent show, where Abby does not want to preticipate, but pairs her two best friends, Casey and Hannah together. Then Abby's former bff, Jessica-now Jessy- comes to Abby's town to visit from her father, stepmother, and stepsister's house. Abby relizes thet Jessy has really changed. Jessy carries a cellphone, has a boyfriend and wears miniskirtrs 24/7. In this novel Abby relizes for the first time that some things do change. I would reccomend this book. It was an enjoyable read.

She still has a crush on Simon, and she has a chose of either staying with the Jazz Tones to still see Simon, or join the school newspaper. She decides to join the paper, and there's so much to think about when one of her things gets stolen to! If you like adventure, this is the perfect book to read.

Abby faces something really bad going with her friends. Most of her classmates are losing their unique and special things. For instance Bethany lost her hamster key chain, Brianna lost her me magazine and cd, etc. Abby finds that its Natalie- one of her best friends' who is stealing the things. Abby and Simon (Abby's friend) solves this problem (kind of a mystery) by telling Natalie what she is doing, So Abby and Simon keep it a secret from the classnmates and Natalie returns all the stuff back.
Abby is an all rounder. She has good thoughts that are almost the same as mine!
This book is interesting and exciting. It has a lot of feelings and I love to read books with feelings.
You should read the series too.

In this book, everybody's losing items, items that are really important to them. Abby decides to try to crack the case, putting together all the suspects and clues. Abby sees something big that tells her who the culprit is. But, should she tell on her friend, or just let others get hurt? Read this book to find out!!

I liked this book because every detail painted a picture in my mind. It also gave me an idea of what college was going to be like.
Claudia is going on her first year of college but she has to leave her boyfriend, Drew, behind. She decides to break up with him and start fresh. While she is there she decided that she wants to join the newspaper. She talks to Gabe, the man of her dreams about getting the job. He tells her she can be on the newspaper. Claudia really likes him, but doesn't have the courage to talk to him. Her room mate, Charlie, tells her to gain her courage by talking to one guy every day for 30 days.
I recommend this book to girls from ages 11-adult because it is a college book and older people would like and understand it better.

Claudia is a college freshman. Having just dumped her boyfriend, she is ready to date and flirt. The only problem is she doesn't know any boys and turns into a nervous wreck around them. She devises a plan to flirt with one boy a day for thirty days. This way she is sure to find Mr. Right.

This novel is great! It is a cute, fun read. I think it is completely relateable. It is tough to get back into the dating scene after having a boyfriend for several years.

The purpose of "target practice" is about teaching yourself to talk to people despite awkwardness. Claudia definitely has some embarassing moments but lives through them. I found humour in the situations that arise.

I also liked the Claudia's character growth. At the beginning, she has very little self esteem. By the end her self esteem is much higher and she has no problem talking to guys.

Basically, this book is about the boys we love and the ones that drive us nuts. It also encourages the reader to go for what they want in life and to never stop believing in true love.

lots of fun

Claudia is a new college freshman, and newly single, having recently broken up with her high-school-long boyfriend. She meets a cute guy within hours of coming to campus, and is horrified to find herself tongue-tied. Her new roommate suggests that she might need flirting practice after being with one guy for so long. Her proposition: meet and talk to one new guy a day for the month of September, just to get practice. Claudia gamely agrees. After all, what could it hurt? At the very least, she'll meet new people and improve her skills. At most? Well, out of thirty guys, who's to say one of them won't be Mr. Right? After all, Claudia knows that Mr. Right never has a girlfriend, so she may as well keep looking. This story goes deeper than it's flirting lessons. It's also about friendship, true love, and making life want you want it to be. The characters are clever and relatable, and it's an overall fun read.

I am an adult who enjoys YA literature, but this book was absolute nonsensical fluff. I became aware of this book when Amazon recommended it to me because I liked The Boyfriend List. I read the book in an hour or so last night, and I got nothing worthwhile from the experience. What stood out to me the most is the fact that the main character's motivation never really made sense. The plot construction hinges on Claudia concluding that her sex appeal must be waning and deciding to practice her flirting skills by striking up a conversation with one new guy every day. So far, so good. The problem is that she comes to this conclusion after only one week of being single, and immediately after some random guy at a party tries to kiss her. Claudia successfully extricates herself from the guy trying to make out with her, is complimented on the way she handled the guy by her Crush, and what she takes from those back-to-back experiences is that she must not be very attractive to guys. That makes no sense whatsoever. Seriously, that's precisely the lack of internal logic and appropriate plot development you can look forward to in this book. Claudia is swarmed with male attention to an unrealistic degree (her ex-boyfriend is trying to get back together with her, band members that she interviews proposition her, the most socially important guy at her first Greek party hits on her, guys at the gym ogle her, a really great guy sees her at a coffee shop once and is so taken with her that he arranges a way to meet cute with her later) and yet she keeps telling us in her narrative that she lacks confidence in her ability to attract men. I was never able to really connect with Claudia and I did not think that her experiences had any ring of truth to them. It's a fast read, but completely forgettable and only slightly enjoyable.

I found this to be a well-written, sweet little story. A bit unbelievable, but I think that's because I just can't fathom letting my dead husband's illegitimate daughter into my life, or being able to let go of the fact that he carried on an affair with another woman for two years...a woman that he seemed to truly love. But, the way Ms. Hinton unfolds this story, one can understand how Jean was able to let go and forgive, and even let Lilly into her life.

This was my first book by Ms. Hinton, but it won't be my last. She has a very simple, yet vivid way of telling a story, and I enjoyed this one very much. If you're looking for a quick little read, I definitely recommend this!

I thought this book was all over the place, but maybe that was because I only read it before I went to bed. There were flashbacks and flash forwards and I thought the author was trying to be overly clever. None of the characters were really that interesting to me. It was sad that Jean didn't really have any friends and to be so old and know practically no one. Wow! I hope I don't end up like that when I am her age. How could a married couple go on for 30 or 40 years and never tell each other such basic things. What a miserable life! I am glad this book was short or I would have put it down sooner.

I am not sure if I would read any of her other books. I do like the fact that it is set in North Carolina, which takes me back home.

I thought this was a boring book with little moral value for me. It is probably because I couldn't relate to the characters because I just don't live my life in total isolation. Others might get more out of it that have life experiences that mirror these characters.

There is a clear message inside. Have to read the whole book to find out though. This is a quick, easy read about a woman who was born to a Indian woman and white blind man. She meets her husband O.T. whom is in a nursing home and eventually passes. While he is in the nursing home, a nurse says that she is glad their daughter gets to come visit.

What you will find out is who is the daughter visiting and where did she come from since they were never able to have children. They had one girl, Emma and she passed as a baby. This book is about the spirit of a person and is enjoyable.

At times, was hard to follow with the flashbacks etc. Enjoyable though!

What a great "little" book with a huge message.

I loved this sparse tale about letting go of that which really doesn't matter and grabbing hold of that which makes all the difference in our lives.

This book reminded me of MRS. DALLOWAY or THE HOURS with it's main character doing so much internalizing. Her "interior" life was rich and full, even if her "outside" life was plain and simple. I read the book in one sitting and was charmed.

I'd like to read more by this author.

Enjoy!

Once in a while a book comes along that just fits perfectly into one's life for that particular moment. The Last Odd Day is certainly that book for me right now. Even the clever title, which notes that the date 11-19-99 is the "last odd day" until the next millennium, leads the reader to be assured that he is in for an amazing journey navigated by a very brilliant mind.

The story tells of Jean, who is half Cherokee half white. She notes the last days spent with her husband O.T. who is slipping through her fingers following a losing battle with a stroke. Jean visits O.T. in the nursing home before he passes away and learns that a mysterious woman has been visiting him as well. Jean finds out about a stunning secret her husband of 57 years has been hiding and while struggling to deal with the details of it, learns a lot about herself. She begins to reevaluate her life and the marriage she was a part of.

Lynne Hinton makes usage of the most vivid imagery allowing the reader to actually see and smell the sights and foods she is describing. From the house where she grew up in the woods to the apple pie with ice cream that she shares with a newfound friend. Through detailed descriptions of the setting in which Jean grew up compared with the life she now leads, the reader is taken on a trip from her childhood home in the Smokies to a beach where she is able to allow herself some personal time. From words of wisdom passed to her by her Grandma Cedar to advice from her nosy neighbor, Maude, Jean discovers new friendships and answers about her life that she has been struggling with her whole life.

The characterization that Hinton brings to the story allows the reader to clearly see into and actual feel the emotional rollercoaster in which Jean is riding. She gives so many detailed descriptions of people that were such a huge part of Jean's life including her family, her friends, and those who were of great importance that she lost along the way.

I would recommend this book for anyone who just wants to relax and enjoy a very special story.

I agree that Stevie was starting to get on your nerves. Yeah, your boyfriend doesn't want to go to your dance, but he had a reason. So why can't you just let it pass instead of it practically breaking you up?
I always thought that the Saddle Club was smart, but the more books a read, the dumber I think they are. A chapter or two and I knew Mrs. Reg and Mr. Stowe liked each other. They gave all of the signs. Come on, I'm their age and I figure out the "mysteries" before they do!! Even Striaght-A Lisa can't seem to figure easy things out.
You can read it I guess, but I don't suggest it.

This is a great book.
In the book, there is this new, annoying guy named Mr. Stowe at the stables and he's always hanging around Mrs. Reg, Max's mother (Max is The Saddle Club's riding instructor).
He rides the wrong way, he calls horses "blondes" and "red-heads" instead of their real color names. And he almost washes the horse's bit with soap. Another dumb thing he does is that when The Saddle Club talks about jumping, meaning, having their horses jump, Mr. Stowe says something about he can't jump himself because he's too old. HA HA! He is really stupid! At the end The Saddle Club finds out that Mrs. Reg and Mr. Stowe like each other!
The Saddle Club also finds out that two ponies who have been misbehaving just have had their stalls changed and now they are not near each other, and they miss each other, so they throw off their riders and do all sorts of bad stuff. Then they bring the ponies back together again and the ponies are so happy and they do such cute stuff!
Also, the stable's Valentine's Day barn dance is coming up and Stevie's boyfriend Phil has his school dance on the same day, same time, and they get into a fight. So then they each go to one another's dance, but they end up with Phil at the barn dance and Stevie at Phil's school dance! Read the book to find out what happens next, but I really love this book!
YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK! EVEN IF YOU DON'T LIKE HORSES, YOU WILL LIKE THIS BOOK!!!!!!!

This was such a good book. When Mrs. Reg gets a boyfriend the Saddle Club accidently tries to separate them; their hilarious antics make for enjoyable reading. Added bonus: the Saddle Club has trouble riding some of the sweetest ponies at the stable! They're not perfect! Yay!

I luved this book! It's really awesome! I know tons of people who go to school and love their boyfriends and are only 12 or 11! And school? I hate school! I think almost all kids do! Besides, Stevie can't help hating school; it's her personality! In my opinion, Bonnie, I liked you adding everything about the boyfriend and girlfriend situation! Sheez, people, lighten up! Anyhow, it's really good! It gave itself away on the back and cover, but the rest of it was great! I was siding with Stevie the whole way, but in the end I probably would've done what she does, too! It's a great read!

This book is a about a girl who's in love with purple, Abby Hayes. The characters are Eva,Isabel,Alex, mom, dad and of course Abby Hayes. Abby is upset because she's leaving her home and purple palace. Abby's siblings are on her side until they see their new home. Abby is in fifth grade. Even though they're moving, she'll stay in the same school. Plus she'll have a purple room. Abby will move but will still have her collages and her calenders. When Abby gets to her new home, she discovers bragging Briana lives in her neighborhood. This book blew me away.

The Ups and Downs of Moving According to Abby Hayes...

This book is well-written, nicely detailed, and,at times, sad. Abby is moving, but not too far away from her old house. But, she can't see her friends as frequently anymore, and fears that they will forget her. She still gets to go to the same school, though.

Abby is absolutely against the idea of moving, and refuses to be happy until the very end. I realize it's sad, but Abby does tend to be a little self-centered about it all, like another reviewer said. But, I really have never been in her position, so I really am not sure how I would act in the situation.

Overall, I think, if you are an Abby fan, you should get this book. Or, like someone else said,if you are moving. This will be some sort of consolation and solace to you if you are as devastated to leave as Abby was.

So, I will finish this review by saying, BUY THE BOOK!

The concept of moving was a good idea-the Hayes family obviously has enough money for a big house-but Abby was JUST SO SELFISH in this book. Eventually, everything will get sorted out, and she'll be able to see her friends more-outside school, which,by the way, stays the same. Out of sight ,out of mind? Come on, she won't be out of sight. Who cares about Brianna? The only thing I like about this book is that Simon doesn't show up...but really, I think Ann Mazer is running out of ideas-and obviously she doesn't remember what it's like to be a kid.

...who on earth moves into some fairy-tale mansion after living in a small, cramped, house with one bathroom? Abby Hayes, that's who. However, this book -- which is supposed to be realistic -- just makes me groan with exasperation every time I pick it up. Listen, people; do YOU live in a house as large as Abby's? Not only that, but she's UPSET about the move, for goodness sake. Brianna is a small trifle compared to what Abby is gaining. And when her house gets more organized, she will be able to see her friends more often. (AND she sees them at school each day.) At least in this book she's not obsessing about poor Simon. Most girls do not get their first crush at eleven! Fourteen or fifteen is more like it. Simon gets only a couple mentions in That's the Way the Cookie Crumbles -- and I am very relieved by it. I hope that Anne Mazer can regain her talent for writing realistic, sensible books and just throw the Simon thing -- along with Abby's strange new house -- away.

This book came out a couple weeks before I moved to a new house. The details that follow moving are very accurate. Some things though, like the new buyers wanting to wait six weeks before purchasing Abby's new house is a bit out there, though. But the use of the new house's terms (such as cherry cabinetry and stainless steel appliances) are excellent. They're not something every kid would think of when moving into a new house. The only thing I disliked about this book was the amount of time Abby spent complaining about moving and about her new house. I thought she was moving into a nice little house. The only thing that made the new house sound odd was the fact that Anne Mazer put waaaaay too many sky lights in it. (Trust me, I've had sky lights before and they're really annoying.) So if you're moving any time soon, you'll love this book and it would most likely be something you could relate to. And if you're an Abby fan and moving, this is an excellent read. It also seems like Anne is getting her old writing style back (you know, the pre-Simon days). Great job!

Now, what I was expecting was a totally cool, enchanting book but what I received was a little, no huge dissapointment. Only simple words are used and loads of pictures. Even I could have written a better book than that. I like the necklace though, but the chain is a little weird. Thsi is not a sucessful book M.J. Carr.

Finally! The BSC movie's here! Everyone has been waiting eagerly for it! Kristy's dad's surprise visit, the BSC summer camp, the greenhouse, etc. It's really a total fun! But, Kristy has to keep giving excuses to see her dad. Can she lie on forever to her friends and her family? Watch them as they perform in this lively and touching movie

It ruled!! No other words for it...well, maybe a few. =)

ISBN 0590436457 - Although I like the ties between the BSC series and the Little Sister series, I'm finding that the BSLS books are better the less they mention Kristy. I don't know why that is, but it seems to be the pattern lately. Karen's in Love is fun and funny, in part because these little kids seem to live in a world entirely of their own making.

Karen has been engaged to Ricky for a little while and Valentine's Day is coming. The class is having a party and everything would be fine except for one thing: Pamela. Karen is sure, after Ricky is actually nice to Pamela at her birthday party, that he likes her more. What that means for Karen's wedding plans, she doesn't know. She's not even sure what it means for Valentine's Day! Will they make up? Will Ricky end up marrying Pamela?

I myself, once a kindergarten bride, don't remember being quite as organized or motivated as Karen, which is why I look at her with awe and amusement. She's a very real-seeming character and so are her friends. Except for their ability to throw together a wedding in 48 hours, which is beyond real and into wonder-kids! Martin's ability to write for them and switch gears to write for her older series never ceases to astound me. RL 3, ages 7-9

I love reading about everything with the way it was descriptively written. From pamela harding's birthday to the valentine's day breakfast at the little & activities at school to the wedding and planning, although it is kind of silly having a pretend wedding in second grade, I don't think that would fly today! Still a cute book though.

well written!

I love this book! karen is too young to fall in love, but it's cute and sweet and the way the author has written it descriptively is so good, especially the parts where she's celebrating valentine's day and at pamela's birthday party! It really gets you in the mood to celebrate

I hate this book because Karen is much to young for love! I also think Ricky is to good for Karen. Ricky is funny, sweet and charming, while Karen thinks she is perfect and bullies her freinds. Speaking of Karens friends, I also think Hannah and Nancy are much to good for Karen, because they are both so nice and all and Karen is a little Devil.

i love reading about karen! even if i'm too old...
