Unfortunately for the religious right, that was the day of Jefferson's second inauguration.

Nothing in the records supports the existence of the prayer for peace. On top of that, the prayer for peace is not in any way representative of jefferson's views on any deity.

Gingrich cites a 1944 book for the quote. I checked the book (like he did not) and the pages are letters to Martha Jefferson and a Colonel Dunsmore; nothing about any prayer.

He further says its in the "Compilation of the messages and papers of the Presidents" but its not. I have read the entire jefferson section. One can go to Guttenberg and read the entire book. It looks as if Mr Gingrich's religious fanaticism got in the way of scholarchip.16003461975232007-02-27Founding Fathers speak out.Reviewed by Richard R. Blake for Reader Views (02/07)

"In Their Own Words" is a wake up call for American Citizens to return to patriotism. Bob Gingrich skillfully exposes how history revisionist have duped unsuspecting citizens, unfamiliar with early American history, into thinking that the founding fathers of our country were something other than dedicated men that founded a government to be guided into the future by the precepts of the Judeo-Christian Bible.

This is a bold plea for parents and grandparents to counter the efforts of these history revisionists. The book is comprised of a collection of essays drawn from the lives of 18 prominent Founding Fathers using direct quotations from their published works. These chosen excerpts clearly illustrate their personal thinking on God, the Bible, government, the nature of man, and the importance of the inclusion of Christian principles in government.

A quote from John F. Kennedy sums up Gingrich's premise: "For more that three centuries, moral values have been the life-support system of this country. The men and women who planted their stand on these shores in the year 1607 vowed to build here a nation founded on virtue and moral integrity."

Gingrich shows how these Founding Fathers were men of virtue, men of character, living moral lives, strong in their Christian faith. Patrick Henry's word attests to this when he said: "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians: not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ."

Regarding the "separation of church and state", I found an observation from a quote by Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist of particular interest. "The framers intended the Establishment Clause to prohibit the designation of any church as a `national' one...There is simply no historical foundation for the proposition that the framers intended to build a wall of separation (between church and state) ...The recent court decisions are in no way based on either the language or intent of the framers."

The book is well researched and thoroughly documented. Gingrich has provided the reader with a list of important works for further reading in addition to the references provided in the end notes listed for each chapter.

"In Their Own Words" is a must read for every Christian educator. This is a book that should be on the required reading list of every American History teacher and professor at both secondary and college level, and in every American public library. It should be read, studied, and recommended for inclusion in history and social studies curriculum and be read by every parent of school age children. Gingrich's writing is hard hitting, important, and timely.A captivating, easy-to-read primer featuring selected Founding Fathers and early American history written in a journalistic rather than professorial style. Tenets of the culture way are presented in understandable terms.465264General4869Colonial Period4853United States4808Americas9History1000Subjects283155Books10114General10108Essays17Literature & Fiction1000Subjects283155Books713390011General AAS10108Essays17Literature & Fiction1000Subjects283155Books12354General12350Church History12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books713630011General AAS12350Church History12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12504General22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books713609011General AAS22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksB00087KAM8http://www.amazon.com/Born-sea-founding-Universalist-Provincetown/dp/B00087KAM8%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB00087KAM8Jane Lippitt PattersonUnknown BindingEnglishEnglishJ.H. Jane Lippitt Patterson, Born of the Sea: The Story of the Founding of the Universalist Church of Provincetown (J. H. West Co., 1913)

I have no idea how close Jane Lippitt Patterson's epic (using the term in the scope of its subject, rather than the length of the piece) 1913 poem mirrors the reality of the founding of the Universalist Church of Provincetown. If it's dead accurate, then this is one heck of a story. If it's not, well, it's still one heck of a story. As with most minor poetry at the tail end of the Victorian era, however, it's not told very well. Patterson was, perhaps, overly fond of the thudding, four-on-the-floor rhythm and moon-June rhyme schemes that are two of the main ingredients of mediocre-at-best formal poetry. Still, if the content is more important than the form for you, this is an interesting little bit of (possibly enlarged) history that's worth looking into. ** ½1000Subjects1Arts & Photography2Biographies & Memoirs3Business & Investing4Children's Books4366Comics & Graphic Novels5Computers & Internet6Cooking, Food & Wine86Entertainment301889Gay & Lesbian10Health, Mind & Body9History48Home & Garden10777Law17Literature & Fiction13996Medicine18Mystery & Thrillers53Nonfiction290060Outdoors & Nature20Parenting & Families173507Professional & Technical21Reference22Religion & Spirituality23Romance75Science25Science Fiction & Fantasy26Sports28Teens27Travel283155Books1595550844http://www.amazon.com/Ten-Tortured-Words-Founding-Religion/dp/1595550844%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D1595550844107507http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/519IonhQ4cL._SL75_.jpg7554http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/519IonhQ4cL._SL160_.jpg160115http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/519IonhQ4cL.jpg500360Stephen MansfieldHardcover342.73085297815955508421001595550844EnglishEnglishEnglish9302599USD$25.99Thomas Nelson1272Book2007-06-12Thomas NelsonThomas NelsonTen Tortured Words: How the Founding Fathers Tried to Protect Religion in America . . . and What's Happened Since110620439USD$4.39435USD$4.3535130011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DERNewnew15l3bzPtGCcu80JgnYAbDX88zAdyH3rCSeV2Lvd9BrCsb%2BBJCp4cNwJX0102f5ci8vxeupRItwscXKPdP0I0vA%3D%3D1715USD$17.15Usually ships in 24 hours2.029615955508441112008-04-26What more can be said? Many people more knowledgeable in American History than I have already said about all there is to say on the historical errors in this book. What a shame - I had high hopes for this book. 15955508441112008-03-09Unintented Revisionism or Plain Bad ScholarshipI'm normally a science and math teacher. One book I normally assign to my AP students (Calculus, Chemistry and Physics) discusses the misuse of statistics. If I were teaching the AP U.S. History class, I would use this book as an example of poor historical scholarship. As it stands there is so much bad science out there that I have my students find and criticize it themselves. Bad history which creates misperceptions about our country is in another category. Science inherently acknowledges that it is a work-in-progress (except for evolution which is treated as iron-clad truth--don't get me started!). On the other hand, history books containing bona fide errors gravely disservice everyone.

Buy this book only if you want to see what I mean by bad history!15955508445111612008-01-22Sabotage Agenda By Leftists After searching for the book "Ten Tortured Words" on the net back in August of last year, I found there was a concerted effort by a well known Leftist blog called Daily Kos, that encouraged their readers to go on Amazon and trash the book. No matter if the reviewers had read the book or not. Google "Ten Tortured Words," you'll see the Daily Kos page encouraging the deception. The object was to have large numbers say they reviewed the book, and by lying they had read the book, to deceive those of us that went on Amazon to find honest reviews of the books offered there. I've found that the Leftists are doing the same thing to another book on Amazon called "Liberal Fascists" by encouraging it's readers to post bogus negative reviews as well. I wanted to warn buyers on Amazon back in August of the deception, and orchestrated effort of these Leftists websites to deceive them by posting negative bogus reviews to sway the rating system and by doing that to discourage Amazon buyers from purchasing the book. But I waited, thinking that Amazon or someone surely would notify the buying public on Amazon of this despicable and deceitful effort by Daily Kos Leftists, as well as other Leftist websites to deliberately deceive the buyers on Amazon who wish only to read honest, truthful reviews without some sort of orchestrated agenda of deception.

Any book should stand on it's on without being the subject of any groups efforts at tying to suppress the readership of a book by using orchestrated, bogus and deceitful tactics to corrupt the rating system. Using honest reviews is one thing, but encouraging reviews by those who have not read the book is another. The 17 negative reviews on Amazon were put there within a few days of Daily Kos initiating the deceptive assualt on the ratings system for "Ten Tortured Words."

I know, because I watched it happen day by day, as I tried to find unbiased reviews of the book on Amazon. It seems to me the Left would like to suppress, or prohibit those books they do not agree with if it were possible for them to do so. Orchestrated, deceptive efforts to sway the rating system on Amazon is not the ethical way to refute what they perceive as errors in the book. 1595550844214392008-01-18Lamenting the "good old days"This book does no more than wish that we were back in the '50s again.

The author has done an adequate job of research into the topic of various court cases that he brings up as important to religious beliefs in this country. What he shows is that over the last 50 years, American society has become significantly more liberal. He blames that liberalism on the court system, and on lawmakers who accept court rulings without trying to override them by passing new bills in Congress.

At the end of the book, I was expecting some sort of call to action to urge our Congressmen to pass new legislation that would perhaps restore some of the '50s ideals. Instead, he does mention that some pieces of legislation have been introduced, some more than once, but with no obvious chance of success. The ending was a surprise in its lack of an action plan and its level of depression.

If you like to sit around with your friends and discuss the days when your kids could walk home from school without fear, when you could leave your house unlocked most of the day, and when practically everyone in your neighborhood went to church on Sunday morning, this is the book for you.1595550844571122007-10-13EXCELLENT BOOKI can see why some of the review writers are trying to discourage people from buying this book. If you are someone trying to get rid of the Christian heritage this nation has then this is not a book you want people reading. Mansfield has done an excellent job of telling the truth about our founding fathers and what they truly wanted for our country. If you want to know the truth, buy this book. It is very informative.
Based on an intriguing examination of the First Amendment, Ten Tortured Words embodies centuries of diverse American legal ideas on the role of religion in our society. The First Amendment to the Constitution is one of the most fascinating, misunderstood, controversial, and defining sentences in American history. It has also undergone more transformation as a principle of law than any other intention of the Founding Fathers of this country. As important as this single Constitutional sentence is, few Americans know what it says, much less what it means and when it came into being. Ten Tortured Words combines extensive historical and legal research with interviews of contemporary thinkers and American voices, yet is practical in its examination of religion in society.1581821182More Than Dates & Dead People: Recovering a Christian View of History1596985054The Politically Incorrect Guide(tm) to the Constitution (Politically Incorrect Guides)0060936428The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression1596985178What's So Great About Christianity140410416XAmerican Heroes: Stories of Faith, Courage, and Sacrifice from the Front Lines713014011General AAS319654011Qualifying Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books4870General4853United States4808Americas9History1000Subjects283155Books713299011General AAS4853United States4808Americas9History1000Subjects283155Books10817General227137Constitutional Law10777Law1000Subjects283155Books713353011General AAS227137Constitutional Law10777Law1000Subjects283155Books10759Constitutions10753Government53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books227464General227461Constitutional Law173518Law173507Professional & Technical1000Subjects283155Books713565011General AAS227461Constitutional Law173518Law173507Professional & Technical1000Subjects283155Books12781Church & State12779Religious Studies22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksRCATYI6NLE92BMust Reads for American Christians & AthiestsR1VI6VWHHHZN89Olasky's Books to Read on the Treadmill34NAENZQH0CSRConstitutional History, States' Rights and FederalismB0006QI0IMhttp://www.amazon.com/anniversary-founding-Evangelical-Lutheran-Marietta/dp/B0006QI0IM%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0006QI0IMRichard A KrauseUnknown BindingEnglishEnglishCrown of Life Evangelical Lutheran ChurchBook1993Crown of Life Evangelical Lutheran ChurchCrown of Life Evangelical Lutheran ChurchThe 10th anniversary of the founding of Crown of Life Evangelical Lutheran Church, Marietta, Ohio00000014279221Ohio14278871State & Local4853United States4808Americas9History1000Subjects283155Books12420General12404Protestantism12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books713640011General AAS12404Protestantism12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155BooksB0006DZYRAhttp://www.amazon.com/150-years-faith-Claremont-Hampshire/dp/B0006DZYRA%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0006DZYRAHector O LaMontagneUnknown BindingEnglishs.n.]41Book1973s.n.]s.n.]150 years of faith: The life of Rev.
