I'm delighted to see this title available again, even if only as a used book. It is simply a great little book. Gordon is a poet who knows some Chinese, unlike most "translators" of Chinese, including even some of the famous (and best) ones. If only there were a marketing combine to catch the magic of books like this and keep it (them) in print. Good anthologies flash and are gone, the mediocre (I guess because they don't sell at ALL)seem to hang on. Gordon has two other books of Chinese translations: look for them by his name.

Insightful, upclose look at Indonesia's controversial President
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-13
Barton does his research and tags along with Wahid - more popularly referred to as Gus Dur - for years prior to his becoming president. So, upon election, he continues along for the ride, chronicling the ups and downs, the gaffes and misunderstandings, the grace the gentle demeanor of one of Indonesia's most controversial presidents. (The sadness of Gus Dur's leaving office is palpable in this account.) Read it to understand the man, but also read it to understand the origins of the current political system in Indonesia and how is meshes with the main religious organisations there. Whatever your aim, read it.

Excellent introduction for non-scientists

This is an excellent book for non-scientists. I am not attempting to belittle archaeologists, but most haven't taken the math to understand geophysics at a fundamental level. They are most interested in applying geophysics as a tool to assist in their work for which this book will be an asset. I have also read the books by Gaffney and Clark which are good introductions. This book actually has some math in it, which is a good thing. The book grew out of the geophysics for non science majors that Witten taught at the University of Oklahoma which was a quite popular course. I recommend it for any archaeologist or non-scientist who is interested in geophysics.

The best book on the subject yet written--mandatory reading
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1997-05-06
David Pirie argues that the Gothic horror tale is Great Britain's most unique contribution to literature and that the British horror films produced after World War II, chiefly by the legendary "Studio That Dripped Blood," Hammer Films Ltd., represent the greatest flowering of creativity in the history of British cinema. A well written, profusely illustrated and thoughtful book, "A Heritage of Horror" includes an excellent filmography. Although out of date and deserving of revision, the book remains mandatory reading for both scholarly and lay students of the horror genr

when Jean Claude Mezieres' and Pierre Christin's comic "Valerian"
was published in France for the first time it was different fromn other comics in the same genre. It featured a strong, female character, Laureline and some great designed aliens, to me "Valerian" is the best sci fi comic and if you have good taste you'll think that too.

Entertaining and Illuminating

It's rare to come across a book that truly is valuable for novice and expert alike, that informs about serious matters while entertaining the reader, and that can be read quickly and yet is a "keeper" for one's library. In Jakarta Inside Out, Daniel Ziv has written one of the best insider's guides to the dirty, messy, smelly, and yet fascinating Indonesian capital. In a series of one and two page essays on various categories peculiar to Jakarta, Ziv gives the reader new to things Indonesian a great introduction to the capital and country, and yet the long-time expert will also find much of value--not the least of which is Ziv's style. His text is a hoot, and the photographs he has chosen capture all the wackiness of Jakarta. Let's hope Ziv changes jobs frequently, allowing him similar sojourns in various Asian capitals and opportunities to produce more essential guides like Jakarta Inside Out.

A Trip!

This book is an incredible journey in picture and word thru Indonesian history, a wonderful "coffeetable" book, but also a fascinating perspective on third world, subsistance economy, growth and the lack thereof. The nostalgia of the early travels and trade route thru the Spice Islands wafts from every page and picture like sweet incense. There is nothing more satisfying, however politically incorrect, than a tasty Kretek coupled with sweet, black tea and heavy cream! The faces of these beautiful people, aged, yet energetic, with a determinism unseen outside of Kansas, their portraits alone are worth the price!

Language and Power: Exploring Political Cultures in Indonesia

A Must Read Book To Begin Understanding Indonesian Politics
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-31
Within his collection of essays in this book, Anderson explores the underlying cultures of Indonesian politics. He ties back the political atmosphere of Indonesia to the social values of the most dominant culture in Indonesia, the Javanese culture. These essays were written prior to 1984 (mostly in the late 60's), but their contents relate well even to the present political scenes of Indonesia.

As an American citizen with Indonesian ancestry, I find that this book would help anyone who is interested in learning the complexity of Indonesia's sociopolitical arena. A lot of misunderstandings about Indonesia's politics can be cleared by reading this book. This book does not talk about the current political scenes, rather it explains the origins of political values that are dominant in Indonesia even today.

Changed my view of Grammar

OK, I am a bit biased. Craig Hancock was my professor last semester at SUNY Albany, so I receieved instruction perfectly tailored to the book. However, even with a lesser instructor, I feel this book would have done it's job. It's tone is conversational and it's pace is very managable. Breaks down barriers, defeats fears- believe me!
