Too often, books on 'christian worship music' are filled with un-substantiated (often romantic) rhetoric which fails to give any answers in the nexus of traditional and contemporary music tradition . It is so refreshing to see that Evans has approached the elephant in the corner of the room from an objective musicological and theological perspective. Clearly grounded in significant amounts of research, Evans takes a critical look at congregational songs used in the church from a neutral perspective. A MUST have for pastors and musicians.

Definitive book for worship leaders and those who think on worship

Open Up The Doors is a detailed and well researched documentation of what is happening to the contemporary church worship scene. So much of the stuff you will read about this subject is pushing a particular view - ie Hymns=Good: Hillsong=Bad or vice versa. Evans has adopted a much more considered position and what he has to say needs to be read by every side in the worship wars. It is well written, intelligent, considered and offers hope for a kind of cease fire in the traditional versus contemporary music debate. For those of you who are students of music, students of worship, or students of the arts in the church this book is a must have item on your bookshelf.

The first tarot guide to provide actual transcriptions of readings recorded by the author

The Original Tarot and You (first printed in 1971) was the first tarot guide to provide actual transcriptions of readings recorded by the author. By applying the use of these transcriptions, Richard Roberts delightfully shows just how to read tarot cards using an interactive method which allows the cards to be accessed directly with a type of free association. With the use of seven different spreads, Roberts gives an enlightening look into what can happen during a tarot consultation and opens the door of ancient theoretics and historical rediscoveries The Original Tarot and You is especially recommended to students of Metaphysical Studies in general, and the Tarot in particular.

A great great Tarot card book!!!

I first read this book as a beginner back in the 70s, and it did not make a lot of sense, but it was very interesting. Since then I have read it a few more times, and it's just fantastic! The only type of books it can compare to are psychoanalysis case-study books. Because that's all it is, case-by-case Tarot card readings that Mr. Roberts does for clients, and then a BIG one for his friend Joseph Campbell!! If you have ever read any of Mr. Campbell's mythology, hero books, you will like this too. The Aquarian Tarot deck is used throughout for card-placement illustration. There are NO definitions of cards, very little history. This is not your normal Tarot book at all. And that's a good thing!

Great Stress Reliever

Anne Beattie has a very calming voice. Immediately upon hearing the beginning of the cassette, you can begin to relax. Her visualizations are very realistic. Her tape is not repetitive or boring. It is the kind of tape that you would pick up daily to listen to. I listen to this tape while having chemo and it relaxes me. Being relaxed boosts your immune system and lets the medicine do its job. I recommend the tape highly.

Self-Help for Cancer Patients

This is an audio tape. One side is relaxation and general stress reduction; the other is a guided visualization stressing health and empowerment. As a cancer patient and survivor I have used this tape during treatment and continue to use it in recovery. It is a professionally done piece that provides support, comfort and help. Anne's voice is pleasant and the music and message are well done and appropriate. I have given it to friends and suggest it for any cancer patients wishing to maintain a positive attitude and to reaffirm their sense of health and well-being.

This book was printed in the mid-1980s as a primer on military strategy for students of the pending Cold War. Anyone who owns this has, inadvertently, purchased themselves a wonderful piece of history, especially if you still have the maps on the dust-jacket featuring the two sides' encroachment on each other. There are sections on nuclear technolgogy, wars of "liberation," the arms market, European deployment, biochemical warfare, air and naval power at a time when the B-2 was only just deployed and stealth technology was just a twinkle in Caspar Weinberger's eye. While the strategic studies institutes have moved on, Cold War histories are burgeoning, and it will not be long before a book like this gets issued (or re-issued) so that readers will be able to understand what the battle of the superpowers meant (and how lucky we are that it is no longer underway).

Suspense and Mystery written in Beautiful Prose
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-22
This novel is a beautifully written account of two southern families in decay, trying to hold on to a past that isn't there.

What is really amazing is that such suspense and strangeness can be written in what is almost poetry at times. Beautifully written descriptions of decaying Gothic plantations form pleasing oxymorons.

Two reviews I read state that 'Alice Addison' is a pseudonym for Mack Mangham who wrote the extremely compelling "Shadow of the Hawk." It is easy to see his flowing style in the prose of both novels.

This book deserves your attention. Once into it, you will be compelled to rush to the strange and horrifying ending which still manages to remain uplifting.

Think of the decaying south. Update it to the present day. Look at it all with a sense of humor, and you have a delightful, suspense gothic novel which manages to make fun of itself as it drives us on to the wild conclusion. In the end, the only one I felt sorry for was the snake, but I couldn't put it down.

Easily the best book ever written on Indonesia's experiment with liberal democracy in the 1950s. Required reading to understand Indonesia's current struggle to re-establish a democratic system of government after 35 years of authoritarianism under Soekarno and Soeharto. The recent focus on militant Islam after the Bali bombings of October 2002 is put in a valuable historical perspective. The publishers would perform a valuable service by reissuing this outstanding work of scholarship.

objective research with a personal touch
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-04
Anggraeni takes an objective reporting style approach to her book, focusing not just on the negative situations but also on some of the positive experiences by Indonesian workers and their employers abroad. Research is limited to worker situations, agencies, gvt & labour laws in Hong Kong, Singapore & Malaysia, but this micro-study is successful in exposing the complexity of the situation as well as to raise awareness about the risks involved for domestic workers who are recruited and shipped off. It's a great critique of the problem that is not unique to these countries, asking why labour laws do not include domestic workers in so many countries (including Indonesia). Personal testimonies are given by workers who demonstrate the sometimes heartbreaking situations faced by Indonesian women risking everything to find work abroad. Testimonies include stories of verbal, physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse; forced confinement at the workplace; violation of contracts; withheld payments & passports, and more. It's a solid book with good details & research: I give it 4 stars out of 5.

Lovely edition of Vol. III, No. 1
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-04
Pay no attention to the inaccurate page count listed above. This is the Mandrake and Holmes limited edition I purchased several years ago directly from the publisher, I believe, and only 25 of this edition were made. Although not noted, it ought to be hand-numbered, like ##/25 followed by the publisher's hand-written initials. Perhaps the seller failed to recognize this.

This is the so-called facsimile edition, in that it contains every page of the original Equinox Vol. III No. 1, as published in Chicago, 1919. It is not the same size as that original edition, nor does its cover or spine look anything like the 1st edition, but this edition alone contains all of the ads in the backpages omitted from every Weiser reprint edition ever produced. Well-made, sure to be a collector's edition, but contains no articles, tables, or annotations not already found in any of the Weiser Vol. III No. 1 editions already in print.
