Enter the Mind of a Prophet

This book gives a good brief account of Crowley's life story up to and including his reception of The Book of the Law. It covers all the events of Crowley's life that Crowley felt were of most importance. For a fuller account of his life the reader might want to read Crowley's Confessions, or Perdurabo: The Life of Aleister Crowley by Richard Kaczynski. For those looking for a review of Crowley's life not done by a person that actually enjoys the works of Crowley they could check out Do What Thou Wilt by Sutin which almost oozes with hate for Crowley and belittles almost every major thing Crowley did during his life.

In my opinion the reason this book (Equinox of the Gods) is so wonderful is that it takes us inside the mind of the prophet WHILE he was receiving The Book of the Law. Crowley's line by line account of receiving The Book of the Law and what was going on inside his head while it happens is priceless. He takes us through the things he saw in his mind. The questions that where raised (and answered in The Book of the Law). This book is a must read for all Thelemites, O.T.O. members, and A.'.A.'. members trying to understand The Book of the Law. Lines in The Book of the Law that could be puzzled over for years are explained in seconds when you understand the thoughts inside the mind of the prophet while he was receiving the book. Some things in The Book of the Law are comments about thoughts inside his head. Some things were mere personal instructions for Crowley. Other things were direct answers to questions and doubts he was having during the reception of The Book of the Law. Knowing which passage is which is a joyous help when trying to understand all the aspects of this holy book.

Equinox of the Gods also includes the full text of all three chapters of Liber AL vel Legis (Book 220 also called The Book of the Law).

"Equinox of the Gods" is, simply put, a wonder. A marvel that any Thelemite worth his/her salt should read and that any Occultist in general would find much of interest within. This book has within it's pages a complete copy of Liber vel Legis (The Book of the Law) as well as a facsimile of the handwritten MS. The commentaries on Liber vel Legis alone are worth the cost of admission, not to mention the value of the bits of Crowley's personal journals. Highly recommended!

In The Equinox of the Gods, Aleister Crowley offers an overview of the circumstances surrounding his reception of the threefold Book of Law in April of 1904. Includes a copy of the Book of the Law, Liber AL vel Legis, as well as a facsimile of the holotype manuscript L. Also included are excerpts from his diaries, color plates of the Stele of Revealing, and much enlightening commentary upon this most important Holy Book of Thelema. Highly recommended to anyone even remotely interested in Aleister Crowley's Magick of Thelema.

Starhawk Speaks

Review Date: 2006-08-18
Here is a new format for our readers that provides quality material at a reasonable price for those who prefer a format other than written word.

Sounds True has a wonderful package here. A 4 CD set that contains Starhawk's book "Earth Magic". The book is actually spoken by Starhawk and is nicely boxed and presented.

First, the quality of the CDs themselves. We have nice overall audio quality. Starhawk comes across clear, with her rich vocal tones. If you have ever heard her speak publicly, as I have, you will appreciate the quality here. She has the same clarity and sound. Nothing is augmented or strained. And she does not drone, or annoy vocally. So it is a pleasant overall listening experience.

There are some background sounds. Drums and flutes denote the beginning and end of each disk. They are small in proportion to the rest of the disk, but a nice touch.

I listened to much of this material in my car. To be honest, it can be distracting in the car, as you are listening to some lessons and exercises in magical practice and your mind can tend to wander from your first focus of driving. I ended up listening to some of this material over again in the comfort of my work area, and I found I could focus better on the material better. So, a recommendation: don't listen to all of this in your car.

But I do see the value of having this on disk. Not just because it offers Starhawks material on disk for those who might be visually impaired. That is the most obvious benefit of having an Audiobook.

But we are also looking at meditations, which Starhawk leads you through. This format allows you to follow her guided meditation, and you can pause the disk, or give some thought to the material offered by Starhawk and then move on when you are ready.

The material presented here is Starhawk's own material. This is her tradition, her way of working, and much of it is based on the teachings of the Reclaiming Tradition.

So, the history presented on Disk One is taken from the Goddess movement aspect. On this disk she covers the history of the Goddess religions dating back to the dawn of Goddess worship. She leads us through the changes in religious practices as seen by the Goddess movement, and then bringing us back to Goddess worship today.

Disk Two looks at today's practices of Goddess worship and magic. She spends a lot of time examining magical practices through the Goddess as part of the Reclaiming Tradition. She discusses her beliefs in ethics, male and female energies, spirit and nature and the elements. She also examines life celebrations, festivals and cycles of change.

Disk Three moves into actual practices. If you have ever seen her speak publicly you know her method of incorporating a small ritual into her teachings. She does this again on this disk, discussing the Reclaiming Traditions way of working Ritual - incorporating the elements and what they mean. Very nicely done, and it provides some material to contemplate as well.

The final disk examines Goddess in your workings, intent and how it affects your practice, as well as grounding and centering and a final summary.

There is a lovely 21 minute drum meditation on Water. A very nice presentation, and one which I think you will find interesting. She even sings a little! It is a healing meditation, so it will encourage you to look deep within yourself.

The last track sums up very nicely what the purpose of this recording is all about. Starhawk discusses healing, from ourselves to the earth. Healing - and magic, being very earth-centered. This is Starhawk's message these days, and she gets this across well in the final track.

If you are a Starhawk fan, this is a great offering. It is not read, it is spoken from her heart. It gives us a really good look at the Reclaiming Tradition and its associated teachings, practices and philosophy.

If your focus is Goddess spirituality, you will find this an excellent addition to your library and your practice. Anyone who follows the Reclaiming Tradition will want to add this as well. And for those of us who respect Starhawk and her years of working in the pagan community, this audiobook gives us a glimpse of the woman and her message. boudica

If I hade any criticism, it would be there was a little too much emphasis on history, with room for more suggestions for today - expand the sacred rituals.

Well-known Wiccan and Pagan author Starhawk teaches rituals for connecting to and channeling the elemental forces of nature. Starhawk describes specific rites for drawing on the power of air, fire, earth, and water; celebrating sacred holidays such as the Solstice and the Equinox; and for giving gifts to the universe that return to us a hundred-fold. She is author of ten books, including The Spiral Dance and Webs of Power. More reviews at AudioColumn.com

A Solid book about the Great War
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 15 total.

Few books really have as much as this book has. You can read this book and you will know mostly everything about the Great War. There are chapters not just about war on the fronts but also about the civilians, the spies and the U-bouts.

This book does not take sides and in one of the chapters about the Soldiers of the war, it really makes you think. One of the great quotes from this book is: "Some should question not why these men fought but why they stayed" The book talks about the Generals and there foolish plans, the battles and the many, many lost lives.

If you go back even further this war was a continuation of the Fraco-Prussian war and why after the Allies won, Germany paid such a high price. It was to be such a mistake that because of that, people from the Right were able to take control of the country, the Nazis. This book deals with that as well and it's not a dry telling of the war but it has many details. It's not an easy read but if you apply yourself and are interested it you will come out knowing more, almost everything about the Great War.

excellent one volume overview of the war

In terms of human suffering, sheer scale and expense and vastness of effort, and political and social implications, World War I dwarfed every other military event before it. Inasmuch as it led directly to the Russian revolution and the Soviet Union, and that the handling of the aftermath made all but inevitable the eventual rise of a regime such as that in Nazi Germany which then made inevitable a sort of phase 2 to the conflict in the form of World War II, the first war must be seen as the most important political/military happening since at the very least the 30 Years War. Nothing important, and almost nothing at all, was the same after the war had run its course as it had been before it was begun.

A bit of a shame then, one might think, that basically nothing about it is taught in schools any more.

Winter's book is an excellent single volume treatment of the entire conflict. It is divided in two ways. The first is to break the war down as it pertained first to the politicians in charge, then the generals running the war, then the soldiers and finally the civilians affected. Within those general parameters, it is further broken down by year and the general trends of the war. Finally, there are chapters covering the immediate aftermath of the war in the countries of the victors as well as those vanquished; the political and grand strategic implications on all. There is also a chapter on the literature, the arts, and films covering or touching on the experience of the war.

The text throughout is balanced, concise and well written. Where there is controversy, for example over the ultimate war guilt of the various parties, multiple sides of the argument are all fairly presented for the reader to reflect on. Supplementing the general text are dozens of sidebars giving us a few paragraphs each on biographies of many of the more colorful or important personalities on each side; the weapon systems and how they changed the conflict; statistics on everything from relative casualties to how many wagonloads of equipment and food or ammunition a corps in the field might need. There is nothing of importance regarding life on the front or at home that is not at least touched on.

Graphically the volume is gorgeous, with excellent photos on every page, maps and graphs in abundance, charts illustrating a wide variety of subjects, indeces and notes in plenty. It is a superb production in every way.

There are many, many books covering in detail each and every important individual subject presented in this book. Most are worth reading if you have the time and interest. However, for a single book addressing at least some information on each aspect of the war, and presented in such a clear and well done way, in under 300 pages, this is the book to buy.

I very much enjoy reading all types of history, but, for some reason had neglected WWI. I knew the basics of the Ferdinand assasination and that it escalated rapidly. US comes in at the end, Russia disinigrates into civil war and Germany's mistreatment at Versailles that leads to WWII. That's the cliff notes version.

This book did an excellent job of breaking it down into several sections that helped you understand the many facets of the war. From the generals to the soldiers, to the weapons to the civilians, he does an excellent job of clarifying a very muddy picture. Speaking of pictures, the photos in the book were phenomenal and the accompanying charts and data facts were easy to follow and understand. An overall excellent primer for anyone wanting to get a more detailed understanding of WWI.

Set during one of the most important geopolitical situations of our time, this profound book identifies the depth of insanity of a man and the control of his regime but how one magazine emplemified that although physical structures can be torn down...the spirit can prevail. A true story that grassroots change is just as powerful as high-political movements.

Not only important for understanding Indonesia today but a typology for the region.

This is a fascinating report on TEMPO, a Time-like magazine founded in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1971. The book, by an American journalism professor and historian who has spend considerable time in Jakarta, some as a Fulbright lecturer and researcher (she learned the difficult language to better understand her subject) reviews the key people and events behind an elite news magazine in a developing nation. Along with a number of other journals, TEMPO was closed down in mid-1994 by the Soeharto regime. Publication resumed four years later after the regime fell. Steele was able to closely observe the revived journal's editorial process--a very useful window to how the process works within a developing nation which is the world's largest Muslim country. This is thus an insightful study--and a well written one, at that--into a magazine as important for the four years it did not appear (and its journalists worked elsewhere) as for the years before and after when it did and does. Steel places TEMPO in the context of its place and time, as well as its readers--the movers and shakers within Indonesian society. Recommended!

No need to give great detail: this is simply a marvelous book. It will enlighten you to human behavior, and you will see the world with new eyes after you digest Desmond Morris's observations. Fabulous photographic illus trations. One of the best things about the book is that you can pick it up on any page and dabble in it. It might be called "a bible" of human behavior.

Morris's trick here (as he states in the book) is to get us to look at the human body differently by having us see not the whole, but the parts. And Morris then proceeds to break down each and every part of the human body in depth. Ranging from the obvious (like hands) to the not so obvious (the beard), Morris uses profuse diagrams and photographs to illustrate how special and unique the details of each and every human being really is. Bodywatching is a wealth of knowledge about ourselves. If you are familiar with Morris's other writings, especially Manwatching, you might think that this book is just regurgitating old information, but that is far from the case. While Morris was concentrated on the masses of humans in books like Manwatching and The Naked Ape, in Bodywatching Morris is concerned with the individual alone. It is the difference between watching traffic at rush hour and watching the mechanic work on your car. This book will not fail to astonish even the most introspective person. This is truly a guide of self discovery which Morris has presented us with in Bodywatching.

This book is simply beautiful. The essence of spring is captured in beautiful prose. Illustrations are terrific but the words themselves conjure up such lovely images themselves. So much of "the little things" that often go unnoticed are brought to light here. The ticking of time is so quiet because we don't see what is around us. This book pulls out some of those transitions. So lovely.

This book is the age-old story of winter's end and the glad return of spring. It takes place at that one magical turning-point that comes every year when suddenly you notice spring has crept in and claimed the earth again. Most of the action takes place after sundown of the last day of winter. During the quiet night that follows spring unfolds and we are involved in the lovely stirrings of a greening world and her wild creatures. The lyrical text entices our senses to rise and remember spring. We are treated to very, very beautiful illustrations just filled with subtle and exquisite light from sunset to sunrise, to starry full-moon skies and soft lamplit lanes in the park. This book is a jewel and it will either make you long for spring or tide you over until it returns.

I've read many laymen level books about the Bible, and this one is the best. This book is not written for professional scholars; however it does a good job of doing the following:

1) It discusses the many English language versions and explains why a particular version might appeal to certain groups of people

2) Explains the difference between the Bibles that the Protestant churches, Roman Catholics Church, and Eastern Orthodox Churches uses

3) Explains the difficulties that Bible scholars encounter when they attempt to make a translation

4) Discusses higher criticism of the Bible, and explains current scholarly thought. In my opinion, he is honest about where he stands, and yet he explains the position of scholars which disagree with him.

The author also does a good job of directing the reader who wants to do further research. I'll probably never read the Bible in the same way again.

This is a funny book written in a poetry like style. The amusing illustrations are inspired on old wood engravings. But it's not only the story an the illustrations that are interesting. The book itself, the way it was published and distributed is also verry interesting and even romantic. In 1928 'spicy' books weren't allowed, not even in Paris France. So it was privately published in a small edition of which about 50 copies were hand coloured by the author. All books were sold by Djuna Barnes and some frends in secret along the Seine. With the help of Natalie Barneys copie the 1972 edition contains an explanation of the names used in the story and who they were in real life.

Djuna Barnes (June 12, 1892 - June 18, 1982) played an important part in the development of 20th century English language modernist writing by women and was one of the key figures in 1920s and 30s bohemian Paris.

Her novel Nightwood became a cult work of modern fiction, helped by an introduction written by T.S. Eliot, and stands out for for its portrayal of lesbian themes and distinctive style.

Barnes spent the last 40 years of her life as a recluse in New York city. Since her death, interest in her work has grown and many of her books, like this one, are now back in print.

Her books are lively, irreverent, and just plain fun to read in modern times. I highly recommend that you introduce yourself to this original author!

I'm a fan of Jeremy Wagstaff's writing, enoying both his articles in the Wall Street Journal and the postings at his blog. He brings a dry wit and an appealing, common sense perspective to the job of writing about technology.

This book is a compendium of his articles from the past few years. It's organized in four sections, devoted to "getting stuff done" (email, productivity tools and back-up advice), "getting connected" (WiFi, mobile phones and VoIP), "getting what you need" (browsers, blogs and RSS) and "getting out of trouble" (viruses, spam and credit card fraud). There's also an entertaining "Lexicon for Luddites," with some suggested terms for the modern age. "Wantage," for example, is defined as the shortfall between your present computer's capacity and that required to run the program you just bought.

It's an entertaining and informative read for anyone who's not getting all they could from their tools. Which to be honest, is just about everybody. Consider it highly recommended.

A wonderful book with common sense advice

Jeremy Wagstaff writes a terrific technology column for the Wall St Journal. This book is a compilation of some of these columns. Jeremy has an ability to explain things clearly without technical jargon. He faces tech problems like you and I and offers common sense solutions recommending products along the way. Perhaps because he works from Indonesia he offers a fresh perspective by looking at products available from around the world and problems that average non-techies face. He makes difficult subjects much easier to understand and writes in a breezy, flowing manner that makes his columns so popular. Highly recommended.
