Polyphilo or The Dark Forest Revisited: An Erotic Epiphany of Architecture

Perez-Gomez validates a classic through modern verse.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.

Perez-Gomez, professor of architecture at McGill University in Montreal, based his book of an ancient renaissance text entitled Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. It is still in debate who wrote this text, but it is of Italian origin. The fullness of this story is mind numbing, and engages the blood in its verse. I have joined the ranks of many authors in attempting an analysis of this piece of writing, but it seduces then defeats this urge. Through the medium of the verse, this art-piece uses words to touch below our cognitive level, accessing our emotions quite effectively. A brief study into Eros has been very necessary in respect to Perez-Gomez's book, which captures the same story in modern settings.

Breathing Deep the Spirit of Advent

Undoubtly the best guide book for the Advent Season I have ever read. David captures the essence of the season's beautiful scripture readings. The imagery of these readings will set your heart aglow. His meditations and prayers will set your mind on a journey to the reign of the Messiah. I found myself both affirmed and challenged on my spiritual journey. The season's readings are about peace, justice and the love of God for us - David has a way of engaging us that will make you return to this book year after year and yearn for it like a most cherished tradition. The reason for the season is Jesus.

I just read the best dating book ever! Secrets of the Ultimate Husband Hunter: How to Attract Men, Enjoy Dating and Recognize the Love-of-Your-Life by Nancy Nichols. It's funny, insightful and presents a clever, almost magical solution for the single woman's negative attitudes that create her dating and relationship problems. The author tells a light-hearted true story of how she realized that she was doing everything wrong while her friend, Camille, held the secret to attracting a Quality Man. It is her unique epiphany which offers the life changing actions that inspire a woman to take the focus off her insecurities, enjoy the dating process and ultimately gain her the love, respect, and happiness she deserves.

This book is for women who repeatedly commit to the wrong man, who lack confidence and self-worth with men, it's even for married women (or the committed woman) who want to enhance their current relationship. [...]

I hope you will share this information ---it has been a life changing experience for me.

A fine collection of advent sermons
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-05
This little book (it's only 60 pages) brings seven very fine Advent sermons by Thomas Long, who teaches preaching at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta. Though some of the illustrations are a little dated (the book was copyrighted in 1987), there is plenty of insight and illumination here. These are quality sermons, and as a pastor, I received considerable benefit from them. I recommend them highly.

The chapters (sermons) in this book are:
When Something is About to Happen (Mark 13:32-37)
What Do You Mean, "Repent"? (Mark 1:1-8)
There's a Man Going Around Taking Names (John 1:6-8, 19-28)
Where's the Treasure? (Luke 1:26-38)
Shepherds and Bathrobes (Luke 2:8-20)
They Also Serve Who Wait (Luke 2:25-40)
We Interrupt This Service (John 1:1-18)

Striker's Epiphany by James Brennan was such a good book that I couldn't put it down! Mr. Brennan really captures the readers attention with his detailed characters and themes. With suspense, romance, and humor all tied into an ending I was not expecting, it left me not wanting the last pages to come!!! I'm looking forward to reading more books from James Brennan:)

This book offers a unique perspective on family priorities
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.

Curran's research is thorough and unique. By studying happy, well-adjusted families, she has given parents hope. By listing traits to develop, she offers families clear priorites to choose from. The book is affirming and insightful. I first read it when it was first published (in the early 80's I think) and I'm proud to say that at 20 and 22 my children are happy.

Reveals the essence of the Christmas season and epiphany
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-18
This book is truly outstanding. One gets so caught up in the commercialsim of Christmas that one looses sight of the deep meaning of this religious season. Advent, Christmas and Epiphany are as significant to the Christian faith as the season of Lent leading up to holy week and Easter. The author catches this special spirit. It is well worth the effort of any person seeking the deeper spiritual side of Christianity to read this book slowly and daily over the season of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany so one gets back to what has been lost in modern, commercial times. Ms. McKenna does a subperb job in getting one in that spiritual setting.
