Suitable for preschoolers, this book is written from the perspective of the younger sister who is still too young to fast, but notices what her older brother is doing. I'm not very impressed with the illustrations; they make the family look like they are dumb or simple minded.

This book is good for a general introduction of
Muslim holidays to kids. My son was able to read
this book to his first grade class. As a Muslim
Mom I want to be able to use story books to bring
knowledge about our religion to the kids in a fun way.

Most Ramadan books are too difficult to read to my young students and I was missing that perfect book about this holiday. Now I can read them a book the students can enjoy and 1st and 2nd graders can read it on their own too! Thanks for the book, if only it had arrived sooner.

Title: Celebrate Ramadan & Eid Al-Fitr: with praying, fasting, and charity
Author: Deborah Heiligman
Published by: National Geographic Society
Review By: Diana Rohini LaVigne, Indian Life & Style Magazine
Beautifully photographed and impeccably written, National Geographic Society has added a much-needed book to their `Holidays Around the World' series. With the current state of confusion about the Muslim community, especially in America, Celebrate Ramadan & Eid Al-Fitr brings light to the rituals Muslim celebrate and united which includes praying, fasting and giving charity. Ramadan is a time for family, community and celebrating religious beliefs.
With breathtaking photos that depict the dedication of Muslims worldwide during this sacred holiday time, readers will be delighted with the simple explanations of the complex religious rituals. It's not only a book for teenagers but also for adults.
Towards the end of the book, there is a useful informational section called more about Ramadan. It offers facts about the holiday, more about the five pillars of Islam, an explanation of the Muslim Calendar, recipes to try, and a glossary for reference.
A wonderful book to explore, understand and comprehend the dynamic and important celebration of Ramadan. It should be required reading for high-school teenagers in America and accompany the other books in National Geographic Society's `Holidays Around the World' series.

I bought this book as an Eid-al-Fitr gift for my 9 year old step-daughter. I think it perfectly suits what I was shopping for: a simple explaination of what we do, why we do it and photographs of Muslims around the world who fast, pray, read Qur'an and celebrate just like we do. The book, writing, and all of the photographs are beautiful. At the end, there is a section with some "extras" where it explains the five pillars of Islam, the lunar calendar, dates of Ramadan for the next few years, recipes, etc. I know my step-daughter will enjoy this book and share it with friends. I would recommend this book to Muslim families or anyone who wants to share this important piece of Islam with children.

Deborah Heiligman's series : Holidays around the world is a good introduction to children unfamiliar with the holiday.
The pictures are amazing and well laid out. For someone who celebrates Eid, the pictures will seem incomplete because there are so many more aspects than can be represented in a 32 page book. But for someone who has no idea about Ramadan and Islam, this is a very good introduction. ITs also extremely easy for children to read on their own.

I'm so mad at myself for buying this based on one customer review. It has 19 pages(16 with mostly one sentence text and 3 with no text). The only informative page is the Author's Note in the back. It is not worth the 20 dollars I paid...oh, yes...I said 20 dollars. I'll be more careful next time. There are other books geared for children that are much more informative and still enjoyable.

How Not To Learn Another Language

This is the worst book I have ever used for learning Italian. Unfortunately, it is the core book for my uni course. The grammar explanations are awful and at times incomplete. The dialogues would be better off as a soap opera on T.V. The only slight advantage is that it has covered the passato remoto, la cordanza dei tempi (the more difficult stuff) by chapter 10. But what is the point in racing ahead with the grammar when listening, speaking and reading skills are being ignored.
I have been forced to use this book for almost 2 years, and I can barely say a sentence in the present tense even though we are in unit 12 grammar wise.
When I finish my semester at uni, before I go to Italy in October, I will be spending 5 months solid with a book from the BBC.

I teach Italian at the undergraduate level and this book is excellent. Having used other textbooks in the past, I have seen the difference in how much and how quickly students learn from "Parliamo italiano". If you are using this book on your own, I would recommend that you work with a tutor. It is not impossible to work with it on your own but you have to plan the material very carefully beforehand and stick to your plan.

Honestly, this was one of the worst aproaches to a language I have ever seen. The book is written completely out of order. It will not teach you how to speak Italian. At the most, you might learn how to write it... Poorly.
Good for conversation, weak on grammar

The focus is the spoken language, and it is effective. However, some of the instructions for the exercises (in Italian) are not very clear, and the grammar explanations (in English) are not adequate. (I purchased a concise grammar text to supplement this book.)
I like their casual approach to introducing new material (grammar & vocabulary) - new usages just pop into the dialogues and exercises occasionally in situations where the context helps clarify the usage. Soon after, the formal explanations are provided to help generalize. The approach helps prepare for real-life use of the language, in which a lot of new vocabulary and usage crops up.
horrible for a beginner

Confusing approach; improper sequence to develop concepts & vocabulary. I had experience with conversational Italian and another college text but I am finding this book a nightmare. If you are unfortunate enough to have it as a class text; buy supplemental books (dictionary, grammar, verbs...even another text)and maybe some Pimsleur tapes since conversation skills are shortchanged in this tedious text.

I purchased this book in the hopes that it would have printed MUSIC to use with my elementary students...it does not. I have no idea where to turn for Islamic songs for grades 1-4. There is only one Islamic student in the school, but I didn't want her to feel marginalized. Besides, a little Christian/Jewish/Muslim understanding would be good for us all!
