This book is filled with gorgeous, rich photography. Butterflies are enlarged to fill the 9.5"x 11.5" pages. The details are fabulous. Also included are some caterpiller and chrysalis stages. Every butterfly is set on a black background for a stunning effect. A real treasure!

Every page is a thrill!

I expected this book to be visually fabulous, and it is -- a blizzard of gorgeous photos of bizarre and amazing butterflies and moths, some so strange and exquisite that I exclaimed aloud as I turned the pages. What I didn't expect was the text, which is lively, authoritative, and chock full of fascinating details. Instead of following the usual format of describing the range, life cycle, food sources, etc., of each specimen, the authors have chosen an unconventional format perfect for those who, like myself, aren't biologists but just want to sample the strange wonder of nature's most beautiful creations. So, for instance, on page 171 we learn of a butterfly that lives in polar Siberia and flies far over ice and snow, a Himalayan butterfly which is the highest flying species in the world, and another species of which the females are completely aquatic! There is also much emphasis on interesting and important geographical and conservation issues. My only minor disappointment is that almost all of the photos are of dead specimens, so instead of getting to see the plump furry abdomens one sees only shriveled husks, but even with this necessary evil the book is a real treasure.

lavish lepidoptera

Review Date: 2004-01-03
This stunning book features 500 exquisite examples of one of the world's marvels, the elusive butterfly and moth family; set against black backgrounds, the colors and details stand out brilliantly, with many photos enlarged so we can see the intricacy of these miraculous creatures. At the most, there are six photos per page, and many are double page spreads of a single subject. There are detailed descriptions of the species, its environment, what it eats, as well as wonderful bits of informative lepidoptera trivia.

It is divided into five chapters:
"Butterflies and Moths of Africa", which includes the Urania Moth of Madagascar, "considered to be the most beautiful in the world", and the carnivorous Charaxes.
"Butterflies and Moths of Europe", which includes the Blue Lycaenidae, and a story of how certain of the caterpillars of its species are raised by ants, with cooperative feeding habits that are beneficial to both.
"Butterflies and Moths of the Americas". The species from Peru and Brazil are spectacular, and some have designs that remind me of Inca textiles, and wonder if these glorious butterflies were ever a source of inspiration for the weavers of cloth.
"Butterflies and Moths of Asia and the South Seas". Many of these are from New Guinea, and boast deep, rich colors and contrasts.
"Unusual Butterflies and Moths". These have wings that look like leaves or bark, as well as some that have been born with both male and female characteristics, because "genetic accidents can occur in the embrionic stage".
There are also many photos of caterpillars and chrysalis, and the final double page spread of the Eyed Hawkmoth caterpillar is a favorite of mine.

The pages are thick with a satin finish, and included in the back of the book is an index by family, an index of scientific and common names, and a glossary of terms.
Alain Eid is a nature journalist, and Michael Viard has been honored twice by the World Press for his photographic work, and together they have produced a sumptuous volume that will be appreciated by naturalists and butterfly enthusiasts.

I truly enjoyed reading this book. The illustrations brought it to life. I donated the book to the local elementary school and they loved it. What a nice way to make young students understand other cultures and traditions.

Warm hearted story about the celebration of sharing

This is a wonderful story about the joy and happiness that comes from giving. It teaches children that true celebration comes from sharing what you have with others. These values are common to Islam, Judaism and Christianity. This book has particular meaning at this time of the year as all three of these faiths celebrate special holidays this December. Indeed, it is better to give than receive.

Touching Book of a Godly Boy's Trials

Greetings in Peace,
This is the author's first book. I have heard that it was written and published while she fought with cancer in America. It is a collection of stories about a young boy named Musab. In the first story, Musab learns the difference between idol worship and God, our Creator. He and his mother rejected idol worship and became loving worshippers of God Almighty (Allah subhanna wa tala). The rest of the stories are about truth, friendship, forgiveness, and honesty. These themes are illuminated in a series of stories that bring the reader close to God and his little servant Musab. Children will benefit from seeing the boy's piety (taqwa) and concern for all mankind. This was a very lovely book that children will inshallah love to hear read to them, especially by Father or Mother. My daughter shed tears for the little Musab, mashallah.

Excellent Coding Text for The Beginner

I LOVE this book! I am an instructor and president of an online medical billing training website. I taught a CPT coding class last year, and the book the school required was horrible- I wished I had been able to use this worktext for the course!! Now that I have opened my own online training site, I am able to use this text for our 'CPT and ICD-9 Coding for the Medical Biller' course! It is an excellent text for an introductory course! Instructors, if you find your students are struggling with the current text you use---get a copy of this--you'll be so glad you did!

This book is a work of art. The photography so beautifully shows the detail of each specimen. It has inspired me to take even a closer look at my own collection and I have even started my own rock and mineral pictorial. When I look at the pages, no matter how many times, I still mavel at the beauty. Anyone interested in rocks, gems and minerals should have this book in their personal library.

Beautiful Book About Special Holidays

Review Date: 2008-05-29
Written by a young girl, this book captures the true spirit of the holidays of Ramadhan and Eid-ul-Fitr! The illustrations would be very appealing to a child as they have been created by a child.
This book explains the special Muslim holidays from a child's perspective and would therefore be a valuable tool to be used in schools when studying different holidays from various cultures and religions!
I highly recommend this book!
The month of Ramadhan will begin in the year 2008 on September 3.

Better than many other skills books

This is an excellent book! I have other skills books but find I prefer this one hands down. Many times I find myself reading this when I'll say to myself "wow, that is a very important concept or clinical alert regarding this skill but other books did not clue me in on it." Also, the photos are excellent and it is a very well organized and comprehensive book. I don't think you'll be sorry for the investment because it is so helpful whether you are just learning or are already practicing.

We actually use this as our lab book in class. It has procedures layed out step by step and has rationales for why you do it that way. It has been very helpful to us in class. Pretty easy to find what you're looking for, although I don't really like how they have the book divided up into sections.

Suitable for preschoolers, this book is written from the perspective of the younger sister who is still too young to fast, but notices what her older brother is doing. I'm not very impressed with the illustrations; they make the family look like they are dumb or simple minded.

This book is good for a general introduction of
Muslim holidays to kids. My son was able to read
this book to his first grade class. As a Muslim
Mom I want to be able to use story books to bring
knowledge about our religion to the kids in a fun way.

Most Ramadan books are too difficult to read to my young students and I was missing that perfect book about this holiday. Now I can read them a book the students can enjoy and 1st and 2nd graders can read it on their own too! Thanks for the book, if only it had arrived sooner.
