A Mystery and A TragedyReview Date: 2003-01-09
What do the mysterious inscriptions found at Easter Island say? And what were the stone statues for. Those are the mysteries of Easter Island.
The tragedy was what happened to the Easter Islanders. The westerners were not all evil, and the islanders themselves were not all good (e.g., they practiced human sacrifice) but the enslavement, kidnapping, rape etc. of the islanders by western maritime visitors is shocking even today. And the book tells that story too. So it is not just a book about the mysteries of Easter Island but about the almost complete destruction of it by Europeans and I am sad to say Americans.
And the two are related. If slavers had not taken hundreds of islanders to Chile to work as slaves, including the king and prince of the island, perhaps enough of the culture would have survived for western scholars to meet with those who could read the writings of the tablets. Perhaps we would really know why and how the islanders built their mysterious giants.
This book (published by Harry Abrams) is an English translation of one of a series of small, lavishly illustrated French historical guides. One really cannot go wrong with this series, whether in French or in English.
Everyone involved in this Easter Island book did a great job, and they produced a wonderful way for a beginner to learn about some of the strangest archeological sites on our planet.

The love, respect, & thorough care that has gone into Down Barnegat Bay might be unparallelled.
Those of us whose heritage is rooted down Barnegat Bay are deeply indebted to Mr. Jahn for his faithful preservation of our legacy - a legacy which could easily be lost from one generation to another if it were not for Mr. Jahn being there to remind us as life once was down Barnegat Bay. His book will inspire and refresh my reverence & stewardship for my ancestral homeland all the days of my life. . . Coleman R. "Down Barnegat Bay"...a trip well worth takingReview Date: 2000-08-02
this book. Down Barnegat Bay: A Nor'easter Midnight Reader is my
favorite chronicle of the maritime history and folklore of the Jersey
Shore. The historical narratives catapult the reader into an era when
the now densely populated areas along the Barnegat Bay were filled
with sailors, fishermen, Indians and farmers. Tales of shipwrecks,
pirates and the Lenni-Lenapi Indians along the Metedeconk River are
exciting to read and add immensely to the feeling of being
"transported in time" as do the many illustrations that look
as if they were taken from a scrapbook in your great grandparent's
attic (some of them may have been!). Down Barnegat Bay gives the
reader more than an appreciation for an area so rich in maritime
history and folklore..it TAKES them there.
For me personally, being
an avid and routine paddler of the Jersey Shore, Down Barnegat Bay: A
Nor'easter Midnight Reader has transformed my kayak trips on the bay
and canoe trips on the peaceful Metedeconk River
into a new communion
with the Shore area land and sea. Paddling "Down Barnegat
Bay", I can experience the exciting,
life affirming SynchronicitY
of the past and present moment.
Thank you Robert Jahn.

Easter EnigmaReview Date: 2006-11-17
Many contemporary New Testament scholars would say yes and point to numerous inconsistencies and variations. But John Wenham takes these narratives and shows that it is possible to harmonize the accounts into a comprehensive historical sequence. A measure of reasoned conjecture and historical imagination is unavoidable in an effort like this, and the book does not claim to be more than a possible reconstruction. Not all will agree with Wenham's reasoning and conclusions, but his creative approach will contribute to a renewed interest in the historical context of the resurrection.

He lived in Jerusalem in 1945 and begins the book with a layout of the city, taking the reader on a mini-tour through the city. He shows you where the tomb probably was, where Mark's house would have been (site of the Last Supper), where Mary and Martha would have lived, Caiaphas' house, etc. By the end of the chapter, you feel like you are experiencing a taste of the city circa 30 AD. He then unfolds each of the characters in the resurrection accounts (Mary Magadalene, Joanna, Mary of Clopas). People who might have seemed unimportant (such as Joanna) take on fresh new import in the book.
He then takes the reader chronologically through the major events of Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Because he elaborated the geography, you can almost feel yourself with the disciples congregating into two locations on Saturday with disappointment and uncertainity. By tracing the paths of people to and from the tomb, Wenham renders each of the gospels with fresh perspective (for example Matthew being told from Bethany, and John from inside Jerusalem). You will see how beautifully the gospels harmonize and that apparent contradictions melt away with close reading.
Wenham interacts with scholarly critics in the book, and you will understand important themes of genre as the book unfolds.
This book is profitable for anyone who wants to deeply understand the gospels. It will change your understanding of the New Testament.
Compelling, factualReview Date: 2006-02-26
The Bible's differing accounts of details of the resurrection seem to pose a problem for serious Bible students: how can scripture be historically accurate if the gospels don't agree? Whenham delves into the biographies of the witnesses and locates the places geographically. He makes good historical sense of scripture's seeming contradictions and forms a compelling argument for Jesus' resurrection.
An excellent apologetic resource that reads with all the interest of a detective story.

If you're looking for a basic discography, then I suggest looking elsewhere. But if you need details on every possible recording made by the ex-Fabs during the remainder of the 20th Century, then this is the book.
