This book is the original Women's Lib book. Its a story of a single mother bunny with 21 children. She has them so well organized that they even have time for fine arts in her home. She has no desire for a job, but attends the great Easter race one year. She impresses the grandfather bunny with her skill, wit, and speed that he chooses her to be the next Easter bunny.

She manages her household and her job as the Easter bunny single-handedly. It is a beautiful story full of love and wonderful pictures. It is an absolute classic.

This is a great book. Every project is adorable, the colors used add to the appeal. There is a wide variety of projects, from a tote bag, tea cozy, whimsical animals, etc. I find myself wishing for more time in a day so that I could make every project in this book. The author's style is unique and refreshing.

This book was definately one of the best craft books I have purchased to make Spring crafts with. Her directions are very easy to understand, and each project was a hit with family and friends. Her ideas are not overly cute, making them perfect for anyone. I have used her patterns for baby gifts as well as decorating my own home. I hope she continues to design. She is one of the best.

A very good book!

This book provides readers with many of the facts of Easter Island. I had heard about the stone statues, but had little knowledge of the history of the island. This book provided quite a bit of information on the history and covered all the theories of the statues and what they might mean and how they got there. An excellent book!

The best book to-date about Easter Island

This is a translation of "Des dieux regardent les etoiles -- Les derniers secrets de l'Ile de Paques" ("Gods gaze at the stars -- The last secrets of Easter Island"), Catherine and Michel Orliac's excellent little book about Easter Island. Easter Island and its mysteries -- from its huge statues to its strange hieroglyphics -- have been a magnet for crankery of all types, from the benign to the outrageous. How refreshing, then, it is to see such a delicious book, factual and balanced, with high-quality authentic illustrations on every page, every one of them well chosen and to the point. Almost everything you may ever want to know about Easter Island -- short of a tourist guide -- is there, with full sources and references. How so much information could have been packed in so few pages is a wonder. Complete, attractive and scholarly, this little book will appeal to all, even to the specialists. The illustrations alone are a never-ending source of wonder and delight. Highly recommended.

A Mystery and A Tragedy

Some mysteries may never be solved. Where did the Sumerian language come from? Who built the stones at Carnac and why? Who was buried in the Great Pyramid.

What do the mysterious inscriptions found at Easter Island say? And what were the stone statues for. Those are the mysteries of Easter Island.

The tragedy was what happened to the Easter Islanders. The westerners were not all evil, and the islanders themselves were not all good (e.g., they practiced human sacrifice) but the enslavement, kidnapping, rape etc. of the islanders by western maritime visitors is shocking even today. And the book tells that story too. So it is not just a book about the mysteries of Easter Island but about the almost complete destruction of it by Europeans and I am sad to say Americans.

And the two are related. If slavers had not taken hundreds of islanders to Chile to work as slaves, including the king and prince of the island, perhaps enough of the culture would have survived for western scholars to meet with those who could read the writings of the tablets. Perhaps we would really know why and how the islanders built their mysterious giants.

This book (published by Harry Abrams) is an English translation of one of a series of small, lavishly illustrated French historical guides. One really cannot go wrong with this series, whether in French or in English.

Everyone involved in this Easter Island book did a great job, and they produced a wonderful way for a beginner to learn about some of the strangest archeological sites on our planet.

Beautiful story and illustrations. Very moving- parents, remember to bring your kleenex! Could be a wonderful springboard into discussing personal experiences of God with young children, and persistence of faith. Also could incorporate into an open-minded discussion of Christianity and animals/pets (God's love for them and creation). I'm buying a copy for the children I don't even have yet! :)

From Publishers Weekly, February 23rd 2004 "Speirs's luxurious, gilt- accented paintings are an art aficionado's dream... Focusing on the religiously symbolic beast of burden, Gill Speirs opens the door to an inventive interpretation of Scripture... The elegant compositions consistently delight, depicting biblical events in Netherlandish style inspired chiefly by Pieter Bruegel the Elder."

Featuring the museum quality paintings of John Speirs, The Donkey And The Golden Light is a beautifully illustrated picture book by Gill Speirs about a young donkey named Bethlehem and the interaction he has with Jesus beginning the Messiah's birth and proceeding through the flight into Egypt, the baptism by John, the wedding feast at Cana, the events of the Last Supper, and finally with the Jesus' crucifixion at the hands of the Roman authorities. The breathtaking full-color, full-page artworks are of especial note, as they are inspired by classic paintings Pieter Bruegel the Elder. A moving and visually stunning story, The Donkey And The Golden Light would be a welcome popular addition to any picture book collection.

Every artist has a "swan song" within them, perhaps in this case "Mallard Song" is more fitting :)

The love, respect, & thorough care that has gone into Down Barnegat Bay might be unparallelled.

Those of us whose heritage is rooted down Barnegat Bay are deeply indebted to Mr. Jahn for his faithful preservation of our legacy - a legacy which could easily be lost from one generation to another if it were not for Mr. Jahn being there to remind us as life once was down Barnegat Bay. His book will inspire and refresh my reverence & stewardship for my ancestral homeland all the days of my life. . . Coleman R. Robert Jahn's Down Barnegat Bay: A Nor'easter Midnight Reader is a wonderfully illustrated maritime history showcasing the New Jersey shore during the Age of Sail. Originally published in 1980, this substantially revised and expanded edition of Jahn's informative and engaging text is superbly illustrated with more than 177 sepia illustrations (including 75 new images and nine maps). Down Barnegat Bay is a fascinating historical excursion covering Native Americans, European exploration and settlement, storms, pirates, ships, shipwrecks, the Life Saving Service, fishing, whaling, as well as the social life and customs of Barnegat baymen and the inevitable development of the region as a seaside tourism destination. Superbly written and presented regional history!

I cherish both my original (1980) and new Sesquicentennial Editions of
this book. Down Barnegat Bay: A Nor'easter Midnight Reader is my
favorite chronicle of the maritime history and folklore of the Jersey
Shore. The historical narratives catapult the reader into an era when
the now densely populated areas along the Barnegat Bay were filled
with sailors, fishermen, Indians and farmers. Tales of shipwrecks,
pirates and the Lenni-Lenapi Indians along the Metedeconk River are
exciting to read and add immensely to the feeling of being
"transported in time" as do the many illustrations that look
as if they were taken from a scrapbook in your great grandparent's
attic (some of them may have been!). Down Barnegat Bay gives the
reader more than an appreciation for an area so rich in maritime
history and folklore..it TAKES them there.

For me personally, being
an avid and routine paddler of the Jersey Shore, Down Barnegat Bay: A
Nor'easter Midnight Reader has transformed my kayak trips on the bay
and canoe trips on the peaceful Metedeconk River into a new communion
with the Shore area land and sea. Paddling "Down Barnegat
Bay", I can experience the exciting, life affirming SynchronicitY
of the past and present moment.

Thank you Robert Jahn.

Bright and colorfully illustrated by Emma Ovreman, Lisa and Lorraine Funari's The Easter Chicken tales the tale of a chicken who becomes envious of the Eater Bunny's fame. Overcome by jealousy, she hastily fires the Easter Bunny and decides that she will handle Easter by herself. But the job is too much work for just one chicken! She quickly realizes that everyone has certain talents and that working as a team is the best way to work. Two pages of text designated "Special Guest Young Author & Illustrator Section" have been specifically reserved for the express purpose of publishing the reader's own work making The Easter Chicken a truly delightful, "interactive" picturebook.

This is the poetic tale of a chicken, who feeling unappreciated, decides that she can do it all. For years she has laid the eggs but the bunny has gotten the glory. When confronted with the chicken's plan, the bunny offers a warning. Undaunted the chicken procedes with zeal. Illustrator, Emma Overman, has captured the chicken's emotions of pride, longing, joy and frustration. The story by Lisa Funari Willever and Lorraine Funari has been useful as I work with small groups of children who are learning the skills of team work. As a school psychologist, I often use stories to introduce an idea or a skill. The Easter Chicken, with its colorful illustrations and character building lesson has been added to my library.

This was the first book I read by this author and I must say he is not afraid of controversy. I found the dialogue between Jesus and the Devil and the descriptions of the various areas of Hell very interesting. However what really threw me for a loop was the ending. I won't spoil it for you but the ending makes you wonder what Jesus thinks about the current status of today's churches.

This book was a great and thought provoking read. The author uses such vivid and loaded imagery, some of which has been seared into my mind forever, and an equally disturbing imagination to describe the chambers of Hell that I was compelled to read page after page. Beyond the thrilling storyline, I was impressed with how the author compassionately wrestled with the posture and direction of the church and Christians alike that was both authentic and well crafted. You'll love this book on many levels. I highly recommend it.

Are the resurrection accounts in conflict?

Many contemporary New Testament scholars would say yes and point to numerous inconsistencies and variations. But John Wenham takes these narratives and shows that it is possible to harmonize the accounts into a comprehensive historical sequence. A measure of reasoned conjecture and historical imagination is unavoidable in an effort like this, and the book does not claim to be more than a possible reconstruction. Not all will agree with Wenham's reasoning and conclusions, but his creative approach will contribute to a renewed interest in the historical context of the resurrection.

Review Date: 2006-12-27
John Wenham is an author with whom many should be familiar. He taught Greek at Oxford University for many years, and is the author of first-rate books like "Christ and the Bible" and "Redating Matthew, Mark, and Luke." This book continues his excellent history of writing scholarly and accessible books.

He lived in Jerusalem in 1945 and begins the book with a layout of the city, taking the reader on a mini-tour through the city. He shows you where the tomb probably was, where Mark's house would have been (site of the Last Supper), where Mary and Martha would have lived, Caiaphas' house, etc. By the end of the chapter, you feel like you are experiencing a taste of the city circa 30 AD. He then unfolds each of the characters in the resurrection accounts (Mary Magadalene, Joanna, Mary of Clopas). People who might have seemed unimportant (such as Joanna) take on fresh new import in the book.

He then takes the reader chronologically through the major events of Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Because he elaborated the geography, you can almost feel yourself with the disciples congregating into two locations on Saturday with disappointment and uncertainity. By tracing the paths of people to and from the tomb, Wenham renders each of the gospels with fresh perspective (for example Matthew being told from Bethany, and John from inside Jerusalem). You will see how beautifully the gospels harmonize and that apparent contradictions melt away with close reading.

Wenham interacts with scholarly critics in the book, and you will understand important themes of genre as the book unfolds.

This book is profitable for anyone who wants to deeply understand the gospels. It will change your understanding of the New Testament.

Compelling, factual

An engaging assimilation of the four gospel accounts of the resurrection.

The Bible's differing accounts of details of the resurrection seem to pose a problem for serious Bible students: how can scripture be historically accurate if the gospels don't agree? Whenham delves into the biographies of the witnesses and locates the places geographically. He makes good historical sense of scripture's seeming contradictions and forms a compelling argument for Jesus' resurrection.

An excellent apologetic resource that reads with all the interest of a detective story.

An indispensible reference for those Beatleologists who tend to think their artistry didn't end with their breakup. As stated in a previous review, it's very well written, engaging, and oh yes, thorough.

If you're looking for a basic discography, then I suggest looking elsewhere. But if you need details on every possible recording made by the ex-Fabs during the remainder of the 20th Century, then this is the book.
