An excellent addition to the Rapa Nui library, with glorious color plates showing every aspect of the island. So many Easter Island books focus wholly on Easter Island's past, and the moai statues. This one includes excellent aerial views of the whole island and island life as well as its archeological splendors. A few too many of those pretty girls than can really be justified though, Carlos!

A Holy Week story
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-29
The pictures are colorful, with the majority of the pictures and text about the events of Holy Week. The last two pairs of pages are on the events of Easter morning and the following days. It has a nice question and answer section at the end. The paperback I bought is too wordy and a little dark for the preschool set. The content is suitable for all elementary grades, but the style of the illustrations will probably be unappealing to older children.

Appealing

This small book is very appealing for youngsters from, say, age 4 to 12. The older kids can read it to the younger ones. There are about 25 words per page. It's a board book, which makes it sturdy. It will survive lots of young hands handling it. Good gift for a Sunday school class.

Great Crafts for Every Holiday!

Review Date: 2007-01-20
This is a fantastic book for parents, teachers, or anyone who likes to make crafts. Moms and teachers especially are always looking for ways to make crafts that don't cost much. This book shows you how to make really cute and original projects out of things we would recycle (or throw away!). I recommend it highly!

Great craft book for kids

I got this book for my 5 year old daughter and 5 year old niece. They both love to make things and loved the items in this book. My daughter wanted to make so many things for each holiday, we didn't come close to making all of them. There are some items that are a bit lame, but the others make the book worth it. I only had to buy a few low cost craft items like felt squares, pipe cleaners, ribbon, and the like to make the items in the book. Everything else we had in the house (egg cartons, construction paper, material scraps, ...).
If you have "crafty kids" this is a good idea book for them. It would also be good for preschools, elementary schools, and churches.

Family Lenten devotional and Passover meal instructions
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-09
This is a collection of daily Lenten family devotions. Each day, you read a devotional, discuss some questions, pray, sing a suggested hymn (sheet music in the back), and hang a symbol (black and white circles you cut out of the book) on your Easter "tree." It concludes with instructions for a family Easter service and instructions (including recipes and a script) for a Passover meal.

An interesting approach to a hoilday that is undercelebrated

I liked the daily reading that start at Ash Wed. and end with Easter. A good beginning for you to get back to the true meaning of Easter.

Liberty or Death!

Review Date: 2000-10-27
It is so refreshing to read a work by an academic historian that has clear points laid out in the introduction, cogent arguments that are supported in the body of the text, and a writing style mercifully free of mind-bending jargon . Egerton combines the best of social history (focus on everyday lives of non-elites) with a discussion of the political mood of young nation searching for its own definition(s) of freedom. I would heartily recommend this work for anyone attempting to understand slave resistance and the varieties of the slave "experience" in North America. This is a great addition to an already expansive literature on slavery, and I look forward to reading Egerton's recent work on Denmark Vesey.

A Must Read!

Review Date: 2000-08-05
Egerton does a masterful job of placing slavery within the broad context of revolutinary America. Gabriel's rebellion was born not only out of the opression of slavery but out of the political theory embodied in the Declaration of Independence and the conflict betweent the Republicans and Federalists to determine whether those principals would be part of American life. To a large extent, Gabriel was doomed because he believed that the political rhetoric of the Republicans extended beyond men with white skin.

Most intersting is the discussion of the very real attempts to end slavery in Virginia after the rebellion. There is some real irony that Jefferson - the father of American democracy - was the one that killed any hope for the peaceful end of slavery. In the end, Egerton is correct that once Virginians decided to continue their peculiar institution, that opressive control of slaves rather than the principals that the revolution was fought over had to be the controlling philosophy.

This is a must read for anyone who wishes to understand how slavery fit within the context of American political thought.

Very exciting and a mixture of sad and hopeful

I read this book after Gerard Whelan came to our school and explained why he wrote it. He said that a lot of the problems in Ireland today are caused by people getting upset about what they think happened in history and he wanted to find out what really happened. This is a really exciting story about children's adventures during the Easter Rising and at the end you realise it isn't about baddies and goodies but about real mixed up people. I am 13 and I think anyone who enjoys adventure stories would enjoy this one.

Brilliant Irish historical novel

Review Date: 1998-12-01
This is an adventure story located in the turmoil of Dublin during the 1916 rebellion. As well as being a gripping adventure, it's a great introduction to modern Irish history.

I've recommended it to older friends as well as younger ones and most of them have read it at one sitting.

The hero of the novel spends Easter week dodging the firefights and explosions which are racking Irelands capital.

Through his travels the book introduces us to a varied cast of characters on both sides of the Irish struggle. As well as the British soldiers there are the various Irish groups that came together to oppose them: the working men of the Citizens army, the poets and writers of the Irish volunteers and the ordinary citizens of Dublin.

The young boys life is often in danger, but through his eyes we are privileged to see the sacrifice and determination which is bringing Ireland it's freedom.

While the hero of the novel is dodging the raking fire of machine guns and the heavy thud of Mauser bullets we're given a fascinating picture of Dublin and it's inhabitants.

One of the things I most enjoyed about this book was it's attention to detail and it's great period accuracy. But after reading it I also understood more fully the political events that are happening in Ireland now.

This is a fun book for my grandson and I to read, he is not yet a year old, but loves the colors, and hearing the story read to him. Its a nice way to begin telling a child about the love of Jesus early.

This little book is a nice size and shape for small hands. The curious lamb encourages young children to find out what's happening on the first Easter morning. The egg-shaped pages are also pastel colored like Easter eggs. This would make a charming little gift.

This is a fun book for parents and young children to share together. As the little girl and her puppy, Biscuit, hunt for Easter eggs, children will want to join in by lifting the flaps to discover where the colorful eggs are hidden. A little mouse joins the girl and her puppy on each page and some children will have as much fun looking for the mouse as they do looking for the eggs.

Excellent writing, excellent illustrations
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-10
In this excellent book, children's author Elizabeth Winthrop takes the story of Jesus' crucifixion from the gospel of St. Matthew, and, remaining true to the King James Version original, adapts the story for the young reader. Going along with the text is Charles Mikolaycak's wonderful illustrations, which have subdued colors and a style that goes a long way in supporting the text.

Now, this is the unvarnished Biblical text, and the images of a bleeding Christ might be a bit much for very young readers. But, that said, if you want to introduce the young person in your life to the real reason for the season of Easter, then I highly recommend this book!

It is a good tool to use to share the Resurrection of Christ with young children. This adaptation stays true to the text of the King James version of the Bible and the illustrator's interpretation of the text is inspiring.

The book I am reading is Hoppy Easter. The author of the book is Patricia Hermes. I would give the book a 4 star. I gave it 4 stars because it makes me want to have something I really want. It would have been a 5 star book if the author added more new characters and other places to take place. I chose this book because Easter is one of my favorite holiday. This book I am reading has no awards. This book is fiction. It be a good book for 8-10 year old because little kids won't understand the ideas. The setting is at the house and at school. The characters are Katie, Katie wants a bunny. Obie is her brother. Tiffany is a spoiled. Also Mrs. Henry is their teacher. The problem in the story is that Katie wants a bunny but she can't have one. Will she get the bunny? Other books by this author are Westward to Home, Our Strange New Land, The Starving Time , The Perfect Place

I bought Turkey Trouble and read it aloud to my first graders. They loved the book. Then I bought Hoppy Easter and we were delighted to find out that Turkey Trouble, Hoppy Easter, Christmas Magic and My Secret Valentine were all about the same characters... Katie Potts and her brother Obie. They are wonderful! I am now searching for Something Scary but I am having a difficult time. If anyone can help me find Something Scary I would be very grateful. If you teach these books are a must for K-3.
