An excellent telling of the Resurrection for little ones
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1998-04-02
This book is beautifully illustrated and explains the sorrow of Christ's passion and the joy of the Resurrection in a way that even the smallest child can understand. It is rapidily becoming a Lenten classic at our house, and my two year old daughter requests it often!

Spanish Version of Famous Marcus Pfister Book
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-21
This is a Spanish language version of a Marcus Pfister book originally wrote in German. We know him as the author of Rainbow Fish, but he has written many wonderful stories including this one, about a rabbit searching for another very special rabbit. Another wonderful thing about North-South Books is that not only are they written in German but translated into many languages as well, such as English and Spanish! I even have a Rainbow Fish written in Vietnamese!

This is such a sweet story. I have MANY books in our shelves at home and I truly feel so good when I read this book to my two sons. I highly recomend THIS COPY for your children or Grandchildren....

A scientist looks at the mystery of lent
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-27
I'm again looking forward to reading a section of this book each day during Lent. This season gives a superb opportunity to formally look at subjects we'd normally like to avoid, but which are best not avoided too much. The author shows how the scientific method can look at Lenten traditions with a new perspective, and how the religious method can give science an added dimension of humility, mystery, and wonder.
The book has been divided into seven sections: an introduction, Creation, Reality, Searching, Prayer, Suffering, and Holy Week. In my opinion, the author gives a wonderful outline. After spending forty days with this book, you may have experienced a delightful blend of reason and wonder, and may understand how a scientist can find value in the dimension of the spirit.

Fresh and Relevant Lenten Resource
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-21
Referencing sources as diverse as St. Augustine, psychiatrist Robert Coles, and movie director Woody Allen, Fr. Foley invites us to "ponder our lives and to open our listening hearts to the voice of God." His reflections are based on one or more of the lectionary readings; Sunday entries contain selections from Year A, B, and C. Each reflection is roughly two pages long and begins with the Scripture citation and a brief statement of theme.

In Luke's story of the Pharisee and the tax collector (18: 9-14), for example, Fr. Foley chooses the theme of humility as the true basis of prayer, cautioning us against adopting the modern notion that feeling good about oneself is a sign of health. "A better gauge of our spiritual health is how we look upon our neighbor," he writes. The reflection on the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15: 1-3, 11-32) also deals with self-righteousness, but the author attributes the fault to both sons. The prodigal's self righteousness is based on his not being self-righteous like his brother. "Such a disclaimer not only proclaims one's moral superiority, but also can even contain a sort of boast," Foley writes. "It's the pride of the initiated sophisticate who smiles down with condescension upon is inexperienced brother."

A Season of Rebirth is a good choice for individuals and small groups looking for a fresh and relevant Lenten resource.

This composition is a powerful, moving work for Good Friday services. The music is moderately difficult, but with practice time, any competent choir can master it, and they'll be glad they did. An oboe and flute add a great deal to the depth of the music, but the vocals and organ accompaniment stand alone very well. This 7-piece meditation is lovely and affecting.

Excellent! I took this book with me on directed retreat this year and can't say enough good about it. I will use it later this year in a program I facilitate as a Pastoral Minister. I have purchased it for a friend as a gift and he too found it useful and well done.

Carolyn Brown's "Sharing the Easter Faith with Children" is a great resource for Christian educators, Sunday School teachers and especially parents. Sometimes children lose the good news of Easter in the egg hunts and chocolate bunnies, this book refocuses on the ways to prepare families with ideas for Lenten observances, Palm Sunday and Maundy Thursday services.

Carolyn Brown's writing is clear, challenging and her outlines are realistic.

Absolute Inspiration
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-27
I have been a christian for over 25 years and after reading "Six Hours One Friday" by Max Lucado, I was deeply inspired by the decision I had made all those years ago. There is not enough time in the human life to express the emotion, feelings, love and true desires we all have time and time again, however, by walking our way through some of the chapters of this work, it is easy to see how we are watched over and protected by our Lord as He ministers in our lives. I was especially impressed by chapters 7 & 11 in this book. I have read the entire book several times, but I confess, I continually return to these two chapters to regain strength for life. God has truly blessed the pen of Max Lucado.
