Great literal translation by Ann Altman of material which is hard to get in French, and most of which is translated into English here for the first time. This time period is at the nadir of Easter Island society, their climb back is a tribute to their resiliency.

Long Lost Poetry of Easter Island
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-01
Written nearly 30 years ago when travel to Easter Island was by ship and occasional plane, this is one of the few books which have considered the lives and thoughts of those few people living THEN on this lonely island. Nowadays Easter Island is almost a tourist resort. The original poetry translated into English is seldom mentioned in contemporary discussions. Dr Day was working with lepers on Easter Island. He stayed there primarily to carry out medical work, but during his stay he collected these wonderful writings and set them into English. These writings are as important as the aecheological artifacts that seem to attract everyone to the omission of thoughts about the people who live there.

The Passion of Christ is at Hand
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-08
Arditti has skillfully woven together the many lives that make up the parish of St Mary-in-the-Vale as it prepares for Easter. The Passion of Christ is relived in the experiences of the clergy, parishioners, and the greater diocese. A questioning Vicar, his wife, Jessica (whose character is particularly well drawn), a gay Curate...haughty matrons, young lovers, men with AIDS, and (wittily) Queen Elizabeth provide the central cast, with a cartoonish (then tragic) bishop and twisted archdeacon, and various congregants adding color. The contrast between Evangelicals and Anglo-Catholics is black and white -- true to reality in the Church of England or not? Christ, salvation, liberation, the meaning of the Cross are all explored. Warning to the cautious: graphic homosexual scenes -- not titillating, but very honest. Top notch. Many (but not all!) seminarians loved it.

Great Book

I bought this book for my young son to help explain that "Easter" is more than the bunny... Well, it has become his current favorite book and a springboard for more in depth talks about Jesus. I am already searching for the other books in the series. The illustrations are very friendly and cartoon like and the "flaps" are actually an intergral part of the story. Best use of flaps that I have seen. The Easter story of Jesus is nicely explained without the blood & gore that I feel is inappropriate at this age. The text flows nicely and is an "easy" story to read out loud to my child. I would highly recommend this story.

PHENOMINAL, ENCHANTING AND DEEPLY MOVING

It would be quite impossible to overstate how utterly beautiful and very deeply moving Jan Pienkowski's modern illuminated Gospel is; how astoundingly well it works with the classical text of the Gospel of St. Luke. Mr. Pienkowski's "Easter" captures beautifully the holy events chronicled in the Gospel, yet in a way I have yet too see in any other work this side of Heaven. In summary, it is a true magnum opus of awesome brilliance.

A few years ago, I happened upon this little gem of a book in a quirky little bookstore, and bought it for my wife as an Easter gift. -- What a hit! As a matter of fact, she STILL shows it off (to lots of ooh's and ahh's) when friends and family visit from Lent to Easter.

I often wonder if Jan Pienkowski will ever create more inspirational books like "Easter" again; let's pray he will. In the meantime, if you can lay your hands on a copy, BUY IT! You will *NOT* be disappointed.

I love this book

In this lovable book, a young girl shares her happy thoughts about Easter. Together with her family, she colors Easter eggs, goes to church to hear the Easter story, experiences a family get-together, and hunts for Easter eggs. This is a nice, gentle story for you to read to your little ones. What I liked best is the way that the reason for Easter is included so nicely. I love this book, and highly recommend it to you.

This book provides good information on Easter and is easy to read for those still in the emergent stages. My students enjoy the rookie reads for clarifying information and getting a clearer idea on a topic.

An outstanding book for all ages, not just the children.
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.

The Easter Angels captures the very essence of our Christian faith and focuses on the beauty of the Risen Christ. For children, it tempers the lessons of the Crucifixion with the true joy and beauty of the Resurrection. I especially loved the ending to this beautiful story. It offers so much hope to all of us who believe in Jesus as our Savior.

My daughter was six months old when she received this book as a gift from Grandma. It really is a great book for a baby because the colors are so vivid. She turns through the pages over and over again. (All of the razzle dazzle books are excellent).
