This book is a wonderful, consise and simple way to explain the events leading up to Easter to children. It covers all the major events in a clear way that children can understand. It would be wonderful for parents or teachers. The illustrations are nice, too. Although the subject matter deals with extreme suffering and death, nothing in this book is "gory" or "too scary."

As with all the booklets in Muncaster's "Examine the Evidence" series, this booklet packs a powerful punch of highly compelling and abundant evidence that the Bible must have been divinely inspired. Excellent concise, yet comprehensive presentation. The booklet size makes the content quickly digestable (and skeptical friends may be more likely to actually read it.)

WHAT IS THE PROOF FOR THE RESURRECTION
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-25
"WHAT IS THE PROOF FOR THE RESURRECTION" IS A VERY EXCITING BOOK. AS WITH ALL OF THE BOOKS IN" INVESTIGATE THE EVIDENCE" SERIES IT IS VERY EASY TO UNDERSTAND AND DOES NOT TAKE A LONG TIME TO READ. THE RESURRECTION IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF A CHRISTIANS BELIEFS AND ALSO THE PLACE WHERE MOST SKEPTICS WILL TRY TO TEAR DOWN CHRISTIANITY. THE BOOK IS FILLED WITH ANSWERS AND EVIDENCES TO THE REAL TOUGH QUESTIONS. FOR INSTANCE, WHY DID JESUS TALK ABOUT BEING IN THE GRAVE THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS, WERE THE GUARDS REALLY IN A POSITION TO BE ASLEEP LIKE THEY CLAIM, NON-CHRISTIAN EVIDENCES TO THE DEATH AND RESURRECTIN OF CHRIST,WHEN THE FIRST EASTER MOST LIKELY OCCURED. THE MOST INTERESTING PART IS ABOUT THE PROPHICIES ABOUT CHRIST DEATH AND RESURRECTION.( ONE FULL PAGE.)ALSO THE PAGES ON "THE PROPHECIES--STATISTICAL "PROOF" " IS VERY INTERESTING.THE DESRIPTION OF THE DISCIPLES FAITH AND TESTIMONY( EVEN WILLING TO DIE FOR THEIR BELIEFS.) IS VERY COMPELLING EVIDENCE OF CHRIST RESURRECTION. AFTER READING THIS BOOK, YOU WILL REALLY HAVE TO BE CLOSE MINDED TO NOT AT LEAST GIVE CONSIDERATION TO THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST. READING THE BIBLE IS THE BEST WAY TO LEARN OF CHRIST, BUT I FEEL A BOOK LIKE THIS WILL SERVE VERY HELPFUL IN ANSWERING SOME OF THE QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE. A REAL FAITH STRENGTHENER. MIKE WINTON

Expertly Written Twist on the Passion Narratives

Review Date: 2007-02-20
Richard Exley has insightfully provided a glimpse into what it may have been like to Witness the Passion from the viewpoints of several key players. This book is a great way for people old and young to reconnect with their faith or simply deepen their interest. As a college student studying the New Testament, I was able to visualize the Passion Narratives and have a deeper understanding after reading this book. I was lucky enough to meet Mr. Exley where he presented me a copy of this book and without any words of persuasion, he helped me find my faith that had waned in prior years. I highly recommend this book to all readers.

This book is a snapshot of what it might have been like looking through the eyes of those close to the death of Jesus. It looks from the perspective of Mary, Barabbas, and others. It gives a fresh view for everyone!! A great book to give to seeker friends with an amazing presentation of the Gospel throughout.

18 Powerful Cross Centered Holy Week Sermons
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-02
What a collection! The 18 Holy Week sermons that Luther preached in 1529. And to think that a preacher today might have to preach seven or so sermons in this same period, given that most of us do not preach on the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday of Holy Week as Luther did. Also, contributing to this load was the fact that his fellow preacher there in Wittenberg, Bugenhagen was on the road with Visitation. So the task left to Luther.

What comes clear from reading these sermons is his skill and sole focus on demonstrating the authority and power of the Word to provide faith in the means of grace. In the first series of sermons on the efficacy of the Holy Supper, then the remainder on the crucifixion/resurrection. Against all emotions and reason, Luther continues to hammer away at self and points to the cross and empty tomb to be our hope, our forgivness, our salvation, our resurrection of the body.

Great reading for devotion, for sermon prep. Excellent art included with the woodcuts etc. of likes of Durer and Cranach.

This short volume is a heart rending, soul opening treasure for the celebration the Lenten season and in preparation for Easter.

It is a sort of Stations of the Cross, using the words of the Gospels to take your heart and mind into worship and prayer particularly relevant to the season.

It should be in print. It is priceless.

I would recommend it to believers, new and old.

Great Variety

"Five Short Dramas" is an understatement. There are quite a few bonuses, including a Good Friday Tenebrae service, prayers, poems, and readings. The title is a little misleading. In my opinion, "Lenten Drama Collection" would be more appropriate.

The first drama calls for 18 men and covers the events from preparing for the Last Supper to the crucifixion. Congregational Communion can be included, and it calls for a choir. It's long, but effective.

The second drama is an Easter Sunday program designed for youth with a reader, Mary Magdelene, an Angel or two, and Jesus' voice. Adults would be effective too. There is a worship leader, congregational singing and litanys.

The third is my favorite because it brings focus to present-day life. It is a drama between a woman dealing with every-day hassles and Jesus, and is very powerful. It's good for the weeks during Lent.

The fourth drama is a Peter monologue, reminiscing about his life--mostly Pentecost. The actor needs a good memory because it's long.

Lastly is "Caterpillars." Designed for 3 youth and a narrator, it deals with doing God's will and the consequences of your decisions. It's very effective with a strong salvation message.

The Tenebrae Service includes fifteen readers who extinguish candles after their verses. We made a few variations when we used it, including having a Jesus off-stage who read his lines, an a capella solo at the end, and used various sound effects for additional drama.

After Easter by Anne Devlin
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-02-10
"The title 'After Easter' owes as much to Yeat's poem 'Easter 1916' as to George Steiner's book 'After Babel, After Easter'," says Anne Devlin. The title of the play can be interpreted in many ways and although Devlin herself attributes it to the titles above we can see clearly that it has large significance in relation to the action of the play. The play begins just before Easter 1996 when Greta, the main character, goes on a journey to discover her own identity. She is searching throughout Easter but the fulfilment of her quest does not come until after Easter when we see her in the final scene.

As the play moves on we see Greta is not along in her insecurity as 'After Easter' is about much more than one woman and her search for security, love and the understanding of her own identity. Devlin portrays the dysfunctional Flynn family's struggle for their own separate and true identities. In the play we learn a lot about each of the characters, especially the three sisters and it is interesting to see how each family member copes with the problems that they are faced with and the transformations that they go through during the course of the week in which the play is set.

Although Devlin claims "it is not a political play, it is a psychological play", the issues raised are clealy not just psychological. Although the main story revolves around Greta's 'insanity' and looks at what the contrasting characters regard as 'right' and 'wrong' in the main aspects of religion, love and death, the problems of Northern Ireland play a large part in moving the story along and initiating situations that reveal much about the individuals.

'After Easter' is not a play which clearly states its purpose or meaning. It will mean something different to everyone, but what somebody directing this play should try to do is simply enhance the points which they think are most important to Greta's development. You can choose to focus on the Northern Ireland problem, the idea of 'banshees', the religion, the family, the politics or the 'insanity'. However, I feel that the different issues are equally important and that Devlin intends you to explore the conflict between them.

'After Easter' is an exellent play and as The Observer wrote: "Anne Devlin's marvelous new play is rich, dense and poetic, beautifully written and very funny", I would have to agree!

You are in the GPO and you are surrounded
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-01
Wow you are completely transported to Dublin 1916 and you are in the General Post Office. This very well researched, very scholarly book, reads like a novel. I have researched this topic endlessly, and know more about it than I care to tell, and I still found myself turning the pages to find out what happened next. My only disappointement was that in 1916 the rebels split up into several small groups. One intent on taking St. Stephens Green (a park in Dublin) one to take Boland's Bakery, one to take the Four Courts, and one to take Dublin Castle, along with the main body that was to take over the GPO for the rebel's headquaters. Only the GPO is covered in this book, but covered magnificantly. If two or three other books were published by Mr. Coffey detailing the others areas of the rebellion in this same manner, with the same attention to detail, and the same thoroughness, I would buy them immediately. His description of the death of the O'Rahilly is as tragic and ironic as the rest of the rebellion. This book is an absolute must have book for any library displaying even the smallest section on Irish History. Fantastic!

Over fifty stickers can be used and reused on glossy scenes of the family kitchen, Arthur's classroom or a local park. Activity pages include coloring, word search, mazes, matching, a crossword, hidden pictures and a lesson in how to draw Arthur. There's also an answer page. Lots here to keep an Arthur or D.W. fan busy for a while, and a nice introduction to various puzzle types.

Stickers depict many characters from Marc Brown's series as well as Easter-themed objects. Very nice.
