Hardcover edition. My mom bought this book for me after I wouldn't stop raving about it after checking it out of our local library. Chinese culture has always fascinated me and this book gave me an overall idea of the culture. Great recipes of traditional food, a variety of craft projects for kids of all ages, and tales of how the traditions started. It also includes an overview of Chinese holidays such as the Chinese New Year, the Dragonboat Festival, and the Festival of Lights. *Mom's footnote - My daughter was born in the year of the Dragon.

We are in the long wait for an adopted sister from China and this book has been invaluable for communicating to our son what his soon-to-be sister's culture is like. It is beautifully illustrated and great for teaching him and preparing him for the holidays we will be celebrating. Very informative with great crafts and recipes. The festival introductions are great as well. We have actually made a few of the crafts. The puppet show was a huge hit!

An exciting festival time.

This is the story of the cultural and historical origins of the dragon boat festival celebrated in China and by the Chinese around the world. Dragon boats represent the effort of villagers to protect the spirit of one of the emperor's advisors who drowned himself in the river. Many other legends accompany this festival, including the story of a nightmare from an emperor in the 700's who dreamed of a ghost. This book provides a nice overview of the legends and customs from the past and the celebrations today of this exciting festival time.

If you haven't jumped into a dragon boat yet and paddled, this is a great intro to the sport and history of the greatest team sport for people of all ages and ANY skill level!! The stroke instructions and illustrations are very well put together for the most novice paddler. The history and current status of the sport is also well composed for those who would like to know what the rave is all about! I have certainly enjoyed all the graphics and photos. For those that i have referred this book to--new and experience paddlers as well as sport enthusiasts--have all agreed with its comprehensive introduction to the sport that has been growing and growing in the USA. Paddles up!!

This is a good book for younger readers as an introduction to Chinese festivals. As a parent of a child adopted from China, I feel it is important to give her as much knowledge about her birth country as possible, and this volume is colorful and easy to read.
