The art and photography are top notch, and the Muertos figures are charming!

Once you pick up this book, you had better be prepared to stay there reading until the end. Lots of plot twists to keep
you involved - and some extraodinary characters, especially the main baddie, Vaughan Darke. I look forward to the next novel.

Garciagodoy book opened my eyes to the depth of history and spirituality that is integral to the Day of the Dead. Her book
is an unusual combination of scholarship and personal reflection. As an American whose family and culture pushes death aside
as taboo, I was enthralled by how Mexicans remember and love their dead with humor and reverance. A reminder that under our
skin we are all skeletons and that our dead deserve our continued love and remembrance. As described by Garciagodoy the celebration
of Day of the Dead is an opportunity to bring death and the dead into the lives of the living in a manner rarely seen in the
United States. One caveat: her book is not a coffee table book to be skimmed in an evening. It is an in-depth exploration
of a fascinating subject. For those who are really interested, it is a must read.

"'The only marvel I have had all my life has been that the Lord ever chose me for anything, especially as an apostle and
as President.' This statement by President Wilford Woodruff typifies his modest and humble demeanor, the fruit of a life
lived close to the Spirit.
This book contains a selection by G. Homer Durham of expressions from the addresses of this great man and prophet. For background, its preliminary pages give a chronological listing of the highlights in his life, plus an informative foreword by Elder John A. Widtsoe. In the selections too are interesting glimpses of the man himself by way of his life experiences told in the first person- his conversion to the gospel; his baptizing of six hundred people in one community in England; his experiences with Church leaders from the early 1830s on; his first meeting and other experiences with Joseph Smith; and so on.
Here is a firm testimony to the Prophet Joseph Smith's calling, from one who knew him intimately. Elder Woodruff speaks too on a wide range of gospel subjects- agency, salvation, revelation, priesthood, temple work, constitutional liberty, the Second Coming. The prayer he offered in dedicating the Salt Lake Temple is also included. All this and much more is found in this collection of choice extracts from the addresses of the fourth President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."

This book can be read as an extended literature review, a sociological account of radical social movements, or a valorization
of non-hegemonic politics. It is a refreshing break from poststructuralist authors who are unable to communicate in language
that can be understood without a PhD. This book can be read by activists and academics alike. One of Day's aims is to highlight
the problematic orientation towards hegemony within social and political thought and social movements. His critique is nuanced,
leaving room for considerations of and orientations towards hegemony, while opening up a whole new field of possibilities.
It is not so much that Gramsci is dead, but that he is forced off center stage by a different form of politics. Day's argument
isn't simply a critique of hegemonically-oriented forms, but rather a celebration of what he calls 'the newest social movements'
which operate outside the logic of hegemony. Day's appropriation of post-structuralism, anarchism, postanarchism, postmarxism
and other theories are both insightful and clear.

This is from the book- jacket." The judgment of the dead- the idea that a life after death and the nature of that life will
be determined by the individual's moral conduct while on earth-is one of the most remarkable and significant beliefs of mankind.
The belief first emerged in ancient Egypt about 2400 B.C. where it found its most elaborate expression.. ( This work) is the first comprehensive study in English of this important and fascinating subject."
Brandon studies this idea as it was held in Ancient Egypt, Ancient Mesopatamia, in what he calls 'The Hebrew Religion' Graeco- Roman Culture, Christianity, Islam, Iran, China and Japan.
This is how Brandon concludes the chapter which was of most interest to me on the ' Hebrew religion' "Whereas the Egyptian anticipation of a judgment after death stemmed from that complaints might be made hereafter against one's conduct in this life, for the Hebrew post- mortem judgment meant God's ultimate assertion of his sovereignty over his creatures. And so the Talmudic conception really continues in a post- mortem and a personal context, the belief enshrined in the fourth commandment" I Yahweh your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those that hate me, but showing steadfast love to those who love me and keep my commandments."
