This first hand account of life in early Corpus Christi, Texas along with the background information provided was an invaluable resource for me in researching and understanding my own family's immigration from Germany to Texas in the 1840's.

Adroitly edited by Texas historian Bruce S. Cheeseman, Maria Von Blucher's Corpus Christi: Letters From The South Texas Frontier, 1849-1879 presents the correspondence by a young German-American pioneer who made a new life in Texas with her husband. Here portrayed are first person accounts of weathering Indian raids, droughts, the American Civil War, and the development of a town that her descendants would help evolve into a great city. A touching, personal narrative that takes the reader deep into the joys, frustrations, tribulations, and triumphs of pioneer life, Maria von Blucher's Corpus Christi is a superbly presented and highly recommended contribution to Pioneer Studies and Texas History supplemental reading lists and reference collections.

I find it interesting to hear personal testimonies like these because they give us a look at Catholic contemplative life of nuns today, and how women came to live such lives. So many people these days live such self-centered lives, it's a gift to hear from people who can move beyond themselves and live their lives for God and other people.

I liked it--a book of literary stories anchored around the town of Corpus Christi. By the end of the book all the stories fit together and gave it the feel of a novel. If you like literary short stories, you'll like Corpus Christi.

The book was well-written and read quickly, but the stories themselves were a bit on the depressing side, and many had the same theme: man and woman meet, fall in love, have kid, kid dies, relationship goes down the crapper.

Bittersweet Stories of Love and Death in Texas

Review Date: 2005-03-10
Bret Johnston's debut collection of fiction signals the arrival of a master storyteller. These are glimpses of lives in a minor key, as his characters struggle to continue in the face of tragedy. At the heart of this book is a novella in three parts which tells the death by cancer of a woman and the son who cares for her in her illness. You won't forget this mother and son; their sadness is palpable, something so authentic you may feel like looking away but can't, it's that real, that wrenching.

An Exquisite, Powerful Debut

One of the biggest literary errors made by new (and even some veteran) writers is to trumpet THE BIG, EMOTIONAL EVENT. Not so with Bret Anthony Johnston's exquisite, powerful debut collection, "Corpus Christi." Whether dealing with madness, a father's violence or broken marriages, Johnston uses both restraint and often humor to paint characters who are as real and flawed as any in modern literature. "Corpus Christi" brings us to places plumbed by Annie Proulx and Dagoberto Gilb but with Johnston's own remarkable imprint.

A Wonderful Collection

sexy folktales of the Carribean with plenty of farce thrown in
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-23
This book was excellent. It was a blend of local folktales unique to the Carribean and erotica--and with humor and farce as well. The tales are risque and not for the easily offended but this is not pornographic or hard edged nor is there profanity. Tales include a long folktale about an erotic witch who emasculates her lovers, the Cinderella/SM tinged story of an Carribe Indian princess and her pet Iguana, and the Grandmother of the title and her adventures running a rooming house for US soldiers during WWII and her battles with a fake Colonel Sanders and a self-styled crime king. Oh, and the grandmother invents Calypso radio as well! This is a great and unusal book.

What's Fun For Antoni, Is Not . . . .

Review Date: 2001-07-05
With none of the dignity and grace of BLESSED IS THE FRUIT (his second novel and one worthy of five stars), Antoni's long-awaited third book comes as a bit of a surprise and a disappointment. There is a certain escapism factor in MY GRANDMOTHER'S EROTIC FOLKTALES that doesn't so much offer readers an escape as it does illustrate the great need Antoni seems to have for one. It is easy to imagine the author closing himself into his writing room and writing away manically, blending his memories of West Indian life with a bizarre seasoning of childish and somewhat silly tales of sex. There is nothing erotic about MY GRANDMOTHER'S EROTIC FOLKTALES. They are more humorous than sensual, more burlesque than art, and more farcical than real. But then, that is often the case with folktales. The misleading part in Antoni's book is the word EROTIC.

As usual, Antoni's strength is dialect - perfectly rendered. One can imagine the 96-year-old woman telling her ribald tales. We can hear her accent and her laughter. We can see the grin on her old, wrinkled face. There is certainly an element of reality in this book and the tales play out on the page the way they might on a stage. Indeed, it is easy to imagine a musical adaptation of Antoni's latest work.

There is some interesting and shrewd political commentary going on under the surface of these tales as well and that - along with Antoni's style - save the book. The question is: will Antoni fans forgive him for having fun or will they be insulted at this indulgence of his while yearning for another masterpiece like BLESSED IS THE FRUIT?

Don't be fooled by the title. It's not raunchy. It's sensual. Two different things. This is a brilliant mix of storytelling, colors, smells, palm trees and imagination! The grandmother narrator...she's just wild! I loved her character. She wasn't some little polite old lady. She's loud, in your face, very sexually in tuned, funny, honest (sometimes), and witty. This is a really cool book and I'm glad I had the privilege to read this wonderful book.

Great collection of true ghost stories

Review Date: 2007-08-07
It's midnight and you're all alone. Outside your window you see a cloud shading the bright moon. The land once graced by the moon's light, is now shrouded in darkness. A mysterious fog rolls into area around your house. An eerie chill soars up and down your spine and you know something is not right. Then the silence of the night is broken by the howling of a wolf and from the fog emerges a figure dressed in a dark cloak. Your heart thumps rampantly and a blood-curdling scream echoes into the air as the figure reveals its deathly white face and a scythe with blood dripping from the blade.
Ghosts, Spooks, and Spirits of South Texas by Carol Riley Cain, is a short collection of true accounts of ghostly and other paranormal activity experienced by people living in South Texas. The author also gives her own personal accounts of encounters with the spiritual world.
It's been quite a while since I read a collection of true ghost stories and I looked forward to reading this book, as Texas is considered a paranormal hotbed. Being an avid fan of everything that goes "bump in the night", I found Cain's book quite enjoyable to read. There were some truly chilling tales and Mrs. Cain told them in a unique style similar to Stephen King's earlier works. One story in particular struck an unnerving chord with me and when you read it, an eerie, tingling sensation crawls all over your body. The story is as follows: three boys, Reggie, Sam and Bill, are dared by other college students to go to an abandoned airplane hangar to take numerous pictures inside of it. Unfortunately for the boys, they get more than what they bargained for. As Sam and Reggie go up a ladder to the first floor, they hear a boy laughing and crying and decide to investigate further. What they found will haunt them forever. Here's the description by the author of the events that followed, "They saw a boy about 12 years old, hunched down in a corner, crying one minute and laughing the next, and cutting his wrists with a piece of glass. Their instant reaction was to stop the boy but both realised at the same time that they could see through him!" The spectre looked up and when he saw the two boys, he screeched at them and followed the trio as they fled from the haunted place. Truly terrifying stuff! There are other spine chilling tales like this one and after reading them, it would be quite arduous to sleep with the light off. The book's only flaw is its actual length, 111 pages in total. It's a bit too short for this genre with most books ranging from 150 pages to 200. But with this aside, Carol Cain's short collection is a great read.
Overall, Ghosts, Spooks and Spirits of South Texas, is a fascinating book and will grip you from start to finish. If true stories of the otherworldly kind are your thing, then you'll love this!

What a wonderfully written, captivating set of tales!!! Each one leaps from the pages and immediately fills the mind with most intriguing thoughts. This book is a great companion year round. However, as Halloween is approaching it makes an especially grand gift for yourself and others who enjoy a good tale.

Outdated Info

Review Date: 2001-07-15
As a resident of Corpus, I thought this book would be great to have on hand for out-of-town visitors. However, after just a brief run-through, I noticed several things were out of date. This book was published this year, but lists some places (restaurants, movie theaters, and stores) that have been closed for a year or more. I know they had access to accurate and up-to-date information because they also list new places that have opened in the past year, long after some of the other places they listed closed. What happened?

Appears to be a great book, we'll know for sure in May!

I'll be visiting Corpus Christi for the first time in May, and if I like it, will be moving there within the next couple of years. I've never wanted to move cross-country on a whim before, but the way this book describes the Coastal Bend area, it makes me want to! It provides information that you wouldn't normally find in a travel guide, everyday info that the normal tourist wouldn't care about (lists of radio stations, television channels, describes the library systems, newspapers, weekly & monthly magazines, etc.), though someone who is relocating would. It would appear, to my un-schooled eye, to be about as complete as it could get.

The play of a true Christian

Though unconventional and challenging, this play is the work of a true Christan: that is, of a person who's understood the meaning of Jesus Christ teaching of Love and Charity. Christ came for all of us, Christ is Love, and all Love is blessed in Him . Christ-and God- doesn't hate anyone, not even racist anti-gay bigots, for whoie souls He also prays-together with the blessed Matthew Shephard.

not for everyone but interesting nonetheless

I did not purchase this play without expecting to be shocked. I found some parts of it to be extremely irreverent and downright blasphemous although I've always found the relationship between Judas and Jesus as depicted in straightforward (no pun intended) accounts of the passion play as having some subtext going on. Even in Jesus Christ Superstar, there seems to be a thread of jealousy on Judas's part that Jesus is spending more time with Mary Magdalene than the apostles. Of course, if as some scholars suggest, Jesus and Mary Magdalene were actually married, this would make Judas the third leg in an unrequited love triangle. What McNally has done has made (in the words of Joss Whedon) "the subtext rapidly text." If you can ignore the homosexual content (both implicit and explicit), the story still comes across and there is a sense of spirituality that pervades the text of the play. I would like to have seen the original New York production, just to say I saw it. McNally makes no attempt to disguise the homoeroticism between characters and has the all-male cast play both male and female roles throughout (with the exception of the actors playing Judas and Joshua/Jesus). Don't forget that even in Shakespeare's time, it was forbidden for women to act onstage so all of Shakespeare's heroines were originally played by men. Another interesting sidenote is how many actors in the original NY cast (Anson Mount played Joshua, Josh Lucas played Judas, Michael Hall of Six Feet Under and Ken Leung were apostles), have gone on to bigger and better things. Obviously no one is holding having performed in this play against them. It bothers me that some individuals have written a review of this play without having either seen a production of it or took the time to read the play itself. One thing I've find useful is to keep an open mind. Don't dwell on the gayness of the play. The humanity of Joshua/Jesus and his disciples is what comes through in the long run.

All I wanna say is that sooner or later you will all find out that homosexuality was NEVER ok with God. It is just as contrary to God's plan as adultery or any other grievous sin. And like always the author of anything that tells you otherwise is.. satan and his crowd. Goodness people why is it so hard to understand...

I agree with Grant Henson. Homosexuality was never ok with God. It was one of the reasons Sodom and Gommorah were destroyed in the first place. Destroyed with what? Raining sulphur. Some would call it fire. That's exactly how serious it is with God.
And to answer Brad Casali - Jesus IS sinless. Are you a Christian in the first place? You might say that it's unjust of me to ask this question. But believe me, it's important. Cuz you're hideously misquoting Scripture. And Mary Magdelene WAS NOT married to Jesus. That's downright questioning the authority and authenticity of Jesus.
Jesus was not created in the likeness and image of man. That would mean that He actually came into the world by the union of man and woman. Which is not true. Which you would know if you read the Bible (maybe i should quote you "Read the book you moron". Pardon the crude usage of words). Ask yourself why Mary needed to conceive through the Holy Spirit in the first place. So that no union would be made between man and woman, in which the seed of sin is passed down. Mary was only acting as a medium through which Christ came to earth. He's been in the world since it began, since He created it in the first place, which means before man was created. So how can He be created in the likeness of man?!
You must be quoting John 20 by saying Mary was the first to visit the tomb. Well, note John 20:2 and Luke 24:1. Mary was with the WOMEN. She wasn't alone. So Jesus is practising polygamy now? I'd encourage you to read those verses, that is, if your Bible isn't already collecting dust somewhere.
Just to make an impact: How would YOU feel if someone wrote a play depicting YOU as a homosexual or a play with pornographic elements with you in it?
Rotten?
Angry?
Feel like calling us Bible bangers now?
Would you like it if those who cared about you got angry about it and someone else who doesn't know you that well said: "It's a book, you morons. Read it because it has nothing to do with the real world."?

But back to the play.

In short, it's silly and totally un-Scriptural and it definitely serves it right for not being made into a movie.

Have just seen the play

I would like to start by saying I have not read this but I have just seen the play performed during the Edinburgh Festival.

This is not a shocking play it is a tender and moving depiction of the bible. Jesus/Joshua is shown to love all, Man and Woman, he is shown as a guiding force and one who is respected by his friends. Jesus is shown in the way that he should be shown as one who forgives and accepts that people are different, he is never shown as being only gay just a man who can love and accept all(correct me if I am wrong not having read the text)

This is not a play that should be shunned by the church it is one that should be embraced by it as it stands up for the true Christian meaning, we should love and respect ALL and most importantly forgive.

I only wish that some of the people who react badly to this play would atleast read or go and see it . It is then and ONLY then that I will listen to anything they have to say about it. A review can not and should not be given unless the author of that review has knowledge of what he/she is writing.

So in short if you want to see a well crafted take on "The greatest story ever told" go and see this play.

If you want to be shocked by a gay Jesus this is not the play for you.
