This is a wonderful piece of fiction that was written when I was a child. Yet it is so relative to today's children of military families with so many parents deployed. I find my young students can relate to this family in the book and find solace that others go through the same thing they do. Even for those that do not have the military experience, it is a beautiful story. It is a timeless work and I agree with one reviewer that it puts to shame any other book by the same title.

This is a delightful book to be read to children to let them know what Christmas without father was like during the early 1950s. The illustrations are very warm and homely. It puts to shame that other book with the same title. Highly recommended!

Many raves have been accorded to Bob Inman's previous novels. "The Christmas Bus" will endear him to yougsters as well as adults.

Lyle Baskin's full color artwork wonderfully illustrates novelist, playwright and screenwriter Robert Inman's engaging and entertaining story in "The Christmas Bus". Set at the Peaceful Valley Orphanage, this is the picturebook Christmas tale of Mrs. Frump who is trying to find good homes for the holiday for her gaggle of rowdy kids. But when the local busybodies and a suspicious Sheriff Snodgrass intervene, a simple bus ride turns into a terrifically involved and complicated adventure for this band of orphans! Original, heartwarming, and a truly welcome addition to the growing library of Christmas oriented titles, "The Christmas Bus" is an enthusiastically recommended addition to family, school, and community library holiday season collections and reading lists.

VALUE THE GIFT

Review Date: 1998-10-15
A few days before Christmas nine-year-old Marcel and his family are driving to their new house--an old farm deep in the snowy woods, then get lost. Luckily they find an old hotel which at first seemed to be closed. Marcel is fascinated by their quaint but kindly host, Pappy, who promises to provide them with directions to their destination the next day.

But the man mysteriously disappears, leaving them only an unsigned, unaddressed Christmas card, which has no words--just a curious sketch of the woods. Marcel gradually realizes that this card is a kind of map to their new home, yet it is much more than that. It is a Magic card, which changes to reflect conditions of the real world outside--of time, light and location.

Still Marcel experiences alternating fear and peace in the days preceding the Christian holiday, as a result of the card's shifting hints. The family of four is confused by the mysterious fire glowing in the old cabin; did they just stumble upon a meeting and inadvertantly drive the people away? Secular and sacred connotations combine to make a fascinating, enjoy-in-one-sitting read. Will Marcel ever see his beloved Pappy again--just who and what is he anyway? A literary chiaroscuro where the Light combats the Darkness and a young boy tries to choose the right path and make the best "trade."

My introduction to Paul Theroux

Many years ago on a trip to England I found the Penguin / Puffin version of A Christmas Card in a bookstore and bought it for my children, who were living in Denmark and visiting their grandparents in Maine every other summer. They don't seem to remember the story, but I read it to classes every year at Christmas as a high school English teacher in Denmark and my students loved it as much as I did after they got over the fact that Teacher was reading to them, just like in grade school.

It was my introduction to the wonderful world of Paul Theroux. I've since read many (but not all) of his books. I didn't enjoy the more recent novels, but I particularly loved A Kingdom By The Sea, as I, too, have enjoyed walking in England.

This is a magical story - about magic and imagination and light and life, which is what Theroux always writes about. Get a copy for your children or grandchildren, but be sure to read it out loud to them, one chapter a day, to spread out the suspense!

Very Nice Arrangements of Christmas Music for the Mandolin

I bought a few of the Christmas Music for Mandolin books here at amazon. This is the only one that I felt was very helpful. The others mainly provide the melody line and chords, which I can get from a bazillion other Christmas collection books. This one provided some very nice arrangements for the mandolin, using double stops, tremelos, etc. I played one of the arrangements in church this morning and they loved it.

great book in the series

I've always liked cats and dogs and it was great to read about these girls rescuing the cats and dogs from the shelter before christmas eve to keep them from being put to sleep. They raised a lot of money for that, and Melanie ended up getting her favourite dog from there for Christmas, who soon gave birth to puppies. The plot would have also been a very good plot for that Baby Sitters Club or Little Sister series, that is probably why I loved this book so much though I'm not really a fan of Fabulous Five.

"Can Melanie Make A Christmas Miracle Happen?"

Review Date: 2002-08-10
The Fabulous Five, along with some extra help from their friends, hope to raise $375 in the next two weeks, before Christmas Eve, when 15 older cats and dogs will be euthanized, because there's not enough room at the local animal shelter for them. But will Melanie Edwards and her friends raise enough money in time? And if so, can they find homes for all of the cats and dogs? Because, otherwise, the shelter won't allow the animals to be released.

I liked the moral of this story since I love animals and have rescued a few from the pound. Other young readers (9 - 12) will probably enjoy "The Christmas Countdown" as well, especially if they're animal lovers. This is one of the better books in this series.

New Ideas for Christmas for Young and Old
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-01
This book contains many fabulous ideas for different crafts and decorations to do in preparation for Christmas, and all can be done with children. What I loved most about this book was that all the crafts are beautiful and sophisticated (no construction paper chains here!), with detailed instructions and designs. The projects included are candles, calendars, wreaths and table decorations, lanterns, angels, transparencies, straw stars, transparent stars, Christmas stables, and geometric figures. There is something for every interest. I would say that all the projects would require adult supervision, and probably from 3rd to 4th grade up to adult. A small book, but a treasure book of ideas.

A beautiful depiction of Jesus' early life.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-16
"The Christmas Dove" is a beautiful and compelling depiction of the early experiences of Jesus and His earthly family. The reader gets a sense of what life was like 2000 years ago, and also gets a glimpse into the thoughts and feelings of Jesus' parents, who slowly begin to realize that their beloved little boy is far more than He seems. This book personalized Jesus' early life for me, and helped fill in the gaps between the Biblical accounts of His birth and later events. God's hand was upon Carol Watson when she wrote this book!

"The Christmas Dove" is appropriate for all ages; each short chapter would make a nice bedtime story for small children, and it would not lose its appeal to the oldest reader.

Bill Crump has written a very informative book about the Christmas traditions that answer many questions about the season that many of us have had. I especially liked the customs and traditions of the holiday seasons from the other countries, as I'm sure many other people will who are researching family histories. Way to go Dr. Bill.
