Arirang: The Bamboo Connection
Arirang The Bamboo Connection

AUTHOR: D. K. Christi¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬
Melani, a young American wife and mother working in Korea, is the picture of the proper image; faithful, dutiful wife, loving, attentive mother and hard-working, dedicated teacher. She has a "friend" on the side, Dale, whom she spends her time with due to the lack of interest and communication on the part of her husband. But then she meets Jack, a handsome officer on temporary duty. What ensues with them is a flirtation with trouble, as they begin to sneak around to meet each other and spend time together behind closed doors. If word got out, she could jeopardize everything she has, her job, her child, her husband, even her household help. Should she stop because of those reasons or continue with it because her husband has his share of company as well? What happens when Jack's time there is finished?
Wow, some women have all the luck! A beautiful son, an interesting job, a husband, a "friend" to spend time with when your own husband doesn't give you the attentiveness you need and another man who makes you feel what you've long ago forgotten. Being an enthusiastic reader, I can really appreciate the effort this author put forth in writing this book, from the plot, to the descriptions, to the over all feeling of the story. When an author puts in this kind of effort, it makes it easier to get into a book such as this one. Since I also have a very active imagination, the descriptions of scenery and locale really helped me visualize the idea the author is going for. I also appreciated the effort put into the technical research, like describing the various cultures, history and mannerisms that are encountered throughout the character's lives. Though it's long, this is a book I'd read more than once, just because the descriptions allow my imagination to run away, taking me with it.

I give this book a very enthusiastic 5!

An Adventure

It is a book of adventure. The reader will learn much about foreign living and travel to a variety of locations. The reader will also sail the seas enjoying the high life with all the hazards of sailing. The frustrations of life and survival play a large role in D.K. Christi's book. It includes romantic encounters with the agony and ecstasy of love given, received and lost. The book gives a down to earth look at life's struggle and the plight of people to survive in the land of plenty.

Wow, what a book!

Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for Reader Views (1/07)

Jack has the bluest eyes Melani has ever seen. There is something special between them when their eyes meet. She met him at the tennis courts in Korea never suspecting their paths would cross again. Jack wanted them to meet again. Melani is married but her husband "spends his business evenings in the Kiesing houses, arriving home too drunk to miss me. Like Cinderella, the ball has come to an end."

Jack mesmerizes Melani. "He has impressed on me that our whole existence is based on our relationship together at that moment in time. The rest of the world is another place, not allowed to intrude on our feelings for each other. Nor do our feelings need to affect anyone else."

This is the life story of a young girl, from childhood through her "senior" years. Melani's life is an adventure. She travels from America, to Korea, the British Isles, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. Her marriage to Derek began like most with dreams and ideals but it ended with affairs and divorce.

Another marriage ends in rage and abuse. "When he was good he was very, very good but when he was bad he was horrible." Melani and her son Brian were on their own again "with an ocean of tears behind us." Jack will always remain her soul mate.

This is a book of tears, joy, adventure, pain, love, duplicity and grief. Melani is a woman of great character and intellect. She is strong but doesn't always realize it. This book is a window into her soul.

D.K. Christi is a tremendously talented author. She writes "Arirang: The Bamboo Connection" from the first person perspective, giving readers the sense of being Melani. She offers great insight on the personality of her main character. Despite character flaws I could not help but love Melani. She shows strength that one would not expect; a strength that grows with each page. I could have been easily convinced that this was not fiction but based on a true story if I had not already read otherwise. The cover of this book teases the reader to delve inside. This book is of epic proportions. I truly enjoyed reading it.

ARIRANG, an incredible story of a young girl's journey through life from childhood to the "golden years." It is filled with adventure, betrayal, love, joy and sorrow. As you witness Melanie's life as seen through her prospective, Melanie will soon live in your heart from the beginning of the very first page through the last. She is a person of great intelligence, integrity, passion, depth of character and "true grit" that the author has an uncanny ability to reveal to the reader. This is not just a book traversing seven continents, but a book that takes you into the depths of Melanie's psyche allowing the reader to identify and feel her pain and her joy. The reader will experience the terror of surviving life-threatening seas to the frustrations of performing daily tasks while Melanie and her husband sail their sixty-seven foot sailboat from Miami to Venezuela. It is my hope that D.K. Christi will write many more books. This one, I could not put down. Melanie remains in my heart.

This book's gilt-edged pages, charming colorful illustrations and classic Christmas treats including among many, O. Henry's "Gift of the Magi" and the nostalgic holiday song, "Over the River and Through the Woods" make for merry family holiday pleasure. Splendid! This book is called a treasury for good reason.

What a beautiful book - and a great gift idea! I saw this at the bookstore a few weeks ago and loved it. I ordered it as a gift for a friend out of state off of amazon.com and was pleasantly surprised when 2nd day air and the book came to less than the cost of the book at the bookstore. Add this book to your Christmas collection!

Great Christmas Book

Review Date: 2007-01-18
This is a great christmas book and not only am I not from Chicago, I'm not even from the USA. Doesn't matter.

This book is filled with great pictures of christmas displays throughout Chicago and no matter where you live, if you like to look at christmas displays, you should like this book.

Each display gives you some information about that particular display, not just directions but sometimes history, personal feelings/descriptions, reasons why the person/people used what they used, etc........ A real nice christmas mood book.

It would have been nice to have larger pictures, though, so as to really capture the full beauty of the displays, but don't worry about that as it's only minor. The pictures are still big enough to enjoy and the writing/descriptions with each picture add a really nice 'christmas' touch to this most recommended book.

Oh, and on a plus side (despite the small, but not too small pictures), there are a ton of pictures so you will really get a visual, eye-candy, christmas treat with this book.

100% recommeded for those who like christmas displays/christmas images.

Great Book!

Some of my fondest memories are of driving around with my parents, and later with my children, to wonder at the displays of those few festive folks that help make Christmas more joyous for us all. My mother and father drove us to the two streets in our small town where people bothered to sparkle as a community in tribute to the birth of love. In Chicago, those communities are in abundance....but who would ever know...unless somebody told them. In her book Mary Edsey tells everybody . She shows them, too. She seems to know everything about Christmas lights in Chicago...the history, the story behind the families that make the displays, the whereabouts, the types of bulbs and figurines used. And she shows us everything in detailed photos. It's like looking at a family album. Plus...She has maps to every display! It's great table entertainment as well as a wonderful guide. I highly recommend this book to any lover of Christmas and the lights that come with it!

This book has it all! It has precise directions and maps that make it easy to find the most spectacular holiday displays; it has fascinating stories about the decorators; and it even has helpful hints on decorating your own home for Christmas. The photographs are beautiful--they really inspire the yuletide spirit! This book helped my family experience a delightful holiday adventure--my kids are still talking about it! I think we've created a new Christmastime tradition with the help of Ms. Edsey''s glorious book!

Perhaps one of the fondest memories of any Chicago childhood is the Christmas lights. We love our decorations, and in some parts of the city, we go all out, turning our homes into little "winter wonderlands" for our own pleasure and that of our friends, neighbors, and often carloads of strangers who cruise the more decorated neighborhoods. That's why I snarfed up this book as soon as I knew it existed, and for the most part, I wasn't disappointed. Edsey covers a lot of the best areas for decorations, gives some historical background, and displays a real love for her subject, which strikes a responsive chord in me. However, I was disappointed in the photography which was a bit fuzzy and rather darker than I would have liked. Now, granted, all this has to be shot in the dark for maximum effect, but holiday magazines manage to make their photographs crisp and clear, with little loss of architectural detail. And I know it's not about the architecture, but that always will inform the way the decorations appear to onlookers. To lose those details is to lose some of what makes the lights and decorations so appealing.

However, nothing else like this exists, and I have to give high marks to this volume if only on that count. It's way better than nothing! So if you're a Christmas junkie and a Chicago lover, then by all means, buy this book, and enjoy.

This uplifting book provides numerous photographs of creatively-decorated properties. Of course, this was now 12 or more Christmases ago. The decorations are secular and religious, and traditional as well as non-traditional. For example, some have tropical motifs.

A very helpful feature of this book is the division of the Chicago area into areas, each of which has a map that locates every photographed property. The homes are indexed by name. One of the best-known decorated properties occurs in the Sauganash community on the north side of Chicago.

I just read this book for the second time, something I do fairly rarely, so it says a lot. I really love it, it's so charming and heartwarming. Weezie is a character that the author has in a few other of her books and I've really enjoyed them, as well (Savannah Blues - outstanding, and Savannah Breeze - pretty good). I would highly recommend this if you're looking for something cozy to cuddle up with. I will say that it has more 'meat' in the story than some of those Christmas book novellas that are out there, and for that, I am grateful.

Mary Kay Andrews is one of my favorite authors. I had purchased this book when it was first released last year, but waited to read it over the holidays and am I glad I did!!! I just LOVE her main character Weezie (from Savannah Blues) and am so glad she brought her back in this book. I love antiquing also, so to read about her adventures on her "junking" travels is such fun! An unexpected twist in the book was a pleasant surprise and so well done!!! I can't wait to read Deep Dish - hurry and write another one Mary Kay - your books are fabulous and can't come quick enough.

"Can This Be Christmas" is a short, nevertheless touching story which will hopefully become a classic must-read for all. Twenty-four hours is such a short period of time unless your plans have suddenly been drastically changed and you have no control over them. The cast of characters learn quickly that the Christmas spirit is alive and well in each of them. That spirit does present itself once a "child" shows them the way. Even the most hard hearted will get a little teary-eyed with this quaint tale.

Wonderful story no matter what time of year.

Revenge is sweet... or is it? December 28, 2002

Eight years ago, Max, then Viscount Evendon, was engaged to Judith Blakeford. But, with a month to go until the wedding, she eloped with Andrew Easton. Judith found her fiancé cold and forbidding, whereas Andrew tempted her with romance and passion. Yet marriage disillusions her: her husband is a drunken debaucher who spends most of his time away from her and their children, engaging in seduction.

Eight years later, Judith, now widowed, returns to London, and encounters her former fiancé once more. Max, now the Marquess of Denbigh, has nursed a desire for vengeance for the entire eight years since she ran off, leaving her father to break the news that he'd been jilted. His once-time love for Judith has turned to hatred, and he wants revenge.

Max ensures that his and Judith's paths cross as frequently as possible, doing his best to charm his way into her children's good graces and those of her sister-in-law, Amy - that seems to be the easiest way to get Judith to spend time with him. When he succeeds in getting her to accept his invitation to spend Christmas at his estate he knows that his plan is succeeding. All he needs to do is to make her fall in love with him, the way he once loved her, and then abandon her, just as she once abandoned him. Then his revenge will be complete.

But this is Christmas, a time for love and peace and forgiveness, not a time for darkness and hatred. Can Max really sustain his desire for vengeance in the face of the woman he still loves? Can Judith overcome the memory of her fear of Denbigh and her guilt for what she once did to him - and her conviction that he means only to hurt her? Can these two people ever learn to trust one another?

This is a lovely book, and one of Balogh's better Christmas novels, a period she does so well. Its theme is very seasonal, with love, forgiveness and hope at the core of the book, and a cast of supporting characters who are alone and in need of love. There is also a very sweet secondary romance featuring two characters both of whom thought themselves never likely to fall in love or marry. The book is very hard to find, but well worth it!

Max, Lord Denbeigh, decides to put a revenge plot into motion when Judith, the fiancee who threw him over eight years ago, is widowed, and appears in London for Christmas. But his old feelings for her keep intruding on his wish for revenge.

The hero & heroine are perfectly drawn; the setting is romantic & the tension between the two is palpable; the hero's crisis of conscience is very believable. Just a wonderful keeper & highly, highly recommended.

One of Balogh's best. Lovely story with believable characters, believable problems, and best of all touchingly believable conclusion.

Eight years previously Judith Easton had jilted the Marquess of Denbigh to elope with another man. Now recently widowed she returns to London, and into the sights of the waiting Marquess. Max has had eight years to plan his subtle revenge. He will worm his way into her heart; shower her with affection and warmth. Then, when she least expects it, he will abandon her without a word. It is a good plan, a perfect plan, but as Max slowly discovers it is very hard to hurt the woman that still holds his heart.

A Stunning Conclusion. - ** Overall Grade: A- **

Sometimes an author's words have such a profound affect their meaning is felt deep inside. For this unwavering reader, Mary Balogh's words usually have this penetrating influence. Mary Balogh is a stunning writer and the last forty pages of Balogh's CHRISTMAS BEAU are simply magnificent.

Judith Easton was once betrothed to the Viscount Evendon; however, she foolishly eloped with another man. Eight years have gone by. Now the viscount is the Marquess of Denbigh and now he is able to seek his hard-core revenge against Judith -- the woman he once cherished and loved. Yes, for eight LONG years, the marquess has planned his vengeance.

Judith Easton is in London with her two small children. Judith is now a widow and is trying desperately to escape the nightmare that was her marriage. The Marquess of Denbigh is in London also and his plans for Judith's punishment are moving forward. What the marquess does not understand: his avenging mind seeks retaliation, but his foolish heart seeks love.

Mary Balogh allows her reader to journey to the English countryside to enjoy the fun of a Regency Christmas. She gives her reader the experiences, the traditions, and the customs of Christmases past. So effective are her words that the reader CAN see visions of sugar plums dancing . . . such colorful written words . . . and then . . . Balogh unfolds her heart twisting pen.

CHRISTMAS BEAU is another Signet Regency classic from the Balogh writing desk. Although not a phenomenal read, it is still a splendid read. What happened? Perhaps the Christmas party went on a little too long before Balogh's poignant pen, once again, stirred the pages, and it is this poignant pen that is Mary Balogh's strong suit.

With a release date of December 1991, this book is no longer published and is very hard to find. Check the secondary markets and be prepared to pay, but do get a copy, for CHRISTMAS BEAU is still a wonderfully written story. Grade: A-

This volume assuredly would be a welcome addition to the libary of anyone who loves Charles Dickens and/or the history of film. The style of writing is quite engaging, yet it does not descend into sentimentality or nostalgia.

The opening chapters, which provide a relatively brief yet surprisingly insightful treatment of Dickens' Christmas writings and social conscience, are a concise picture of the setting in which Dickens brought his classic to life. For those unfamiliar with the period, I would find this to be an essential background, lest A Christmas Carol be reduced to a fairy tale, as it is in certain film treatments. Those who are acquainted with these matters undoubtedly would find the quotations from Dickens' more obscure Christmas writings, and references to such other Christmas scenes as those in The Pickwick Papers, to form a comprehensive image of the combination of commentary and imagination in these works, and underlying themes which influenced a Christmas Carol itself.

The treatment of film adaptations, including the earliest silents, is extremely well researched and comprehensive. Even the biggest fan of "Scrooge pictures" would find some in this collection which were unknown. The classic films (for example, Alastair Sims' version) are analysed with an insightfulness that would increase anyone's understanding and enjoyment of their content.

As a Dickens lover, and also as one who is a "Christmas nut" (for whom the insights in this volume were a welcome and lovely nutcracker), I would highly recommend this book on all counts.

Very Well Done

Dickens dose a great job introducing this book. He has very high vocabulary and his words are sometimes very confusing. However, that should not cloud over the book because it is a great read. In my opinion it is a must read. I think if any Christmas hater reads this book they will love it. It certainly was interesting.

I've been a fan of the 1953 version of a the Carol for as long as I remember. It was family tradition every Christmas eve to watch it. I've looked at as many possible versions and have yet to find it's match. This book is an amazing resource of all the various interpretations of the Dicken's classic has gone through from early lantern projected pictures, through the silent era, talking films, television, and animated specials. The early version were fascinating and I found it a special bonus that the author made note of various television shows which featured a special Christmas episode inspired by A Christmas Carol. Who could ever forget the "Six Million Dollar Man" Christmas special using the ideas from the novel. This brought back a lot of great television special memories. I was even able to track down two hard to find T.V. animated specials shown in the early 1970's but not seen since. (I found them on Amazon). All in all a great read, especially for fans. I did not agree with all of the criticisms, and the text is a rather dry read, maybe a little too academic. But still great stuff!!

Everyone has a favorite film or television version of Dickens beloved "A Christmas Carol." But few of us have any idea how very many adaptations there have been. Mr. Guida's wonderful book examines first the written "Carol," then goes on to detail some of the hundreds of adaptations and variations, from the early stage versions and magic lantern slides to modern made-for-television Carols. Mr. Guida discusses the major Carols with wit and humor as well as rare discernment: his love for his subject is evident. Minor Carols and variations are also covered, albeit more briefly. If you cannot find your favorite version in the text, you are sure to find it in the superb and very thorough filmography. The filmography is worth browsing in and of itself; did you know that there have been Western, country-western, rock-and-roll, and even science-fiction variations on "A Christmas Carol"? Or that actors as disparate as Cicely Tyson, Basil Rathbone, and Mr. Magoo have played Scrooge? If you love "A Christmas Carol" or simply dote on film trivia, I promise you will enjoy this book.

Francisco Jimenez weaves a beautiful story of a very poor, almost destitute, migrant family and their son Panchito. Panchito learns that even though he will not be getting what he most wants for Christmas, he learns the true "gift" of Christmas is having his family and their williness to sacrifice for a better life. A story for all ages and ethnicties to enjoy and savor one of the true meanings of Christmas. ..Oh, and it takes place in my own hometown which made it all the more endearing..

Wow! Francisco Jiménez hits a HOME RUN again

This is yet another powerful children's book by Francisco Jiménez. His books, based upon his own experiences as a child of migrant farmworkers, are consistently both beautiful and instructive, heart-rending and joyous. For the vast majority of Americans who don't think about the lives of the people pick and process the food we eat, this book is a gentle, but strong reminder of the continued existance of poverty in our nation.

Many Christmas books talk about wonderous gifts and fantasy that is often too commercial. This wonderful story will help children find the true meaning behind Christmas, and see that everybody does not experience Christmas in the same manner, or get every thing they want.

I actually found this book in a barber shop. The illustrations got the attention of my 2 year old. What a find! Every parent regardless of the age of their children should read this book at bed time. It had the attention of my four children, ages 2 to 10. I actually felt like I was reading my parents, and grandparents Christmas story. I was lucky enough to not have to live my life through rough times like this. I was able to have the education that my parents and grandparents worked so hard for, but only could dream of. This story helped me remember and appreciate all they had to endure. What a story it brought me back to my roots. Only warning I have for future readers... have tissues close at hand!

A beautiful and moving story.

A true story from the author's childhood, this is a beautiful and moving tale told simply in both English and Spanish. My wife and I were both dabbing our eyes with handkerchiefs by the time we finished reading. The illustrations are very well done and enhance the message of the book. Highly recommended as an antidote to the typical materialist emphasis of Christmas.

A Christmas Guest by David LaRochelle has been our family's alltime favorite Christmas story. The story about a small boy and his mother entertaining an angel unaware is timelessly beautiful and in keeping with the true Christmas spirit. This treasure of a book is now out of print and I would love it if everybody would write to the publishers, Lerner Books Publishing, Carolrhoda books...and ask them to reprint it so that everyone can have a copy of this fine book. The pictures are poignantly lovely and the book is in rhyme. It is a great book to read to small children right before bed as it is easily read in ten minutes. It is also a great book to read to adults!
