It's refreshing to have poignant Christian fiction written by a man. The two main characters in this story are also men. Most Christian fiction seems to be aimed at women, unfortunately, so this was freshing. Another reviewer mentioned that he was going to purchase copies of this book for high school graduation gifts, and I think that's an excellent idea!
The story begins when almost 20-year-old Alan reluctantly agrees to spend a week caring for his dying grandfather in a small town in the mountains of Montana. There has been some distance between Alan's father and his grandfather, and during Alan's stay, he learns the reasons for this through a series of 8 stories his grandfather has written, to go along with 8 gifts that are under the tree. Grandpa has told Alan he can choose one as his Christmas gift.
Maki's depiction of these characters is outstanding. You really know these characters. It's wonderful to see the young man in the story grow in compassion through this book. Their relationship is precious. This book isn't predictable or sugar-sweet. It's just perfect and I highly recommend it. Don't wait til next Christmas - read it now - and while you're at it, get in some early Christmas shopping and buy a few copies for friends and family!

Six stars for being extraordinary, please?Review Date: 2007-11-01
Based on a true story that's told after the novel's ending, Janet Elaine Smith offers a Christmas romance that manages to be sweet without ever becoming saccharine. Trust me on this: I hate "sweet" romances that have nothing else to offer, and I hate them with a passion. This book, though, I couldn't put down. I read it in an evening, and was sorry when it ended because I'd have loved to remain immersed in its magic for another hour or two. A Christmas Dream has the potential to become a holiday classic like Dickens's A Christmas Carol. So help me, it really is that good!

A Christmas Dream Come TrueReview Date: 2004-12-12
"A Christmas Dream" is full of warm memories. It is about a young widow with a three-year old son, who must face the world alone after the tragic death of her husband in a desert storm. Uncertainties loom.
Ms. Smith's characters in Susan Quincey, Jeremy her son, Kevin Dockter, and Kevin's mother, are so real; it's not difficult to relate to them one way or another. This book is easy reading. It gives a wonderful feeling in the end - perfect for the Christmas Season.
Miracles do happen! Janet Elaine Smith made it happen in this heart-warming book. If you believe in the powers of love, faith and kindness, I strongly suggest you go, rush out and get this book. Happy Christmas everyone! Thank you Janet Elaine Smith for sharing "A Christmas Dream."

This is a beautiful, warm Christmas story that proves miracles do happen and dreams really do come true.
This book should be made into a Hallmark Movie.
Hope and Dreams!!Review Date: 2005-10-24
Janet has truly given me a special gift as I am such a Christmas person, even though I believe that the spirit of giving should be all year round.
Her book has reaffirmed my belief that one should never give up hopes or dreams that one cherishes. And, considering all that has happened in 2005, never giving up is most definitely a major theme!
Read it, you will love it!

More Complicated than AdvertisedReview Date: 2008-07-16
However, the recipes in this book are more complicated than some other reviewers would have you believe, with multiple steps for most of the recipes (not including cookies). And although the book jacket promises that the recipes require only "ordinary equipment and supermarket ingredients," I have to disagree. The dessert pictured on the cover, for example, requires six new pieces of PVC pipes - now, who considers PVC pipes to be ordinary cooking equipment? Not me or my friends who bake (even the one who went to culinary school).
I found many of the tips contained in the Chef's Touch notes (included for each recipe) to be useful. The tips on storage and shipping for the recipes will be helpful as well.
I am not a fan of the author's writing style which was sometimes corny. He tried a little too hard to be funny or be low-key. For instance, in the notes for White Chocolate Kisses, the author writes "Notice the baking time is just 14 minutes, so you should avoid distractions like playing mouth music with your sweetie, and keep a close eye on your cookies as they bake." Who says "mouth music"?
I would have preferred to give the book 3.5 stars. Since that is not an option, I rounded up.

Enjoyable and quick readReview Date: 2007-04-30
This magical story is part Mrs. Doubtfire/Mary Poppins and part It's a Wonderful Life! I love books set in a faith-based community, and the reason Debbie Macomber is one of my favorite authors is that her style of writing immerses the reader into the setting, making the characters feel like friends and neighbors. The healing power of forgiveness is exemplified in this story. Delivered in a subtle and non-preachy manner, it's a valuable lesson everyone can reflect upon, at Christmas, during Lent, and throughout the year!
