An Amazing Story of Deliverance from Darkness

Dr. Sandra Clifton, a formerly well known TV psychic shares her spiritual journey in her new book "From New Age to New Life."
She writes from her own experiences and clearly shows the deception, nature, and thought behind New Age practices. She also
offers practical insights for sensitive ways to dialogue and pray for those entangled in New Age beliefs.
Sandra tells her story, relating the seeds of the gospel being planted by her grandfather, and the importance of Christian heritage in her spiritual journey. Devastated by a failed marriage, Sandra, alone in Los Angeles sought counseling from a professional therapist. One session opened the door to participating in lab experimentation in mind power or psychic abilities, ESP, talk shows, and a TV contract.
As Sandra delved deeper into the darkness of the occult and New Age phenomena she continued to find success, became recognized as a popular speaker at conference and conventions on the power and control that comes through using the power of the mind. On one occasion she had a Damascus Road experience as the Lord made known His claim on her life. This experience was followed by a lonely, hard, and important training program for Sandra and her husband Terry.
The book is designed to provide pastors and teachers with a deeper understanding, to provide all believers an evangelistic tool, specifically for addressing the needs of those ensnared in the occult/New Age movement.
I personally appreciated the various emphases within each chapter which provided me with opportunities for "Reflection," to consider "What Can Be Done," and to apply suggested prayer strategies. The final chapter accentuates the importance of intercessory prayer and provides suggested prayers for family members, spouses, friends, and other special needs.
The book provides material for the lay person in ministering to loved ones, friends, and associates involved in the occult/New Age. It provides help for pastors for counseling those with New Age and occult backgrounds. There is material within the book designed with questions for the church leader to use in study groups relating to postmodern relativism, occult and New Age. The book can be used by seminary students wanting to be equipped to minister to the needs of those influenced by New Age teaching.
Dr. Sandra Clifton writes with clarity as she calls the reader to action through a loving, listening outreach. Her writing is Biblical, informational and inspirational. "From New Age to New Life" is an important and timely book.

At one point, the church encouraged allegory and esoteric meaning in legends and scripture. This is a book that provides
keys to the secret meanings that were studied by the holy orders in medieval days. A fascinating read for all Graal (or Grail)

Who Says Mormons Don't Appreciate the Bible?

The Bible is the best-selling book ever written. One cannot hope to fathom the depths of literature without obtaining at
least a passing familiarity with the Bible. However, in what I believe to be a misguided attempt to expand the reach of the
book, it has been rewritten in a myriad of fashions in order to reach a "wider" audience; in forms as diverse as Hawaiian
slang, hip-hop, gender neutral, and just about any other form that mankind can dream up.
I for one am grateful to have been brought up with the good old King James version. The language of the King James has a gravitas that seems to this reviewer to be perfectly appropriate. The formality of King James' English adds to the power of the words--again personal opinion. I'm sure that the Revised Standard has the same power and hold upon a person introduced to the Bible through that translation. Mormons are big on the issue of translation--we are taught that the Bible is correct so far as it is translated correctly and our Church holds that the King James translation is preferred to other translations.
Well, among all the translations available, here's why you should try this version: This Bible was the result of years of diligent work by LDS scholars who succeeded in providing amazingly detailed and accessible internal translation aids for the archaic English, Hebrew, and Greek words, as well as cross-referencing, maps, pictures of the Holy Land, indices and a Bible Dictionary. You could spend a ton of money and not find an index or concordance as complete as the cross-references included in this volume. The references add tremendously to the ability to understand the work.
This Bible also has cross-references to the Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants and Pearl of Great Price, each of which are considered canonical by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka LDS Church or Mormon Church). These aid the reader in examining how these other books relate to and clarify Biblical teachings. Better yet, any Mormon missionary will jump at the chance to put this one in your hand.
Folks, save the arguments. Instead, if you appreciate the Bible and want to learn something about one of the few religious movements that continues to increase in numbers and influence, if you have an interest as to the relationship between the Book of Mormon and the Bible--this is an indispensable primary source. Indeed, many members of the LDS Church, including myself, carry four-in-one volumes that include all of the previously referenced "standard" works--the LDS Canon, if you will, of which the first book is the Bible. Why rely on others to give you your opinion? Check out the source documentation.
Try and see. These Bibles aren't hard to get. Regardless of the extent or nature of your religious persuasions--whether or not they encompass the Bible--you will be pleasantly surprised by the power and accessibility of this King James based version.

When the world was new and first being populated with animals, the birds were assigned their colors. Robin red breast wondered
why her breast was not red like her name. The angels told her she was a special bird who would have to earn the red color.
She thought about several ways to earn a red breast, but in any contest, she was either too small or the feat was too difficult
for a bird to ever win. One day she saw on a hill in the distance a man nailed to a wooden cross and suffering. She wanted
to help him, to take away some of the pain, but her eggs were about to open, so she stayed until they were all open and okay.
Then she flew to the man and pulled out thorns piercing his head and making it bleed. After she had done all she could do
to help him, she flew back to her nest. Her baby birds, surprizingly, all had red breasts! Then the angels and God appeared.
God told her she had unselfishly earned the red color for her babies and herself, and for all the robin red breasts forever
after.

Guardini cuts through the saturnine sentamentalism that surrounds the figure of Jesus and gives a serious examination of His
life, deeds, and personality. Each chapter is a meditation on a certain aspect of Jesus that contains great insight into
His inner life and highlights particular things that are often missed by those who read the Gospels. The reader will catch
a new glimpse at this mysterious figure as Guardini looks at Him from many angles in an attempt to grasp what this unique
man was all about. Read this book and you will realize how deep is Christ's love for the world, how Christ won victory through
failure, why he healed only some of the sick, and why children and the ill flocked to Him. A great introduction to the life
and personality of Jesus of Nazareth.

What a different perspective of biblical passages! As a Roman Catholic this was a terrific guide to understanding where
"self" belongs. As a Christian who gives time to many fine organizations, this books explains when you are truly ready to
give of "self". As a parent this book explains a remarkable healthy growth process that should happen in your children.
You will have to think while reading this book. A must have for all Christians who upon occasion examine their lives whether
those lives are "broken" or absolutely perfect.

A Prayer and Insight into the Gospel of Matthew

Review Date: 2000-04-19
Jesus the Meek King by Deirdre J. Good This book is an exegesis of two bible verses within their cultural contexts, an insight
into the Gospel of Matthew and a prayer. Let me explain. The premise of the book is that our appreciation of Scripture is
enhanced by understanding the context in which it was written by analysis of contemporaneously influential texts. We are
introduced to relevant classical Greek texts of Aristotle, Plato and Isocrates; Hellenistic texts of Plutarch, the Stoics,
Theophrastus, the Epistle of Aristeas and Pseudo-Pythagoreans; Jewish texts from the Pentateuch, Josephus, the Psalms, Zechariah,
4 Maccabees, Philo and the Dead Sea Scrolls; and the Christian texts of the Gospel of Thomas, Paul, Eusebius, the Desert
Fathers, First Clement, the Didache and the Epistle to Diognetus. Alone the breadth and variety of these references make
the book an intellectual and spiritual feast. Preparatory chapters educate the reader on the meaning of praus [meek] and
kingship in their Hellenistic context. Praotes (meekness) is a virtue and a warrant for control of others. We are shown
this in Philo's description of Moses and Aristotle's description of the virtue praus as being the mean between anger and
lack of spirit. Praus behavior is illuminated by examples from 4 Maccabees (the story of the 7 brothers and their mother),
Plutarch, Paul and the Epistle to Diognetus. With regard to Hellenistic kingship, we are introduced to sources for the concept
of ideal king and learn that praotes is a valued royal quality. In the letter of Aristeas, a praus king is compassionate
to the enemy; according to Theophrastus, the true king rules with the scepter and not the sword; according to 2 Maccabees,
the high priest Onias is envisioned by Judas Maccabeus as modest and praus. We also learn of ruler cults before and after
Alexander. With this background, we are prepared to study Matt 11:28-29: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am praus and lonely in heart, and you will find
rest for your souls. Deirdre argues that Matthew presents Jesus as a praus king who, in accordance with Hellenistic and
Jewish thinking, is God's son. While Sirach 51 at first blush appears to bear a striking resemblance to these verses, Deirdre
distinguishes the wisdom tradition in Sirach and argues that internal warrants describe Jesus as king and son and points
to an external warrant in 1 Maccabees that connects monarchy and servitude with specific yoke language evocative of Matt
11:28-29. In addition, 3 external warrants support Deirdre's thesis. They are the Greek version of Zechariah 9:9, quoted
in Matt 21:4-5; saying 90 of the Gospel of Thomas; and the Sibylline Oracles, which quote and elaborate on Matthew's quotation
from Zechariah. Deirdre shows multiple internal warrants for her thesis. The demeanor of other kings in the Gospel contrasts
with that of Jesus. The disproportionate rage of Herod is the antithesis of the meek Jesus.. While anger of kings in parables
seems justified (the king in the parable about settling accounts with his servants and the king in the parable of the wedding
feast), Jesus is never described as angry and Jesus expressly eschews anger. Jesus' compassion reflects the demeanor of
a praus king, Jesus' teachings advocate meekness and Jesus is worshiped in the manner of a praus Hellenistic ruler. Last,
Deirdre looks at the time when Matthew was written and also at the time the canon was formalized in the fourth century.
Prautes promotes community life, a probable concern of those establishing and wishing to sustain new communities in the first
and fourth centuries. External sources show the same focus, such as, 1 Clement, Ignatius writing to Polycarp, the sayings
of the desert fathers and mothers, the Shepherd of Hermas Mandates, Gregory of Nyssa, the Didacheand even The Rule of the
Community from the Dead Sea Scrolls. Not only does meekness promote community but meekness is powerful and opposes evil.
What appears to be self- effacement is a coded way of describing hidden strength. Deirdre illustrates this power of humility
in stories from the desert fathers and mothers and writings of Ignatius of Antioch. Thus, from Deirdre's culturally rich
exegesis of Matthew 11:28-29, we have traveled through the writings of the ancient world and the Gospel of Matthew and emerge
with a deeper understanding of Jesus, the obedient son of God. We are inspired to worship and to seek to emulate Jesus,
the meek king. The book is a prayer.
