Perfect Baby Book for those with Faith

This baby book is nothing like the rest. It gives you pages to put important events from your faith into it. Unlike the rest of the books out there, which do not give you space for the important event in your faith. It also has pages with idea that are important that the other books don't have. I really like this book.

Good introduction to children's lives in China
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-13
With simple text and large, colorful photographs, this book describes a typical school day for Ren Yikang, a seven-year-old girl who lives in the city of Changzhi in the Shanxi Province of northern China. The photos are especially effective for portraying ordinary things that children would wonder about their counterparts' lives in China. We see what kind of food Yikang eats, what kind of clothes she wears (a sharp blue, white & red uniform at school), how the school day is structured, and how she and her parents spend their time when they get home from work and school. Some of the images show the striking differences between Chinese and American children's lives: photos of the children mopping the school's floors at the beginning of the day; children practicing their mathematics, each with an abacus at their desk. Other images are familiar: Yikang playing on her father's computer, watching the Olympics on TV, reading books with her mother before bedtime. Other favorites of mine are photos of Yikang eating milk and crackers for breakfast, an art teacher using computer images to teach about the human body in motion, and two girls snacking on sunflower seeds straight from the flower. The photos are cropped wide enough so that we can see the everyday details of Yikang's life: how the bathroom and living room are furnished, what the food looks like, the items for sale at the local market. The text is a perfect accompaniment to the photos, explanatory, but not long-winded. At the end of the book, the author includes a "More About China" section, very briefly touching on China's past, natural resources, religion, people, and language. The book also contains a glossary of Chinese words, a brief index, and an even briefer bibliography of other sources.

Another good resource on family life in China is the videotape Families of China, a 30-minute look at the daily lives of two children, one in the city, and one in the country.

A Child's Story of Thanksgiving

Review Date: 2000-11-12
I looked over dozens of Thanksgiving books at the bookstore to find one that told the story of Thanksgiving . I thought this one was one of the two best I saw. The story was told simply, but also describing new words well. It starts with why people chose to leave England, the hardships they faced here, how the Indians helped the newcomers, and how the first Thanksgiving came about. What I thought really added to this story was that it described how we celebrate Thanksgiving today, and things we can do to show our thanks by helping others. That was one thing I was really looking for in a Thanksgiving book. I wanted my 5 year old to understand better why we do things for others during the holidays, and throughout the year. This may be a little long for too young kids, but looks great for 4 and older. Hope you enjoy it too.

Extra Lovely Le Mair Illustrations
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-25
This is a delightfully presented compilation of familiar nursery songs, poems, and stories. I have hunted for Willebeek Le Mair books that I could afford for over 35 years. The originals are so expensive and often very fragile. Some of the reprints have not had very high quality pictures. This is one of the nicest modern collections of her lovely drawings that I have found. Warne has also published The Mother Goose Treasury (ISBN 0723245495) and A.A. Milne's A Gallery of Children (ISBN 1723246661) illustrated by her - both beautifully done as well. The BONUS in this book is that it contains two fairy tales with Le Mair illustrations, Snow White and Little Red Riding Hood. I have never seen these before and they are darling. A Must-Buy!

Stuck for some new material for a Childrens Day program? Well, look no further. This small paperback book is jammed packed with numerous ideas and suggestions for such a program. The recitations, exercises, readings, songs, and childrens prayers are at multi appropriate age levels. This book was a tremendous resource when planning such a program for an entire Sunday School prek - 12th grade. I am the director of our church's religious education programming and I plan on utilizing some of these ideas throughout the Sunday School year to foster a more child friendly worship service. Parents and members of our congregation thoroughly enjoyed the children participation. I highly reccommend this book!

This amiable board book is one of four in a weather series about Chloe, the white cat. In suitable simply illustrations and phrases, Chloe enjoys the wind, along with the clothing and pretend games that go along with it. Very young children will both learn from and enjoy this fine offering, as well as others in the series. This is one board book that actually caters to the intended audience of tiny children, as opposed to being a more complicated picture book for older children that has been watered down and resold by marketers.

Christmas traditions unmasked

Review Date: 2004-12-05
I found this book at a second hand store. The daily chapters discuss Advent, St. Nicholas, St. Lucia, the Yule log, Las Posadas, hanging stockings, Christmas plants, and evergreens. This is a wonderful book for younger children who ask "Why" about so many things, and for the rest of us who may never have learned some of the origins of the holiday traditions associated with Christmas.

Not Christmas without this story
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-30
When she was in the third grade my older sister bought a little book of christmas stories with the nickles she had saved by not having milk at break time. "Christmas Every Day" is our favorite story from this carefully preserved little book. Our mother still reads "Christmas Every Day" every year for her grandchildren. Though we are all grown we still enjoy the story too. Even my oldest sister's hyper-active 7 year old sit's quietly for his grandma's reading of "Christmas Every Day."

It was a great relief for me to find that Amazon.com had "Christmas Every Day" because the little book my sister brought home in the early 1960's is quickly becoming too fragile to handle. Thanks Amazon.com, someday I hope to read "Christmas Every Day" to my grandchildren.
