Definitive Landmark work -- highly readable
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.

This book gives a complete summary of the major problems with child care in the United States related to the high cost to parents, the mediocre quality of most care, and the difficulty parents have finding it. The authors argue that the affordability problem can only be solved through large increases in financial aid and that the federal government is the only practical source given the magnitudes involved. They also make recommendations for more public spending to create incentives for parents to demand good quality services and for providers to give it. I found the book extremely informative, authoritative, and easy to read.

We love the animal rescue series!

Emily Costello writes the best children's books with strong female progtaganits I've ever read! From feisty nine-year old Stella, who has a deep love of animals, to her forest ranger mother and aunt Anya, who is town vet, the women are smart, capable and unflinching in times of stress--models so difficult to find in so many of today's children's books. (The thing I like least about the books are their sappy covers--clearly the publishers think girls will fall for doe-eyed animal caricatures.) The stories, though, wow. Issues surrounding the environment, wildlife awareness, personal responsibility and overcoming stereotypes are all addressed and handled adeptly by Emily Costello, who knows how to tell a story as well. These books are aimed at nine year olds, but I've read almost all of them aloud to my five year old daughter. We are hooked and can't wait for more. Thank you, Emily Costello, I've been looking for you for so long....

Fun, easy crafts for young animal lovers
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-11
This is a perfect book for young children who are interested in animals and nature. Each section has information about a particular animal and its habitat along with a fun craft project based on that habitat. The craft projects are simple and fast, and the kids can do many of the steps themselves. Most of the materials required are objects you would already have in your house.

I am a first grade teacher always looking for interesting books to help encourage my children to read. Well, this book was a success! They loved the pictures and were able to read the text without too much difficulty. It was predictable text and that made it fun for even the lower readers because eventually they were able to remember what some of the more difficult words were and have success in reading a book on their own. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to introduce non-fiction with pictures. This is especially effective with boys as they are more drawn to real pictures and stories.

Fellow parents, if you like fall, family outings, and certainly, sipping cider, you'll want this book for your children's library. No doubt elementary school teachers will call on this book fall after fall as well. Apple Cider Making Days is a delicious blend of facts about the cider pressing process and the warmth of family pride and cooperation. Friar's illustrations are a perfect complement to Purmell's clean, crisp
story content. From the cheery cover to the cider making facts in the back, this work of creative non-fiction is a delight. I raise my cider glass to Apple Cider Making Days. You will too!

Who Wouldn't Want to Spend a Day with Apple Dumplin'?

"Apple Dumplin's Day" is a board book all about Strawberry Shortcake's little sister, Apple Dumplin'. What a great idea! Each page is just a sentence or two, each working well with the delightful pictures. The description on the back of the book describes it as "adorable" and that'll get no argument from me. Overall, this is a great book for any "Strawberry Shortcake" or Apple Dumplin' fan. It covers everything from morning wakeup, to a wagon ride, a tea-party, and being tucked in at night. You also get to see Apple Dumplin's pet, Apple Ducklin'.

Examines without bias
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-07
Finally a book that cuts through the bias surrounding discussions about childcare to give parents the straight facts. Too often the debate about appropriate care gets mired in discussion about morals and family values but the need for childcare --whatever our personal opinions are-- isn't going away; parents deserve the information in this book. For those actively searching for quality substitute care, the second-half of the book contains valuable insight into what a good care situation looks like based on the research uncovered in the first half of the book. I strongly recommend this book to any parent considering using non-parental care or anyone interested in child advocacy issues.

Excellent addition to your curriculum!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-13
This is a really wonderful book. It helps you plan a virtual field trip with your kids to the seven continents. In the beginning, they make their own "passport" and even a suitcase (from cereal box) to start their trip. The first stop is North America, where they will learn and craft about Native people from Canada and USA (making a Totem Pole), Mexico (making Papel picado), USA (making a statue of Liberty, a replica of Spirit of St. Louis plane), and other projects. Then, the next step is The Pacific Islands and Australia where kids will learn and craft about animals and art in the region. In Asia, kids will make a Japanese doll, a Chinese paper fan and an Indian elephant just to mention some things. In Africa, projects include a desert sand dune, a striped zebra and the Great Pyramid among others. In Europe, they will learn and craft about Eiffel Tower, Russian matryoshkas, castles, windmills, etc. In Central and South America, kids will learn and craft about music instruments, animals and folk crafts. In Antarctica, kids will learn about icebergs, penguins, whales.

This book is not only fun for kids, but it offers many opportunities to learn. For every project, it includes a map and location of the topic studied, and it contains other useful information to share, such as scientific facts about what the kids are crafting (like in the case of animals), some easy science experiments related, suggestions of books to read around that topic, and curious facts that will amaze everyone.

This book works great for Social Studies in the lower elementary grades, but it can also be used to teach science or to take ideas for reading response projects.
