Turkey Pox is not your average Thanksgiving story. It's about a girl named Charity who gets the Chicken Pox on Thanksgiving. Her family has to cancel their trip to Nana's for Thanksgiving dinner, so Nana brings Thanksgiving dinner to them. There are many funny parts in this story, especially when we learned about what turkey pox were! The pictures help make the story hilarious. We think kids would love reading this book because all kids get the chicken pox. We think the author and illustrator worked very hard to come up with a creative story.

My four year old son loves to count the objects on each page and sing the last verse on every page. It's kind of a memory game, counting, singing, cultural and Christmas book all in one.

Against the backdrop of the approaching Christmas holiday, her role in the church play, and her family's wonderful holiday traditions, young Vicky Austin experiences feelings of rivalry for a sibling not yet born, and whose impending birth threatens to disrupt the holiday. This is a warm, loving book. It is an excellent story for older children, and I would recommend making the reading of it, chapter by chapter, part of a family's preparation for Christmas, like a literary advent calendar

My all time favorite Christmas book

If you love Madeleine L'Engle's books, then this is a definite "must have" for the holidays. Read about the Austin family as they prepare for Christmas, the church pageant, and a new addition to the family. Their warmth and love for each other are contagious, and yet they are a "real" family, growing pains and all. This is a fabulous book for young girls - and one to read every year in preparation for the holiday season.

I work in the nursery at my church and recently got a position with 18 mo. - 3 year olds. There are often situations that come up that are trying and this book really opened my eyes to a lot of things. It is a wonderfully written heart-warming book that gives hope to all who have struggled but are still passionate about caring for the little ones.

This is a phenomenal book! It is not a "how to" book per say but do you ever learn a lot about children and what makes them tick. I learned so much from these true stories that I know it will help me tremendously as a childcare provider and as a parent. I read a library copy but am going to purchase this book - more than a few times I wanted to highlight some things. Very good and highly reccommended.

A picturebook about a young girl living in Alaska who looks forward to the longest day of the year - the solstice

Featuring a skillfully written text in the form of a kind of prose poetry by Deb Vanasse, which is perfectly framed by the full color artwork of Jeremiah Trammell, Under Alaska's Midnight Sun is a picturebook about a young girl living in Alaska who looks forward to the longest day of the year - the solstice. During this time the sun never sets on Alaska, people and animals are reluctant to sleep, and the midnight sun shines brightly. The playfully exuberant illustrations are the perfect complement to this read-aloud storybook that will introduce young readers to how different day and night can be at far northern latitudes.

This story brings me back to childhood and brings back forgotten memories of how fun it was to stay up late with my family as a child. In this story you follow a little girl and her little brother on a journey through a world of majestic sceneries and wildlife which is brought to life by Trammell's beautiful paintings.
I beleive that a succesful children's book needs to inspire a childs imagination and keep them interested and involved from cover to cover, this book does all of these and has my highest recomendation for children of all ages and adults alike.

What a book to keep romance in the air for any age and let the young children have fun in sharing valentines! We always want to be creative with what they put their valentines in. This book has so many suggestions for boys and girls. We encorporated these for our valentine parties and for cards in general- such as birthday card holders. Suggestion: Purchase the complete set.

My son loves Valentines and we have gotten totally off track with holidays so we are reading the books as we get to them. This picture book is about 2 "kids" bringing Valentine joy to their neighbors. I thought it was a sweet book and my 8-year-old son loves bunnies. Recommended for preschool - 2nd grade.

I purchased this book for our library because most of the books describing Valentine's Day are boring, outdated and worn. This fresh perspective includes facts, plus gives you ideas on how to make your own valentines. To me, it is "killing two birds with one stone," but really three birds when you think how much you have enjoyed the story and illustrations!

From Romans to Romance.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-09
Written in a simple and easy to understand style, this exciting, interesting and fact-filled book explains all about Valentine's Day from it's pagan roots in the Roman's celebration of Lupercus and Juno to Pope Gelasius' selection of February 14th to celebrate Saint Valentine. The book explores Valentine traditions in several countries and tells about the time in U.S. history when Valentine's Day was a holiday of dread; the penny dreadfuls. The illustrations that accompany the text are wonderful, especially the ones that reproduce what valentines have looked like over the centuries. This book is full of information and as an adult I learned some things from reading it. It's the most thorough and informative children's book on Valentine's Day that I have ever read and after reading it to the kids I teach, I know that children enjoy reading it, too.

FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS CHARMING & INFORMATIVE BOOK

Just finished reading this book to my children, ages 3 and 9. We have read other books on Valentine's Day, but this one has it all. The history on the origins of Valentine's Day is complete and discusses the mystery without being confusing. We had read about Lupercus before, but not that he was originally petitioned to rid Rome of wolves. The book had me dreamy-eyed imagining Valentine writing love notes on violet leaves, using birds as his delivery service. As a homeschooler, I was thrilled with the tiny lesson that "lace" is Latin for "to catch." As if the stories weren't beautiful enough, the illustrations are gorgeous. They made me want to begin sketching! Charming reproductions of olden-time valentines that had me longing for a Victorian-lace Valentine. I appreciated the book's completely authentic drawing of a third century priest's vestments mirroring our Byzantine priest today. Other books have mentioned a pope, but this book uses his name, Pope Gelasius, and a favorable drawing of him. Just the Valentine's information I was looking for. Young and old would appreciate this book. I am considering it as gift for our godchild. Wonderful!

A vivid imagination and talent is what it would take to write a book like this. The story kept my attention to the end. The plot is not predictable, as with a number of other books. The characters are well developed with unique personalities. I finished the book in a few days. I couldn't wait to find out how Roger would get out of the mess he got himself into. I think you'll be glad you bought this book! Great book Colleen!

Do you remember Valentine's Day in fifth grade?
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-06
Valentine's Day can be murder if you're Marsha and Roger. This book would be funny to both boys and girls, because everyone has experienced the boy-girl rivalry that goes on in fifth grade. Roger Friday is a typical fifth grade class clown who immensely enjoys making the girls miserable; however, the new girl in town, Stacey Trinidad captures Roger's heart. When he tries to deliver a semi-mushy valentine to Stacey's mailbox, it falls into the hands of Roger's arch enemy Marsha Cesseono, the average "cootie-infested" fifth grade girl. What follows proves for delightful entertainment, as more mixed up valentine mishaps become the talk of the fifth grade.

This is a short, but sweet look at a group of friends who are each doing something special for Valentines day. Marmalade made a fancy Valentine, Ginger helps Gumball make special treats, Kiwi picks flowers for his friends, Peaches decorates with lots of hearts. The book ends with a note about giving and sharing to show your friends how much you care. This book is appropriate for ages 2-4.
