I learned that not all people are mean, and that they do not hurt other people. I think that Tippu learned that as well.

I liked the book because it took the approach of teaching an audience to appreciate animals, especially elephants. The fact that the author used baby animals to help convey a nice message that made me feel good about my stand on saving endangered species. The stork is a hero.

I really enjoyed this book. It was informative and innovative. I easily looked up problems and found the tools necessary to handle them. It was also easy reading in between the many other jobs one does as a parent!

I have read this book and found it to be a wonderful tool to help me raise my daughter Emma. The tools provided by Virginia have helped me be a better parent to my daughter and has helped our relationship be more loving in every way. I feel much more in control of every situation and I DON'T HAVE TO YELL EVERY TIME!!!!
Try it... you'll like it.

I read this book while waiting for my daughter's Mother's Day Out class to begin. It was great! I am ordering a copy for my kids and my nieces. It never hurts to have another way to reinforce the good stuff.
The book is recommended for ages 2-4. I say buy it a little early and be prepared. It covers sharing, patience, etc., which many kids have to deal with before age 2, since they're in daycare and other programs with other kids, common toys and caregivers, etc.

This book is great for teaching kids why they should share, be kind, help others and obey their parents. The book gives specific examples of situations that kids find themselves in and how God wants them to be. It also gives scripture references so that you can look in the bible and read God's words for each situation.
I've found it goes a long way in presenting God's reasons for why they should behave instead of just your reasons. It's a really, really good book that my kids always request at bedtime.

A Lost Classic

This book is the sequel to the English school-boy classic Tom Brown School Days. However, while Tom Brown School Days has been continuously republished since its first edition in 1857, Tom Brown at Oxford has not been republished since 1910. In this edition, the protagonist is again an incarnation of Thomas Hughes' own life, this time his experiences as an athletic and rambunctious undergraduate at Oxford in the tumultuous 1840's. Tom Brown, like Hughes, is drawn into the upheavel of his times, specifically the socialist uprisings that found a more popular literary voice in several of Charles Dickens' works. Brown is also a commited Christian and his socialism is tied up with his faith. I have made this book an annual read because I find that the compromises and the ambitions of the times have not changed as much in the last 160 years as some people might have thought. Hughes' challenges the modern reader to look past our proclivity toward passivity and cynicism and to believe that real change, both individually and as a culture can happen. He also paints a pretty compelling vision of why this is desireable.
ANOTHER LOST CLASSIC THAT NEEDS TO BE IN REPRINT

I am often amazed that this wonderful classic is so often overlooked and am extremely saddened that it is not longer in print. The author's style and syntax is pure Victorian, through and through with wonderfully convoluted sentences, and indeed, paragraphs. This work, which takes place during the mid 1800s, circa 1840, is the story of a young man in a English Public School (which, unlike in the U.S. is actually a private school to which only the elite can afford to attend). This story takes off after Tom, our hero, has graduated from Rugby and is now attending Oxford. Tom is oler now, and as to be expected, his social consciene, and envolves all the entails. While not absolute, this work is obviously autobiographical in nature. When this work is read, the reader must keep in mind when it was written, the society in which it was written and most importantly, the attitude of the society in which it was written. I was first introduced to this work well over forty years ago and have given it several reads since that time. I strongly suspect that many young readers of today may find the syntax difficult at first, but if they press on, there is so much to learn from this book. As another reviewer well pointed out, some of the events addressed here are not what you would call "politically correct" by our standards to day in this country, but then we must remember when and where it was written. Any student of the history of literature or a student of our language will most likely be fascinated with this work. I highly recommend.

It is truly inspirational to read, from a young girl, lessons that I didn't learn until my 30's and insights I had yet to learn until reading this book. It is very easy to focus on what we don't have or what could be. Sometimes lessons aren't learned until a tragedy is stuck in front of us. Estar gives inspiration & hope on how to deal with unforeseen events. She is amazing.

Though this might sound like a book primarily of interest to critically ill children and their families, anyone could use this book as an inspiration during the inevitable hard times that come to every life. Rather than being stumbling blocks, Miss Hester's many challenges have become building blocks, paving the way to a positive, productive present and future. I would recommend this book for readers of all ages, both for its inspirational qualities and as a valuable model of high-quality children's writing generated by a true young talent.

The publisher of this book states it is suitable for ages 11 and up. Since I typically do not review children's books I did not intend to read it and placed it on a stack to pass on to someone that would. However, as luck would have it, I met the author at a booksellers trade show in Denver and promised her I would at least take another look at it. I am glad I did.
This is one of the most readable, informative books not only on a deadly Tsunami that struck the coast of Hilo and Laupahoehoe, Hawaii, on April Fools' Day in 1946, but about Tsunami's in general and the creation of a global warning system in the Pacific Rim. The tragic story of the April Fools'Day tsunami which claimed the lives of 26 residents in the Laupahoehoe area, including 16 school children, is told in a narrative style that brings the event into sharp focus and provides a foundation for the remainder of the book.
In addition to the Laupahoehoe and Hilo story the book provides a non-technical, understandable explanation of the Pacific Tsunami Warning System, installed after the April Fools' Day tragedy, as well as what causes tsunami's, their history, the scientific efforts to understand and predict them, and a discussion of the day after Christmas 2004 Tsunami in the Indian Ocean that claimed hunderds of thousands of lives. Also, there are a number of helpful sidebars that provide answers to multiple questions about the causes of tsunami's as well as an excellent bibliography and "further information" section that would be a credit to a more scholarly work.
To be sure this book is suitable for ages 11 and up but I submit it will be of use and interest to readers of practically any age remotely interested in the history of Tsunami's and the state of the science dealing with their causes and detection. The author is a former school teacher and was named Author of the Year in Georgia. This book is a testament to her award winning, writing abilities.

Gail Karwoski's TSUNAMI: A Powerful, Well-written Book that You Won't Forget

Mention the word, "tsunami," and even the brave people of the world will run for higher ground. But nobody was shouting a warning in 1946 on a sunny April Fool's Day in Laupahoehoe, Hawaii when twenty-six people, including sixteen school children, were killed by a tsunami.
Karwoski got the idea for this book while visiting Hawaii the summer before the deadly 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. After doing a great deal of reseach, she found that the tsunami that hit Laupahoehoe caused scientists to study tsunamis and develop a warning system.
Illustrated by John MacDonald, this book is well-organized with five chapters, a "further information" section, and a bibliography. Chapter one is a dramatic account of the tragic tsunami that hit Laupahoehoe, Hawaii in 1946. The second chapter covers that same tsunami as it moves on to Hilo. Chapter three details the deadly history of tsunamis. Tsunami science is the subject of chapter four, and chapter five tells about the warning system developed by scientists.
Well-written, meticulously-researched, and fast-paced, dramatic details including eye-witness reports, make this book an excellent choice for middle schoolers or anyone older than nine who would like to learn about tsunamis.
Overall, this is a powerful story of a natural disaster that offers valuable information.

Is your little one worried about a new situation? Making a transition?
Entering a new school or grade?
Meet Tucker.
Learn how Tucker manges to have a 4 carrot school day. Of course he gets some extra help from Mama and baby sister. I love this book. I love Susan's art work and get lost in all her down home details.
My daugther enters kindergarten in less than a week. We've been reading Tucker all summer long.

this is a fantastic story for any little one a bit nervous about heading off to school (or away from mommy & daddy for the first time). tucker the rabbit goes off to school, leaving his stuffed dog and baby sister, tulip, behind. while at school, he embarrasses himself by dropping bottles of paint and continuing to sing when everyone else has stopped. his teacher, miss blossom, takes care of him along the way, and tucker manages to make some new friends. in the end, he has a "4-carrot" day and can't wait to go back to school the next day.
we LOVE this book (and not just because our son is named tucker!)--the scenarios are quite real for little people and the message is warm and fuzzy. the pictures are adorable as well.

Turkey Pox is not your average Thanksgiving story. It's about a girl named Charity who gets the Chicken Pox on Thanksgiving. Her family has to cancel their trip to Nana's for Thanksgiving dinner, so Nana brings Thanksgiving dinner to them. There are many funny parts in this story, especially when we learned about what turkey pox were! The pictures help make the story hilarious. We think kids would love reading this book because all kids get the chicken pox. We think the author and illustrator worked very hard to come up with a creative story.

Against the backdrop of the approaching Christmas holiday, her role in the church play, and her family's wonderful holiday traditions, young Vicky Austin experiences feelings of rivalry for a sibling not yet born, and whose impending birth threatens to disrupt the holiday. This is a warm, loving book. It is an excellent story for older children, and I would recommend making the reading of it, chapter by chapter, part of a family's preparation for Christmas, like a literary advent calendar

If you love Madeleine L'Engle's books, then this is a definite "must have" for the holidays. Read about the Austin family as they prepare for Christmas, the church pageant, and a new addition to the family. Their warmth and love for each other are contagious, and yet they are a "real" family, growing pains and all. This is a fabulous book for young girls - and one to read every year in preparation for the holiday season.
