A sweet story with excellent pictures

Review Date: 2006-08-22
My son picked this up at the library tonight and we HAD to read it before bed. All three kids crowded around and sat quietly for the whole book. I saw them looking through it many times before they went to bed.

The illustrations are excellent. All the kids commented on how much they liked them and I was equally impressed. The story was sweet and appropriate for our family (the oldest can't slow down either!) I know that this will open many talks about slowing down to see the details we miss when we run too fast.

As the 6-year-old was going to bed he pointed to the picture of the cheetah and said, "I'm going to be that guy." That's his highest compliment to a book - wanting to become one of the characters.

Read this book to any child who runs fast or moves slowly. Both will benefit from the lessons taught here.

Engaging Story, Exuberant Art!

From the publisher: Howard the cheetah loves being fast. To him, everyday is a race - and he always wins. But when Howard hurts his leg and can't run, the only animal he can keep up with is a sloth - the slowest creature around! How could anyone like being slow? It's up to Quince the sloth to show Howard how wonderful slow can be!

Erik Brooks' engaging story and exuberant art celebrate an unusual friendship as well as the beauty of life at a different pace.

Help for parents of low-functioning autistic children

Review Date: 2004-01-21
This is an extremely well-written book. As a parent of a child with low-functioning autism myself, I have read many books. However, this one really stands out for me. It is written by a parent who has dealt with low-functioning autism in her life. It is written from the heart by a parent to parents. This book gives us the information that we need, fact based and simple to read. It is well researched, written with a sense of humor which is much needed some days. Excellent book for parents wondering ok.. I have the diagnosis where do I go from here, how do I help, how do I reach my child. I give it 5 stars!!

In this unique book, Dara Lane explains in readable detail and a genuine voice the techniques that have allowed her to teach her son, who has severe autism, to master tasks of daily living. She offers encouragement, caution, and practical tips that work to teach skills in dressing, toileting, basic communication, and other essentials. Ms. Lane shows love for her son and caring for everyone who's attempting this enormous challenge. Her book is a valuable work that I wish I'd had while raising my daughter, who has a similar disability, through her toddler years and childhood.

I feel as calm as a first snow in an open field when I look at this book.
A whole story with no text, narrated visually with beautiful simple paintings of a boy making a snowman from light till dusk, then going home leaving the snowman only to melt the next day. My 3 year old son loves looking at the pictures & telling the story to me.

Snow Day

This is one of the most wonderful books I've come across in a while. By narrating this story visually, the wordless story opens itself up to a wide array of interpretations, from the literal to the philosophical, reminiscent of classics such as The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupery, which was clearly a visual influence. The story revolves around a snowman, built with exuberance by a young boy. The snowman stands triumphant in his prime during the crisp snowy night like an olympic gold medalist, only to experience his inevitable downfall with the coming of the bright sunny morning, like some tragic hero or the common man. Lovingly painted in watercolor with a nod to Japanese influences, Daniel Peddle fully understands how to play with his visuals, in his illustrations and the negative space. He utilizes the whole page, with the negative space representing the glorious snow, which takes up almost the entirety of nearly every page. It's just brilliant. This book is an instant classic that can be enjoyed by a child as well as an adult and especially together. This book will make a delightful gift to any child and I plan to get several copies to give away for the holidays.

My sons, ages 3 and 1, both enjoy the numerous flaps in this book, and also like looking at the snow removal equipment depicted. If you have John Deere fans at home, this will be a popular book.

Could not find it in stores.

Wonderful pictures and book!

I bought this book so that I had something winter-timeish to read to my 2 year old. It's excellent. She asks for it again and again. Milbourne even describes how snow forms at an appropriate age-level and in an appropriate way. It is a very good book and I highly recommend it! I would say that this book is for 2-6 or so. I'm not sure on that high end, maybe higher depending upon if they are reading it themselves. But, it's definately something for a 2 year old to grow with/into.

Original and imaginative: We love this book!

I'm a collector of great children's books, and I was delighted to find this one: it's fresh, imaginative and just-plain-fun. I've started reading it to my three-month-old so that Hesselberg's stories are the ones she grows up on -- a big improvement over Cinderella and the Three Little Pigs! I've passed along the title to one of my faculty colleagues, who has written a book about children's literature: she loved it, too. It's a big hit -- with my infant daughter and her grown-up mommy.

As a elementary school teacher, I use this book all the time for great read aloud stories which never fail to light up eyes and get laughs from my students. Sometimes the story is a prompt for them to write their own tales. Kids are tough audiences and often the books that garner the acclaim of the adult critics bomb with the intended audience. These stories past the test in the classroom week after week.

My 3 year old loves spongebob (i usually try to steer her away from him), she insisted on getting this book over all other valentine books. I was really surprised when I read it to her. The illustrations under the flaps are adorable - I was really impressed with the detailed valentine cards given by spongebob. I enjoyed reading this to her. This is definately one of the better spongebob books I've come across.

This book is perfect for babies & small children. My son is 9 months old & this is one of his favorite books. It has short phrases on each page while teaching numbers & doesn't have a lot of pages. The colors are bright & pictures are cute. The edges of the pages have a shamrock & my son finds it easy to turn the pages. He's also attracted to the cover because the shamrocks are shiny.

This board book makes for a good introduction to St Patrick's Day for younger kids because of it's simple concepts, colorful pictures and sturdy construction. (It can also be used year 'round for it's counting.) "St. Patrick's Day Countdown" is a book that counts backwards from 5 down to 1 using St Patrick's Day theme items and then some; bunnies, shamrocks, a pot of gold... you get the idea. It's also fun because the book is not exactly book shaped but has grabbable shamrock "tabs" so little ones can help turn the pages. I bought this for my one year old niece and her mom said it was "perfect". I like that it does not have hit-you-over-the-head St. Patrick Day overtones (ie. nothing religious) to it but still captures the spirit of the day.

Excellent introduction to St. Patrick's Day

Why do we celebrate St. Patrick's Day? Why do we wear green? And just who is St. Patrick? This book, one of a series of holiday symbols books, answers these questions and more in a clear, concise writing style. One of the best parts of the book, though, is the large, colorful, eye-popping photographs on each page. As a librarian in a K-3 elementary school, this books meets all of my requirements: informative, accurate and eye-catching enough that students will pick it up on their own. I also recommend the remaining books in the series: Easter Bunnies, Thanksgiving Turkeys, Fourth of July Fireworks, Halloween Jack-o'-Lanterns, and Christmas Trees.

Excellent story that is beautifully written and illustrated. It captures an important part of our heritage while emphasizing the importance of family tradition and roots. My 8 year old just loved it and I can see my self reading this to her over and over again. The story teaches U.S. history on one level and family sharing on another. The illustrations are beautiful. I strongly recommend this book.

A very sweet story with a lovely message about traditions and remembering your heritage even as changes through the generations blur the past. Well written in a style that respects both the subject and the readers, and lovely illustrations as well. Hope to see more from this author!
