Helps Transition Kids from Home to School

Review Date: 1999-11-27
Really well done. My little one was pretty apprehensive about starting kindegarten this year, so I searched Amazon for something to help make the transition from home to school a little easier. This book addressed all of her major concerns: What is a teacher like? What will the other kids be like? What do they do in school? When do we eat? And who do we eat with?

The discussion for parents at the back of the book assists adults in identifying and addressing our kids' concerns.

Really helpful. Well written and beautifully illustrated. I'd recommend it to any parent with kids just starting school.

A delightful read for middle-grade kids

School Days Daze is a novel for young adults, narrated from the perspective of a twenty-two year old young man as he remembers his days at Rootstown. Packed with joy, challenges, and wacky adventures such as the great French Fry Feud, School Days Daze is a delightful read for middle-grade kids, and also lends itself well to being read aloud for story time. Catchy poems intersperse the upbeat vignette stories in this warmly recommended novel. "Dodge Ball War": Curls in her hair / A pretty dress / Bows, blue and red / Grab the ball / Fling it through the air / And knock her on the head // It's picture day / Shirts and shoes and ties / Running in circles / Getting all sweaty / Avoiding where the ball flies // We should stay neat / All prim and proper / But that would be a bore. / Hey this is recess / It's important business / And it's all part of dodge ball war!

This book will take you back to the golden years of elementary school. It is a great book for the young and old. Anyone can relate to this tale of school experiences, unforgetable teachers and the puppy love of childhood. The author uses playful poems and such through out the story that gives it a whimsical feel. School Days Daze is an appropreciate title for the memories and events of school stick with us forever.

School in grandma's Day is a wonderful trip back to school in the 40's, and a surprising experience for those kids of today who are in 4-6th grades. The featured Grandma, Gloria Jenkins, has put together a highly interesting account with great photos of her childhood school experiences. Good reading for all school libraries.

This is a great way for kids to get the feel for what it was like for Grandma back when she went to school during World War II. The actual photos and mementos from the past of the featured grandma, Gloria Jenkins, are precious (as is the photo of her with her present-day grandchildren). It is an interesting read for adults as well as children and can provide a link between the generations, making one marvel at how different things are now as compared to then. I hope all grade school libraries get this book as well as the others in the "In Grandma's Day" series.

Did you know that octopi are as smart as dogs? Or that Viperfish have 350 lights in their mouths? You'll find these and more interesting facts in SEA MONSTERS, the companion research guide to DARK DAY IN THE DEEP SEA. Discover old sea monster legends, info on squids, octopi, and other animals in the abyss. Also learn about prehistoric sea monsters, and exploration of the deep sea. I've met the Scientific Consultant for this book, Dr. Sonke Johnsen, he said that "The world will need thousands of new Marine Biologists, because we've only just begun to explore the mysteries of the deep sea." I'd highly recommend this book to all fans of the MAGIC TREE HOUSE series, especially kids ages 7-12, who are interested in Deep Sea animals.

Jolly Good Fun

Review Date: 2007-04-05
Having barely escaped from the Onts (really two giant ants who wanted to kill them), Wally and Cheyenne Shluffmuffin have no choice but to hitchhike their way back to Jolly Days Orphanage. After catching a ride with a truck driver who claims to keep a brain in his trunk, Wally and Cheyenne are happy to be back at Jolly Days but Hortense Jolly is less pleased to see them and rats them out to the Onts. Wally and Cheyenne are soon on the run again with the Onts hot on their trail. Wally and Cheyenne have to deal with getting lost in a swamp, quicksand, no food, police, and a giant spider. As if that wasn't enough, just why does that zombie look like their late father?

Taking place right after "The Onts", the first book in Dan Greenburg's Secrets of Dripping Fang series, ended, "Treachery and Betrayal at Jolly Days" is great fun. There's a nice sense of humor throughout the book which is full of odd ball characters like Verne the brain touting truck driver; Hortense Jolly; the Onts; the Zombie; a bus driver who insists on exact change because it's the law; the orphans of Jolly Days; and Edgar Spydelle who just happens to be married to a giant spider. There are also some laugh out loud gross moments, mostly dealing with the zombie. While this is a children's book and therefore most of the humor is aimed at children, there are also some especially funny moments that adults will love: the full page ad for the Jolly Days Orphanage that is in the yellow pages; policemen named Beckett and Kafka; and a small diner with an amazing menu that includes filet mignon and coq au vin. The illustrations by Scott Fischer are also very funny and readers should look closely at them for hidden jokes. At 124 pages, the book is just the right length for young readers.

"Treachery and Betrayal at Jolly Days" is jolly good fun.

Rabbi Deborah Bodin Cohen, whom I have had the pleasure of meeting on several occasions over the past four years, has managed to bring a story of biblical proportions down to size for the young set. The Genesis story of creation is told in simple, yet energetic terms, which will hold the attention of any child old enough to show an interest in books. A must-have for any parent who wants to acquaint his or her child with the basic stories of the Bible.

We are proud of Rabbi Debbie Cohen for her new book!

As vice president of education for Temple Emanuel in Cherry Hill, NJ, it has been a real pleasure and honor for me to work closely with Rabbi Debbie Cohen, our director of lifelong learning as she leads our religious school and adult education activities. We are especially proud of the publication of her first book, The Seventh Day, and we hope that her joy and enthusiasm for teaching our children about Shabbat will reach many readers, young and old.

We discovered this book when my oldest daughter was 4-years-old at our library. It was one of the few books she asked to hear more than once. She also was inspired to where her hair in the 'fountain' style described in the book. Recently, while listening to a tape of Patricia MacLachlan's stories we came across the story again. We all laughed out loud at the tale and ended up listening to it over and over again. We now have a list of friends we MUST buy it for. Four to six-year-olds are probably the best audience but I have given it to adult friends when they are having a sick day and need a grin to help get better.

Jane Duer illustrates Patricia MacLachlan's The Sick Day, a simple story of a young girl who has a sick day - her stomach aches and her throat feels sore. Good reading skills will lend to this easy story of a girl who involves her father in her day off, turning a sick day into something special after all.

This is a great book for understanding the causes and effects of the 1929 Stock Market Crash. This book not only answered all my questions about the crash, but it supplied me with a detailed account of the events that led up to the market crash and the aftermath that followed. It illustrates how greed, fear, ignorance, and deceit fueled the market crash. In addition, it dispels the myth that the 1929 Stock Market Crash caused the Great Depression. Because these same elements continue to influence the market today, it would be to one's advantage to learn about the crash before investing in the market. This book is for ages 12 and above.

A treasure for anyone who has adopted from PRC or Hong Kong

In my quest to finding books on China for my daughter.... I came across this book. It's about a young girls family in Hong Kong right before the historic change from the British to becoming part of The Peoples' Republic of China. Tsz Yan and other families who live in Hong Kong wonder what changes will happen and how their life will change when this happens.

The book is also interesting because it shows a difference perspective of how others go to school and how other families lives. Tsz Yan's father works in China and leaves on Sunday night to travel to China and stays there until Friday evening, so during the week it is just Tsz Yan and her mom. The photos are absolutely beautiful capturing everyday life in the eyes of a young girl. There is a translation page for 13 words used in this book! I wish they would do a follow up story on what did change and what stayed the same for this family!

A definate book for any child who's been adopted in Hong Kong or China!

Interesting and fun to read!

I read this book with my 8 year old son, we both really enjoyed it. Well written and cleverly entwining Tze Yan's homework into the story, this book offers a view into the weekend of a girl my son's age living in Hong Kong. It is full of interesting facts and ideas...things an 8 year old would think of, as well as fun pictures that capture lots of details.
