Oxford Bible Atlas

Review Date: 2001-03-26
The Oxford Bible Atlas, edited by Herbert G. May, is a detailed, extremely useful book that will heighten anyone's general understanding of biblical geography. It contains more than maps as it delves into the history behind the maps, and the archaeology behind the history. It cites biblical sources but also cites apocryphal books unfamiliar to most Protestant readers. The end result is a colorful, informative work that helps place both Old and New testaments into perspective.

The book is divided into three sections, the first introducing the ancient world, then the several maps, and concluding with an archaeological overview. Part one blends seemingly incompatible topics of biblical and geologic history. It includes biblical and secular accounts of ancient history. The atlas does not attempt to expound too greatly on the "Holy Land" as being somehow superior in importance. In fact the Holy Land occupies an important crossroads between east and west more so than it stands as a regional religious center of its own merit. Those who held power such as David, Herod, or even Pontius Pilate were rarely more than a regional or even local rulers who paled in stature when compared to Alexander or any of the Roman Emperors.

The map section covers most of the primary locations mentioned in the Bible, and illustrates the vastness of the biblical lands. Many maps retain ancient place names, though the primary focus is on the Near East. There are some areas not covered, such as the city of Tarshish, Jonah's destination when he attempted to flee from his responsibilities, and the route of the Exodus does not take them across either the Red Sea, or either the modern Gulf of Suez or Gulf of Aqaba. But these apparent omissions do little to detract from the overall effectiveness of the maps.

The final section is akin to a primer on biblical archaeology. It introduces Carbon 14 dating, how a site is developed, and a brief history of archaeological efforts in the region. It shows how cultures are understood by what has survived through the ages, and helps fill gaps when written records are not available.

The end result is a very informative atlas that readers of many different backgrounds will appreciate.

An (Irish) Gem of a book

This is a super, super book. Filled with gorgeous pictures and minimal text, the story follows a small dog called Paddy during his day off from working with the lovely acrobat Trilby O'Farrell. On this day he always takes his pay in a little purse and goes to town to spend it. We follow him from the shops, to the barber, to his little adventure when two naughty boys try to steal his money, and we even accompany him to his visit to the cinema to see Lassie in action. This is a wonderful book for younger children as the pages are stuffed full of colorful detail that bring Paddy to life, in fact the text is incidental as it is easy enough to follow the story without any words. Once again it is a shame that this book is out of print but if you can get hold of a copy I am sure that both you and your children will really appreciate this funny, and delightful little story.

This is one of my favorite books for children 18 months and up. Its zestful combination of simplicity and wit make it a winner for older children (3-5) and the glorious drawings of Ireland and a very cute puppy will win the hearts of younger kids. And what dog- (or Ireland-) loving adult can resist a story with a dog who goes to see "Lassie" and has a fine pint of suds in a local pub?

Humorous, yet calming, this is a glorious book for bedtime memories. Worth looking for!

Great story about an old shoemaker. He was very lonely one Christmas Eve. He read a story about Jesus that day. Wondering what he could do for Jesus, a voice speaks to him, telling the old shoemaker to watch out his window the next day and he will speak to him. But Jesus assured him that he will not be in a form the old shoemaker will readily recognize. He did show up the next day but in many different forms, i.e. a poor woman w/child, a hungry street cleaner, etc.

Powerful message.

In this lovely picture book for older children, Papa Panov is an elderly shoemaker, feeling lonely on Christmas Eve. He reads about the birth of Jesus, long ago, and how Mary and Joseph had been turned away at the inn. If they had come here, he thinks to himself, I would have taken them in and cared for them. After drifting off to sleep, Papa Panov has a dream in which Jesus says he will come and visit the old shoemaker the next day. Eagerly, Papa Panov watches the streets on Christmas day, looking for Jesus. Along comes the humble street sweeper, and then a homeless woman and her child, and others who are down on their luck and in need. Papa Panov, though he wants to be watching for Jesus, kindly reaches out to each one who comes his way, offering a bit of food and comfort. When the day ends and Jesus apparently has not come, Papa Panov is disappointed -- until in another dream Jesus says that he had come after all! "I was hungry, and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me water, I was cold and you took me in. All the time you were helping them, you were helping me!"

My 5 year old is a picky eater. He loved the book about food and choices we make. It has helped with his food choices if I remind him about the characters and what good food is and why our bodies need it.

This creation story from the Mien tribe of Laos provides an intriguing tale of a competitive pair who use the Mien people's embroidery as a pattern to create earth and sky. The siblings work in secret only to find their patterns don't fit together. Samples of traditional stitches and Mien embroidery patterned endpapers accompany a fine creation story.

A magnificently presented story

Nancy Raines Day adapts and retells a Laotian creation story in Piecing Earth & Sky Together. Beautifully illustrated throughout with full color artwork by Genna Panzarella, the story told by a Mein Grandmother is of a very competitive pair who use the dinstinctive embroidery of the Mein tribe to creat the arth and the sky. Because both siblings want to make their part of the world the most beautiful, they work in secret until it is finally time to reveal their handiwork -- only to discover that their two pieces don't fit together! Faam Toh solves the problem by stiching the favric into mountains, rivers, gorges, and valleys. Only then do the earth and sky fit perfectly, allowing all the plants and naimals to thrive. Piecing Earth & Sky Together is a magnificently presented story that would grace any school or community folklore collection for young readers.

I bought this for my 3 year old daughter who is all girl. She is just like Princess Jessica and loves to dress up and play pretend. It even has a real world older sister who makes fun of Princess Jessica for dressing up but the young girl stands up for herself and has a ball.

I can't tell you how many times my daughter has gone out in public in dress up clothes or wearing all her jewelry (just like Princess Jessica) but I've learned to be proud of her individuality and style.

My 3-year-old granddaughters can't get enough of this book - we read it at bedtime, over and over, every night. They love the pictures and the rhymes, and recite them along with me. When is Simon Davies going to give up more of the same?

This book not only contains bright, spectacular illustrations, but includes large flaps and a variety of textures that will keep a toddler's interest and contains humor that a older sibling would enjoy. The theme is about kisses which makes it a perfect choice for Valentine's Day or any occasion.

A must read for new parents!

I bought this book for a "new Dad" friend of mine. The book is informative and funny. Written in a straight forward language, it will teach you and make you laugh. I would highly reccommend this book not only for new dads, but also for new moms. Perfect for anybody that enjoys sports. The part about registering for baby stuff is priceless. And I have decided to go with a zone defense for my next holiday party. Definitely five stars! And when your kid gets a little older and inquisitive buy him Mercer's book "Smash It, Crash It, Launch It". I own it and rate it five stars too.

I bought this book for my husband and he loved it. He read it over the first weekend he had it. I have seen him open it several times since then. I have read parts of it and it is very funny and informative. It is written for guys, but I really enjoyed it myself. I think any new parent could benefit from it. The hints and advice are clear and easy to understand. This book and Be Prepared are the best dad books I have seen. They both combine humor and being helpful.

Max is Afraid to Go to His New School
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-11
"Moving to a new neighborhood is not easy. But Max got used to the new house and he met new friends. It wasn't until he had to go to a new school that he decided to hide." -- From the book

Max was terrified to start a new school. He imagined terrible things, such as his new teacher asking him to count to 30 or stand on one leg. Emmy, his sympathetic sister, thinks that practicing going to a new school would help him feel better--so she and Max visit Quetzal and the other dragons.

Max and Emmy wish on a dragon scale and end up in Dragon Land. Zak and Wheezie, the two-headed dragon, greet the siblings. "C'mon, let's go to Quetzal's School in the Sky", exclaims Wheezie.

Max is encouraged by Quetzal to try new things, as well as adapting dragon exercises so HE could do them (for example, Max can't breathe fire like the rest of the dragons--but he CAN eat salty chips and super-spicy red salsa and "breathe" some steam!)

This is an excellent book for children first starting school, or those who have moved and will begin attending a new school. However, my son was in neither of those situations (I homeschool), but he found this book interesting--asking me to read to him over and over again. (Now, he can read it on his own!)

If your child is a fan of the Dragon Tales cartoons on PBS, they'll no doubt love Quetzal and the Cool School!

I am glad that I got this book, because it talks about moving and having a new school. This is just in time for our move and my oldest daughter's first year of kindergarten and youngest daughter's first year of preschool. I like how Max finds solutions to overcome his problems without throwing tantrums and how Quetzal encourages Max to "try something new". This is a really good book, and I am very glad I bought it!
