This is a great book for kids because it shows them how important each of us is. We all play a part in keeping the system working. And when it fails, everything falls apart. The story is exciting, it's a lot of fun, and the author never lets up on the action.

A Parent's Life Changes in an Instant

Something happens to a parent when their child gets sick. Normal life vanishes and Mom or Dad have only one goal - restoring their child to health. When the illness drags on, or medical personnel can't make a diagnosis, normal life becomes a distant memory.

Kay Day faced this situation, to a much greater degree than many parents, but with a happier ending than some families get. She shares her story, with detail, humor, and the background of not only her own family history, but also the familiar hassles and concerns of a family move. I identified with the Day family's experiences and learned from the medical research the author did.

My favorite part of the book is the contribution of the patient's older sister, describing the impact of her sister's illness on her life and the conflicting emotions she experienced during that time. It was a forthright revelation that reminded me strongly of my feelings towards my younger siblings, a long time ago.

This is a great read, for young people and their loving parents.

Rebeccasreads highly recommends KILLING EARL as an interesting & sometimes humorous memoir of a terrible time in a family's life when their 12-year-old daughter suffers severe abdominal pain. It gives practical advice about navigating today's medical establishment, as well as useful Internet links & tips for patient advocates.

The courage of both mother & daughter, who refused to give in to defeat, is the backbone of the book. It should bring encouragement to everyone who suffers from "undiagnosable" pain. Rebecca's "mystery illness" affects over 86,000 American children every year. Up to date information about treatment for such cases is given. If it saves even one child from enduring the year of horror & agony that Rebecca & her family lived through, KILLING EARL was well worth writing.

This is a sweet book. My daughter is 3 and loves to read, she has been asking for some lift the flap books so I tried this one. She loves it and the simple large text is perfect for her burgeoning word recognition. I have since ordered Kipper's Sunny Day.

My son loves this book. We love all the Kipper Lift the Flap books. They're all so sweet. The story is simple, yet interesting, the artwork is cute and soft. I can highly, highly recommend everything Mick Inkpen has ever done.

My son loves this book in conjunction with the Sunny Day Lift the Flap book.

My 2 1/2 year old was given this book as a gift, and she has loved it since we opened it. I read it to her 3 times in the first sitting. She loves just looking at the pictures on her own and pointing out the different animals on each page. Really cute book that keeps her engaged and teaches a lesson I want her to know!
Thanks!!!!

Beautiful book; great for kids who love space "stuff"!

My almost-four-year-old loves all things space: Star Trek, space shuttles, Apollo 13, etc. I've tried to impress upon him that space isn't just "in the movies," but that someday, he, too, could be an astronaut...that people, have in fact, already "boldly gon where no one has gone before." This book proved an excellent vehicle for helping him understand that. While the language is too complicated for a four-year-old, he enjoys the meticulous paintings of the space shuttle's journey, from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad, then to space and back. An added bonus: He had seen paintings of the space shuttle in the exhibit halls at Kennedy Space Center, and wanted to "take them home." With the paintings in this book...he can do just that.

The drawings are excellent and the story is interesting

I really liked this book because it gave a lot of detail about the actual launch of the space shuttle, but not in technical terms, so kids could understand it

I just read the LDS Grandparents' Idea Book by Fay Klingler. The many experiences that grandparents have with their grandchilden are very worthwhile. The activities were fun to try and do; some will be tried over and over. As I read this book, I felt that grandparents love their grandchildren. It is a book that can be read again and again and still get a new thought from reading it.

Grandparenting....the best ideas ever!

I had the greatest grandparents ever and my parents were wonderful grandparents to my children, but when I found out I was going to be a grandmother the same week I turned 50 I was at a loss! What should I do? How would I ever measure up to my own and my children's expectations? Would this be hard? Besides my married son, I still had children at home to finish raising and I was going to have a grandchild!
Fay A. Klingler's book, The LDS Grandparents' Idea Book, is a treasure trove of information and suggestions! It is a source of ideas that would take many years and many grandchildren to exhaust.
Ms. Klingler has compiled ideas from many sources and many people and come up with a "Grandparenting 101" manual. She uses graphics to illustrate many of the ideas that are so easy to copy or tailor and modify to individual needs.
One of my favorites is on page 80, "the paper sandwich," which illustrates and describes a charming, crafty, colored paper sandwich with Grandma and Grandpa as the bread and kisses, hugs, admiration, and smiles as the meat/cheese and fixin's. She suggests tucking a $5 bill inside, too. This is fun for a teen-ager or even college student as well as a young child.
On page 149 one of Ms. Klingler's contributors relates the story of geese flying in V-formation and how, "by flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock of geese adds at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird were to fly on its own." Then she relates that to families! It is a beautiful idea from a very caring grandparent.
Who knew there is a "I Want You to Be Happy Day" on March 3rd?
Ms. Klingler knows! In her section on Activities for a Specific Day or Month she lists a myriad of ideas for fun celebrations!
Even though the title suggests a limited audience of LDS or Mormon Church members, it is not a limiting list by any means.
Now 4 grandchildren later, I'm so glad I found Fay Klingler's Idea Book. It is 172 pages of ideas for being the best I can be during this absolutely wonderful stage of my life..."Grandma!"

A friend of mine gave us this book, and my kids have LOVED it. They can't wait to build their own leprechaun trap for St. Patrick's Day and have already started discussing what materials they'll use for the task.

It's a sweet, well-written story with adorable illustrations, and I'm sure it will certainly remain one of our favorites even after March 17.

My husband and I wrote this book based on our family's St Patrick's Day traditions. Our house has been plagued by a leprechaun every March and our children have great fun trying new and different ways to catch him. Of course they never do! We hope this story inspires other children to make clever traps for the leprechauns who visit them on St Patrick's Day, and that the book brings lots of fun to all.

I always have to make a tough decision about out-of-print books. Although I love to introduce my children to older books, ones which I remember from my childhood (and I detest many modern books), there must have been SOME reason why the book went out of print. And maybe it won't be worth the hassle to track down a copy, or to buy a used library book which may be all scuffed up. If you feel that way, I have to tell you frankly, this book is definitely worth getting. Written by Janice, illustrated by Mariana (whoever they are), it is the adorable story of a bear who is so intent on accepting an invitation to Thanksgiving dinner that he asks his friends to wake him up from his hibernation so that he can go. They have to work hard to wake him up! At the end, they are all invited and everyone shares a dinner together. The best thing about this book is that it is perfect for introducing Thanksgiving to a young child. My daughter is 3 and doesn't remember Thanksgiving from last year but, thanks to several readings of this story (and I enjoyed every minute, it doesn't get old) she knew that it was a gathering of family and friends to celebrate togetherness and enjoy good foods. The book even told her exactly what to expect: turkey with chestnut stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top, and pumpkin pie. Personally, I think the cutest thing about this book is that the invitation he receives is from his friend Goldie (whether it is Goldilocks I can't say) and the illustrations are precious in that vintage 1960s way. This book is WELL WORTH hunting down and will doubtless become a Thanksgiving tradition in your home.

Little Bear can't wait for Thanksgiving, nor can readers.

This has been a family favorite for years. Little Bear is invited to eat Thanksgiving dinner. Because of hibernation he hasn't heard of it and his friends explain. They describe the 1st thanksgiving, and the mouth-watering table setting. Children can't help but develop an excitement for Thanksgiving as Little Bear does. A delightful book.

Bill Cosby tells a great story about surviving a crush
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-05
I remember Bill Cosby, before the hit television sitcom and even before Fat Albert was a Saturday morning staple. I remember the comedy albums and the stories about being a kid. Even though he was funny, very funny, there was such a sense of pathos when he talked about having his tonsils out, or having to share a bed with his brother. When you look at everything Bill Cosby has done, from getting his doctorate in Education to his television shows, he has never ever forgotten what it was like to be a kid. The truth of that statement is very much in evidence in "Super-Fine Valentine," one of Cosby's "Little Bill Books for Beginning Readers."

In "Super-Fine Valentine," Little Bill has developed a crush on Mia, a girl in his class. If that was not bad enough, his friends have noticed, his brother has found out, and even Mia appears to know what is going on. What will Little Bill do now that he is in love? Well, if you ever had the misfortune of being a young boy with a crush on a young girl (third grade, her name was Julia Garrow and she was the smartest girl in class), then you will recognize how much everything Little Bill goes through rings true. The going out of your way to walk by her house, trying to write the perfect card for Valentine's Day, and all the exquisite pain of being in love at an early age, are all here. In case Bill Cosby's story, which is illustrated by Varnete P. Honeywood, does not make it perfectly clear that a crush is something to be respected rather than a topic for teasing someone, there is a letter to parents by child psychiatry specialist Dr. Alvin Poussaint at the front of the book. What I liked best is that "Super-Fine Valentine" focuses on what Little Bill does and how he learns "it's good to tell people you like them." How does Mia feel about Little Bill? Well, we might have our suspicions, but that is not really important to the point of this book, which is another reason that I could not possible recommend it enough. What a wonderful book.

Wonderful! True to life.
