A Parent's Life Changes in an InstantReview Date: 2005-11-22
Kay Day faced this situation, to a much greater degree than many parents, but with a happier ending than some families get. She shares her story, with detail, humor, and the background of not only her own family history, but also the familiar hassles and concerns of a family move. I identified with the Day family's experiences and learned from the medical research the author did.
My favorite part of the book is the contribution of the patient's older sister, describing the impact of her sister's illness on her life and the conflicting emotions she experienced during that time. It was a forthright revelation that reminded me strongly of my feelings towards my younger siblings, a long time ago.
This is a great read, for young people and their loving parents.
mystery childhood illnessReview Date: 2005-07-01
The courage of both mother & daughter, who refused to give in to defeat, is the backbone of the book. It should bring encouragement to everyone who suffers from "undiagnosable" pain. Rebecca's "mystery illness" affects over 86,000 American children every year. Up to date information about treatment for such cases is given. If it saves even one child from enduring the year of horror & agony that Rebecca & her family lived through, KILLING EARL was well worth writing.

The LDS Grandparents' Idea BookReview Date: 2003-02-13
Grandparenting....the best ideas ever!Review Date: 2003-02-11
Fay A. Klingler's book, The LDS Grandparents' Idea Book, is a treasure trove of information and suggestions! It is a source of ideas that would take many years and many grandchildren to exhaust.
Ms. Klingler has compiled ideas from many sources and many people and come up with a "Grandparenting 101" manual. She uses graphics to illustrate many of the ideas that are so easy to copy or tailor and modify to individual needs.
One of my favorites is on page 80, "the paper sandwich," which illustrates and describes a charming, crafty, colored paper sandwich with Grandma and Grandpa as the bread and kisses, hugs, admiration, and smiles as the meat/cheese and fixin's. She suggests tucking a $5 bill inside, too. This is fun for a teen-ager or even college student as well as a young child.
On page 149 one of Ms. Klingler's contributors relates the story of geese flying in V-formation and how, "by flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock of geese adds at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird were to fly on its own." Then she relates that to families! It is a beautiful idea from a very caring grandparent.
Who knew there is a "I Want You to Be Happy Day" on March 3rd?
Ms. Klingler knows! In her section on Activities for a Specific Day or Month she lists a myriad of ideas for fun celebrations!
Even though the title suggests a limited audience of LDS or Mormon Church members, it is not a limiting list by any means.
Now 4 grandchildren later, I'm so glad I found Fay Klingler's Idea Book. It is 172 pages of ideas for being the best I can be during this absolutely wonderful stage of my life..."Grandma!"

Fun book, great idea! Review Date: 2008-03-07
It's a sweet, well-written story with adorable illustrations, and I'm sure it will certainly remain one of our favorites even after March 17.

Bill Cosby tells a great story about surviving a crushReview Date: 2002-02-05
In "Super-Fine Valentine," Little Bill has developed a crush on Mia, a girl in his class. If that was not bad enough, his friends have noticed, his brother has found out, and even Mia appears to know what is going on. What will Little Bill do now that he is in love? Well, if you ever had the misfortune of being a young boy with a crush on a young girl (third grade, her name was Julia Garrow and she was the smartest girl in class), then you will recognize how much everything Little Bill goes through rings true. The going out of your way to walk by her house, trying to write the perfect card for Valentine's Day, and all the exquisite pain of being in love at an early age, are all here. In case Bill Cosby's story, which is illustrated by Varnete P. Honeywood, does not make it perfectly clear that a crush is something to be respected rather than a topic for teasing someone, there is a letter to parents by child psychiatry specialist Dr. Alvin Poussaint at the front of the book. What I liked best is that "Super-Fine Valentine" focuses on what Little Bill does and how he learns "it's good to tell people you like them." How does Mia feel about Little Bill? Well, we might have our suspicions, but that is not really important to the point of this book, which is another reason that I could not possible recommend it enough. What a wonderful book.
Wonderful! True to life.Review Date: 1998-02-17
