I read this book once at a friend's house over 10 years ago and it has stuck with me all this time.

The story starts off with two children who wake up one morning and their mother has left, they assume to go to the store. The two kids go ice skating on the nearby lake and when they return home, they found their house inhabited with two ghost children being tormented by their abusive aunt. The two original kids decide they must need to help the ghost kids so they can find peace. I won't spoil it but it has a fantastic twist at the end and is a haunting tale. The ending may remind you of a hit movie but the book came first. With all the copies on sale for a penny, you can't ask for a better deal!

All Saints' Day - The Realistic Deep South
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-21
All Saints' Day is a moving story of people in south Louisiana--their lives, their loves, their hopes, and misfortunes. Although there is a common thread, each chapter is a self-contained tale. The descriptions of the people are poignant--there is a girl who, by the side of the road, cradles the head of a dead dog in her lap. It is thought provoking--the story of a man who can only be considered schizophrenic as he fears that man others around him are machine men (robots). And many other characters that are both strange and familiar, yet all are caught in the nexus of just trying to survive in a poor area.

The realism of All Saints' Day should be expected. The book was written by an author who grew up near Baton Rouge, within sight of the Mississippi River. His eye for detail insures that this book remains a favorite of readers for Southern literature.

Great writing, great story. Benoit's amazing debut novel says something important about the ways that every family lives and dies and keeps living, how people are remembered and forgotten, and how love (and hate, and callous indifference) work into this. The style, mixing English with Cajun French, gives a sense of immediacy that allows the reader to inhabit the tense world of Maringouin. The hopes characters have pinned on gambles such as bush-track horseracing and oil rigs are heartbreaking even as the details are unerring and fascinating. The texture created by the multiple points of view gives a full, round portrait of the Gidot and Bueche families, and offers a welcome counterpoint to outsiders' misguided notions of what life in Cajun southern Louisiana has really been like: here it is, honestly, with all its bad health and poverty and real tragedy. Best book I've read in years.

I like this book a lot. I wonder how it was made. It has a lot of cool lizards. Some of them are huge, some are small. A lot of the lizards have dark stripes. That is what I like about this book.

Great little book--reminds me of Jim Cherry's Loco for Lizards, another "laugh out loud funny" book that seriously informs while keeping the reader amused. I highly recommend them both.

A great story about the love of animals

The book is about a 9 yr old girl named Stella who helps her mother and aunt Anya in a variety of animal situations. She must help rescue a piglet from a well, perform surgery on a goldfish, help vaccinate cattle, treat a colt who was bitten by a rattlesnake and rescue wolf pups after Romeo, the Wolf Cubs father is killed by hunters. This is a book that keeps you interested with all the many things the girl and her family go through with the animals. It teaches many things about a variety of animals. It has such a compassionate depth from all the characters, it brings to heart an inner urgency to help the animals you come in contact with. It is enjoyable and very well written for all ages. I felt the content was a little much for the younger advanced reader, but it never would scare them.

I really liked this book, but it should be called 'Found Puppy.' In the beginning, Stella helps some horses out of a burning barn. Then, Stella isn't allowed to get her puppy out of her house when she evacuates. At her aunt's animal clinic, Stella finds a kitten. Stella falls in love with the kitten, but is very worried about her puppy.

This book shows the maximum that a young girlm can feel about any topic. Miss Costello wonderfuly shows the rush, tense feeling of a vetranary room. She draws in the reader with her supenceful words and exciting, seamingly, real life, drama of a young girl whos love for animals (of any kind) over thrwo anything and everything else in her life whether it be school, time or any thing else.

Stella finds a golden retriever who's been hit by a truck on her way to school. She sees that where he got killed there is a big bend in the road where people can't see too well, and that can cause many more animals their lives. Will Stella be able to get the bend in the road fixed before it's too late?

This has been a favorite of both my sons for a long time. The story is silly and sweet, and the illustrations fairly burst off the page. The end is a pleasant surprise and lesson in developing good interior dialogue.

I got this book for my kids from the library and then had to buy it . I also bought copies for all my friends with children. The art is striking and the way the author retells the creation story highlights the loving relationship between God the Father and God the Son. My kids love it and I think I love it even more! I would definitely recommend this book.

Father and Son in the Creation Story

This is an awe-inspiring retelling of the first story of the Bible - the creation story. The poetic text emphasizes the loving collaborative effort of Father and Son (God and Jesus) in bringing the universe into existence.

This is the only creation storybook that we have found that addresses the "us" in "Let US make man in OUR image." (Genesis 1:26), by acknowledging the presence of the Son at the time of creation.

The illustrations are beautifully artistic, thus taking children into the story. Our Christian Sunday school curriculum company for the Workshop Rotation Model likes this story so much that we have integrated it into one of our lessons.

Melissa Sweet packs vivid color and ample details into her illustrations. This makes for a great experience when sharing the book with a pre-reader. The background includes sailboats, wonderful interiors with vibrant colors and designs, and plenty of action demonstrated by the bears. Even the favorite stuffed toys are "reading". Fun to read and look at with your child.

Baby Bear is a little books lover! He wakes up in the morning wanting a story. He reads with all the members of his family all day long! When the day is over just what do you think ends his day? A bedtime story of course!

The pictures were sweet. They spread over the pages making this easy to read to several children at once.

My family could relate to the bear in the story! We love books all day long!

With a simple rhyming rhythm, and lots of different colors it's just perfect for my 19 month old. We like to read it right before nap or bedtime since it's short and has the pretty shiny foil. It keeps his attention and as a bonus the ending has an adorable Baby Strawberry going to bed too.

"Baby Strawberry's Rainbow Day" is a board-book from the new line of "baby" Strawberry Shortcake book releases. In this one, Baby Strawberry explores a rainbow of colors.

This book features five colors, in bright shiny foil. The colors are red, yellow, green, blue and purple. The overall illustrations and colors are a joy to look at. The text is simple, one sentence per page, but will teach kids about basic colors. In addition to Strawberry, Custard and Pupcake are also seen in this book.
