This is exactly the book my family needed. Reading "Arnie and his School Tools" to my children made them feel "normal". Giving it to the teachers to read to the class was the perfect start to improved classroom behavior. The teachers suddenly "got it", and the students who saw behaviors in themselves wanted Arnie's tools, too. The children who didn't understand why the Arnies in class needed to move suddenly became more empathetic.

A very powerful experience. A book I intend to give to each of my children's teachers at the beginning of every school year.

Jennifer Veenendall has done an amazing job at creating a wonderful hard covered cleverly illustrated book. I would highly recommend this for teachers who have students with autism integrated into their classroom. The book would educate typical peers on autism and the tools kids with autism find useful. The wonderful illustration would catch the eye of any young reader while teaching them valuable lessons about their peers with autism. Also, parents can share this with their childdren who have autism or sensory processing disorders to provide them a character whom they will understand and enjoy.

This would be a terrific gift for any lower elementary school teacher.

Written and illustrated by school-based occupational therapist Jennifer Veenendall, Arnie and His School Tools: Simple Sensory Solutions That Build Success is a children's picturebook about Arnie, a young boy with sensory modulation difficulties - that is, he's a "mover". His body needs to move, and his hands need to be busy, which makes it hard to sit still in school and pay attention to his teachers! What is a naturally restless boy to do? Fortunately, his parents and teachers instruct him in simple helpful strategies, including fidgets, chewy pencil toppers, earplugs, headphones, ball cushions, weighted vests, and more, as well as the use of natural physical movement to help keep his body calm and enable his mind to focus. Arnie and His School Tools is no ordinary picturebook; it's also a useful teaching aid for occupational therapists, teachers, and parents helping elementary children understand helpful basic sensory tools. "Sometimes I jump on our mini-trampoline, and at other times I jump and crash into our couch pillows. All these things help calm my body and my mind so I can get my homework done." Suggested discussion questions, a list of resources for children and parents, and helpful websites round out this enthusiastically recommended picturebook, especially for public and elementary school libraries.

My son had me read this book over and over again when he started preschool. He would point out things in the illustrations and chat about them. This is one of his favorite all-time books.

My two-and-a-half-year-old son loves this book! The text is refreshing--simple, yet joyful and instructional--a rare feat. The paintings of Teddy Bear's first day at preschool are colorful but not cartoonish, detailed but not pretentious. I highly recommend this book.

Perfect for the first day of school!

This book is unbelievable! My 17month old never sat through a book until this one. He loves it! When it is bedtime, I can read it 20 times and he would just want me to start over! It's quick and simple, and always puts a smile on my son's face.

"Baby Loves" by Michael Lawrence and Adrian Reynolds is based on the premise that "baby" loves Mommy and Daddy more than anything else in the world except, breakfast; and baby loves breakfast more than anything else in the world, except. . .slippers. . . teddy. . .kitty, well you get the story. Bright colors, large type, and big two-page illustrations are a plus, especially when reading to more than one child at a time. The illustrations are colorful and comical, but with just enough detail that I am certain the authors wanted to entertain mommies and daddies as much as their little ones. The book is quick to read, and your children will quickly pick up the pattern as they follow along with what baby loves next. The best books have "sappy" endings and this one is no exception. One small aside, this book is bound with so-called "toddler-proof" pages, which should more accurately be called "nearly toddler-proof" pages.(nothing a little tape can't handle) Highly recommended for a keeper or a gift.

My twenty-month old really likes this book. She rapidlylearned all the words of the baby's loves (grandma, sunshine, bathtime, etc.) and happily calls them out as we turn the appropriate page. We really whiz through it -- it's a good book to have handy when you only have time for a quick one. The bold illustrations are great.

I loved this book. If you have read Junie B. Jones, Amber Brown, Lucy Rose, Judy Moody or Clarice Bean you will love Mallory. She is funny and makes silly comments and sometimes goes a little over board. I am 11 and this book will make a high schooler LOL.You and other readers will enjoy this book. I will soon have all of the Mallory books and you could too. So get the book and enjoy this great book. Maybe you can read other books by the author Laurie Friedman. I'm very sure all of her book are as great as these books.

This story is so funny! Just when you think the worst has happened to Bertie, something else happens. Bertie doesn't let anything get him down, and he makes the best of his troubles, at that. Everyone who has had messy hair or a missing tooth on "Picture Day" will relate to Bertie's experience and cheer his indomitable spirit.

A great message for kids!

Angelica is making a present for her mom for mothers day but Chuckie dosen't have a mom but he had dreams of having one, but he can't give presents to a dream. Chuckie trys Spike to be a mom but he figures that won't work.

This brought me to tears!

this is a wonderful story in which each of the babies give their mommy a present... except for chucky. he finds a picture of his mommy, and thinks it is "booty-ful". he gives the picture to his daddy and it makes him sad, making chucky think he doesnt like the picture. chaz tries to explain as well as he can to his young son that the lady in the picture is his late mother but she still loves him very much.

the part that really got me was the end where a lady reads a poem written by chucky's mommy. she tells him that even though she is gone, she will always be near him. one part is something like "when you feel the warm wind gently kiss your face, that is me, i will always be near you." ~tears~ while the lady is reading the poem chucky is playing innocently, never to know his mother, making the moment even more touching.

This is a wonderful story. Most of the book is very cute and shows a lot of each baby's imagination. But there are a couple of sad parts too that could bring on the tears. For instance, it's happy when Chuckie finds his Mother's picture and realizes it's the lady in his dreams; but it's sad when he shows the picture to Chaz and Chaz becomes sad (Chuckie thinks his Daddy doesn't like the picture, and he says to Tommy "I thought it was a pretty picture"). Also, the poem his Mother left for Chuckie is sad, but happy as well because he knows his Mother is still all around him. I really like this book and the Mothers Day special of the same story, but sometimes I really have to prepare myself for it because I know what's coming.

James Herriot writes beautiful multi-layered stories which really engage the reader, and in this case the audience. This is one of his children's storys, which despite the shortness, is beautifully written.

As you may know, James Herriot was a country vet in the Yorkshire Dales in the North of England in the middle of the 20th century. His storys of eccentric families, and farmers have sold in the millions. His series of children's stories are equally rich and funny. This is the story of Bonny the clydesdale, and her owner. Herriot has been called out to Dale Close farm where the farmer has a problem with one of his horses. They go for a long and arduous walk to visit the horses, which Herriot finds difficult, but the farmer seems completely untired by. The horses are old, but in a beautiful valley, where the farmer has retired them. To Herriot's amazement, the farmer does the walk every day. They have been retired for 12 years, but because they worked so hard to help him establish the farm, he keeps them there ni retirement. Herriot suggests the farmer enters one of the horses in the Darrowby Fair that coming Saturday in the Pets class as they are clearly kept as pets now. The farmer sounds discouraging, but then, the following saturday he turns up at the fair......

This is a wonderful story and I guarantee it will move your heart to read it. The detail is extraodinary and evocative, and I am sometimes moved to tears by it when I read it.

The illustrations are pretty good - they could be richer, but overall, I just think this story is 110%. Something to really enjoy.

This is probly the best non-fiction book I've ever read. it's packed with information and the illustraitions are beautiful. In the back of the book, there's a "glossary of owls" with short essays of a few types of owls, containing their size, call, latin name, what they eat, etc. This book is definitly a must-have.

This is a great, easy to understand, thorough book on North American Owls. I have worked rehabilitating owls and in doing educational programs with non-releaseable owls for five years. I'm using this book as an educational tool, I have bought copies to share with other wildlife rehabilitators. If you love owls and want to learn more about them, this is a great source of knowledge, the art work is beautiful the text covers just about everything that a person could think to ask.
