The authors covered all aspects of startup from location and economics in your area to business plan examples. Showed implementation of their "flex-time" programming which is wonderful. I checked this book out of the library and two days later (after I finished it) I went out and bought it. It will be used over and over I am sure.

There are very, very few books on starting and operating a for-profit child care business (believe me, I have looked!). This one is a gem; very well written by a person who has been there. Her flexible time system is right-on, although I'm not sure I'd have the guts to implement it. Margins are thin in this business; this book should help you get all you can out of it.

readers will come away from this book well-informed!

Great book for beginners as well as those experienced in the world of childcare and preschool. Offers realistic information related to starting up a center. Especially strong in the areas of writing a business plan and attaining funding. I learned quite a bit from reading this book.

This is an excellent source book for anyone considering opening a child care center. It is comprehensive, well written and logically organised. The author covers every area of developing a center, from organisation of the space to conflict resolution to highlighting the ten most common mistakes in running a center. I would thoroughly recommend this book for anyone considering starting a business in child care.

Rabbit's New Rug by Judy Delton has lots of bright colors, and makes the book more appealing to children. With some words that the children might not know, it will make a great learning tool if parents read along with their children. Rabbit, an inhabitant of a forest, has just gotten a flower rug for his house. Rabbit is proud of his new rug, and invites his friends Fox and Owl to come and take a look at it. When they come over, Rabbit does not want his friends to step on his rug, or enjoy his gifts his friends had brought him in celebration. Later, another friend, Raccoon, comes and joins them and he loves Rabbit's new rug. The friends do not have that much fun admiring it, and so they leave. In a week, after Rabbit becomes bored and lonely, he invites his friends to a party on his new rug. Then they have the time of their lives. Morale of the story: Value friendship over nice things.

A cute story, bright pictures, and a great morale at the end, Rabbit's New Rug is a fabulous addition to a child's books.

This book is a good book for young readers. It is an easy reader with a good amount of text. This book will show children that material objects aren't as fun and loving as a good friend who cares about you. This book will change the way you think about how important your friends and family are.

This book is about a rabbit who got a new rug. His rug was the most beutiful rug that he had seen before. So rabbit decided to call up all of his friends to come over to see his new rug. But when they got there he wouldn't let anyone step on it so they had to stand against the wall. Everyone got tired of standing so they all left. So then for days rabbit would just stay at home and clean his rug. Soon rabbit realized that a rug isn't a friend and found out that he wasn't having any fun at all. So he decided to have a party with all of his friends.

This book was first introduced to me in a Children's Literature class and ever since I have loved it right along with my class and my own kids. The pictures are so welcoming and the text corresponds so well with the pictures. It is a great tool to help make text to real world connections. It is just fun to read it aloud.

"Red Rubber Boot Day" is a feast of color and poetry. This was my daughter's favorite book as a 3-year-old, and it is regularly read and enjoyed by us both several years later. The pictures are exuberant, and the text really does make you smell the rain! I have never seen this book in a bookstore so it would make a most delightful and surprising gift for a book lover.

I give Russ and the Almost Perfect Day a very positive evaluation in terms of inclusive children's literature. It describes an interesting series of events, centred on a character who happens to have a disability, but this disability is not the focus of the book. Russ is similar to other students in his interests, activities and problems. The storyline is simple yet interesting as it presents a wonderful school day for Russ. All children would love to imagine a fun filled day similar to his experience. He must make a difficult decision that other children can relate to, and several of his emotions are expressed through the colourful, appealing photographs on each page. There are no stereotypes or labels used, all settings are inclusive of someone with a disability, and all situations show Russ in valued roles, as an active and contributing individual. I highly recommend it as a valuable example of how inclusive children's literature should be written. It would be an asset to any school or home library.

This is just one in a series of lovely stories about the adventures of Russ. In this one, Russ is having an unbelievably amazing day. It seems nothing could go wrong, until he is faced with a challenging decision that could impact others in a big way. Through the book's photographs, we learn that Russ, an energetic and popular young boy, has Down syndrome. This book is a sensationally casual look at inclusion and kids will delight in this fun school! If only all schools could be as exciting as the one Russ goes to!

I have all three of the Day with Russ books and they all deserved the 5 star ratings I've given them but this one is my favorite. I appreciate the fact that Russ's DS is never mentioned in the book, it's just a fact. The pictures are beautiful and the story itself is lovely. I love the lesson Russ gets about doing the right thing and the fact that he is an example to his friend Kevin. I just wish that Janet Rickert would write more Russ books. Because my own son has DS I tend to look for books that feature children with it but the wonderful thing about the Russ books is that the stories are good, the pictures fun and Russ's DS is just part of who he is! I love it!

Kids will really connect with this book. Russ and his friends are so believable and likeable. The vibrant color photos practically pop off the page. What I love about this series is that it isn't specifically 'for' kids with Down syndrome--any reader will appreciate Russ' spunk and the story's message.

This book is superb. I happened to see it on the library shelf and I checked it out for my two year old daughter. She does not have Down Syndrome. She absolutely loves it, as do we. It is interesting, well-written, educational, and fun. It teaches some great lessons-- things are often not as bad as they seem; when you feel as though you have lemons, make lemonade; there are lots of ways to have fun; you don't need fancy toys to have a great time; nature is full of surprises. The length of the book and the pace of the book are just perfect for her. The photographs are terrific and give us a lot to talk about. I would recommend this book to all young children. It is simply charming! A great find!

Russ is a charming little boy who happens to have Down Syndrome. This tale, told in photos and text, tells about his day with Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa. The story works beautifully and Down Syndrome is never mentioned. Russ is just a little boy who happens to have Down Syndrome! Jane Rickert has written a simple, darling book about her own son and has let us know that he is just an ordinary boy who likes apple trees and surprises. Ms. Rickert read her story to children at an Inclusive Childcare Canter near her home. The children loved it and they still make it one of their favorites. It is read over and over again - the sure sign of a hit with the kids. This book points out the sameness between children, not the differences and that is incredibly important. I highly recommend this book for any child regardless of ability/disability.

I love the Day with Russ series. This is the first one of the series and it has a sweet, simple story. Russ is a little boy with Down Syndrome who wishes he had a swing in his back yard instead of an apple tree. When his grandparents come to visit they and his parents share a special time with Russ picking apples and making a pie and help him to appreciate the nice things about his apple tree. This is a lovely book with colorful photographs. Russ obviously has DS but it is never mentioned in the story. I can't begin to say how much that means to me as the mother of a DS child. These stories truly show the way children with DS are LIKE other children rather than dwelling on how they are different. What a great message! I highly recommend it for all children, especially those with DS or who may have a child with DS in their class at school. The books are hard cover with glossy photos and are very well constructed in addition to being terrific stories. I plan to donate all three Russ books to my son's classroom, they are exceptional books.

Saints for young readers tells about the life of a saint whose feast day it is that day. It is on the reading level of about a 3rd grader, though, with very few pictures in the book, it may take a 4th grader to be interested in it. These one to two page stories are enjoyable and about a variety of saints. As the back cover says, "In these books [IE. the two volumes which cover the year] you will meet saints from every nation and race, from centuries long past right down to recent times. You will come to know saintly kings and workers, queens and housemaids, popes and priests, nuns and religious brothers. They were doctors and farmers, soldiers and lawyers, mothers and fathers, teenagers and children. These great and humble men and women prayed and worked, and never gave up trusting in Jesus. You can be like them too." At the end of each story there is some way suggested that you can apply some principle of the saint's life into the daily lives of children.
If you are looking for picture books on saints you may want to read my reviews of over 30 books on the saints.

Short bios and wonderful ideas for living the virtues
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-28
The book has a saint for each day, with a biography that takes only a few minutes to read. After the biography, there is a point to reflect on regarding a virtue that the saint particularly excelled in or regarding a situation this saint encountered in his or her life.

One of our daughters started reading this out loud to her younger brother and sister in the evening after the lights went out and I love this tradition. It introduces the childern to the saints of our faith.

What I really like is that the reflecting points, from time to time, mention contemporary items like computers, videos, and stereos, so they are not staid. The suggestions are wonderful, instructing the reader on how to live a certain virtue and asking for the saint to help the reader with their daily struggle in this area or that area.

I have seen many "Saint of the Day" books for kids and this is the best set of books (Vols.1-2). Great for First Communion gifts.

Christian Heroes for Every Day

"Saints for Young Readers for Every Day" is an excellent two volume collection of short biographies of saints featuring at least one for each day of the year. Each entry contains some facts about the life as well as some details of the importance of his work as well as the timing and circumstances of his or her canonization. The entries are one to two pages in length. Many include an illustration of the saint. The whether the saints are among the very popular or the obscure, their stories are delightful.

Although this collection is skillfully written for children, it is of interest to adults too. For anyone who is around children this set is an excellent resource. I have used it on many occasions to acquaint my own children with our Christian heroes. Whether you are seeking information about a child's patron saint, the saint whose feast is on a child's birthday or just a chance to introduce a child to a saint's story, you will find what you seek in these books. In addition to our usage in the home, my wife has used them in her Parish School of Religion classes.

"Saints for Young Readers" is a wonderful set which deserves a place on the shelf of every Catholic elementary school as well as any Catholic home in which children are being educated in the faith.

The crowds gather around Jesus to hear his teaching. Illustrator, Chris Saunderson, has captured the feeling of the people in their facial expressions. As the morning wears on and moves into the late afternoon, there is a rumble of stomachs as the people become hungry. A young boy gives his food, five rolls and two fish. Jesus offers thanks for the food. As he breaks the bread and gives out the fish there is enough for everyone and twelve basketfuls left over left over. Stephanie Jeffs shares the story and action suggestions in ways that will the child remember sitting on the grass hearing Jesus, his prayer of thanksgiving and the miracle of feeding the crowds. Young readers and their parents will all feel that they have shared a picnic with Jesus and His followers.

The reason I choose SPOT'S Touch and Feel Day is because it seems to be a very good baby book. My son is nine months and he would love this book. It has lots of textures in it so that little kids can touch it and feel what it is saying. The colors are nice and bright so that the children can see the pictures. The words in this book are short so that the kids can under stand what we are saying.

After over two years, this is still one of my daughters favorite all time books. Our first copy was read to pieces (literally) She was a little over a year old when we first got it, and didn't understand the concept of interacting with the story...she just loved the pictures. However, then she got the hang of it...and was hooked. The muddy paw prints don't stay sticky very long, but otherwise this is a very durable book. The story is simple, with bold letters for introduction to reading and simple drawings which enhance interest and understanding. A great buy!

Spot's Touch and Feel Day is the perfect introductory book for an infant just beginning to master the use of his/her hands. The large cardboard pages feature bold type, bright colors, and fun textures and flaps that encourage touch. The simple story shares Spot's play and bedtime routine. The durable pages withstand typical infant punishments (chewing and pulling). It was the first book that my infant son really responded to and wanted to read over and over. Starting at six months he loved touching the different textures and lifting the cloth and paper flaps. Within a few weeks he would touch different parts of Spot on command, and gestured excitedly to the book whenever he saw it. We really enjoyed reading this book together (and still do a year later), and it started a wonderful routine of reading before bedtime.

We loved reading it together & we shared it with some friends from overseas so that they would know how American's celebrate St Patrick's Day. I'm actually buying the book again for my two younger children this year to give as a gift. They may be a little young for it now but I believe they will grow to love it like their older brother & I love the idea of reading it as part of our family holiday traditions. Really a great Gail Gibbons book. (My two year old really enjoys Gail Gibbons Thanksgiving book.)

Most or many of the stories like his banishing all of the snakes from Ireland are false. They are the evidence of exaggerated storytelling. Actually he was born in Britain in the fourth century. He was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders and transported to Ireland where he spent six years in captivity. He was guided by visions to become a missionary to convert the Irish to Christianity.

Actually, his family were not deeply religious, but most Irish practiced a pagan religion. This was changed due to the activities and beliefs of this saint. Spinning exciting tales to remember history has always been a part of Irish life. I always thought that my mother, Lettie Lane, was Irish. After seeing the PBS special, I am sure of it, though she did not have the lilting dialect, coming from the mountains of Union County. She died when I was seven. Alec was born on March 17. His brother Eric is a 711 child. It is thought that St. Patrick died on this date.

It gives a simple 2 page intro, then spends 7 pages about who Saint Patrick was, then 14 pages of all the ways people celebrate/symbols (church, leprechauns, shillelagh, harp, cards, sweets, flowers, plays, meal, parties, and parardes), then two pages on celebrating it in the US, and then 3 pages of legends about Saint Patrick. A great introduction for young children.
