My 18 month old daughter is in love with Dora! It's on at the babysitters and it has started this whole Dora frenzy in my house with her. Needless to say that my husband and I went out to buy her some books and videos. This book was one of them and she loves it. It's a cute book. It's a change from all of the normal settings you see Dora in.

Great Interactive Book

This book is sturdy and cushy, and it is fun to see Dora in a different setting.. the beach, decked out in a purple swimsuit and all. Many of the pages ask the child to point out objects, and my 16 month old daughter is becoming a pro. This book also incorporates a little bit of spanish. When Dora says "Adios" at the end, my daughter always starts waving. I recommend this book for babies and toddlers.

NOT JUST FOR DORA FANS!

MY 20 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER LOVES THIS BOOK! SHE DOESN'T SEEM TO LIKE THE DORA CARTOON (EXCEPT THE THEME SONG), BUT I THINK THAT SHE LIKES THIS BOOK BECAUSE IT IS INTERACTIVE. DORA ASKS QUESTIONS OF THE READER SUCH AS "...DO YOU SEE THE BLUE FISH?" AND I HAVE MY DAUGHTER POINT TO IT IN THE PICTURE BEFORE TURNING THE PAGE. AFTER SHE POINTED TO THE CORRECT FISH ONCE AND MOMMY APPLAUDED, SHE WAS HOOKED! THE GREAT THING FOR ME IS THERE ARE DIFFERENT COLORED FISH IN THE PICTURE, SO THE NEXT TIME THRU I CAN HAVE HER FIND THE ORANGE FISH, ETC. ON THE PAGES THAT DORA ISN'T ASKING THE READER A QUESTION, THERE ARE PLENTY OF OTHER DETAILS TO TALK ABOUT. THIS BOOK HASN'T REALLY GOTTEN "OLD" TO ME AFTER MANY READINGS, LIKE SOME BOOKS DO. WE JUST KEEP FINDING NEW DETAILS TO TALK ABOUT IN IT!

They're simple. They're informative. They're cheap. If your child is too young to read, they're perfectly good read-aloud books.

What more can you ask for when stocking your kid's library?

This book features a female police officer (a nice touch) going about her (mostly uneventful) daily routine. She does some emergency traffic direction, tells her nephew about the various ways cops get around, helps a kid get home, and captures an escaped bear.

The last one is a little unrealistic - I mean, how often do bears escape from the zoo, anyway? - but it's well-written enough that I can overlook that part.

Includes motorcycle cops and more!

My 2 year old is a huge fan of police and firefighters, but he especially loves motorcycle police. It is very hard to find any toys or books with motorcycle cops. I ordered this book hoping it would have at least a picture of one, and I wasn't disappointed! It briefly tells about and includes pictures for different kinds of police, including police on motorcycles, bikes and horses. The rest of the book is good, too. If you have a kid that's into police, this book would be a great addition to your collection!

Highly recommended for young readers!

Joey's Aunt Ann is a police officer and through her nephew's eyes the reader learns about a police officer's day, tools of the trade and all the different kinds of police officers there are. We even meet Joey's favorite police dog!

During Aunt Ann's day, she rescues a lost boy and even catches a bear who escaped from the zoo! The photographs are excellent, and the review of terminology with a picture dictionary is proof of the careful preparation that went into this volume.

I am an officer, and was thrilled to find a book featuring a female police officer. In one week it became my niece's favorite book, having me read it over and over to her. She recognized the pictures highlighting special words, and even recognizes the same things in real life. I thought her mom would scream when my niece's favorite word became "badge", and she pointed out every emergency vehicle she saw out on the roads when they went for drives. This book helped my niece become much more verbal, and helps show her that female officers are positive role models, just like me.

It can be a bit scary for kids when they get on an airplane for the first time. Author Dianna Brisco has done an incredible job of helping children embrace flying instead of fear it. Grab a copy of "The Day Marcus Flew" for any child you know who is going to be on an airplane for the first time...or if they just enjoy learning about flying and planes.

Inspiring and fun children's book.

Dianna L. Brisco has put together a child-friendly book on flying in an airplane. It will help a child with the unknowns of airplane flight. It is simply child entertainment as well. Every page is illustrated. Being a former teacher, I can see the teacher influence in the book.

This would be a great book for teachers (public, private, or Sunday school teachers) to use for inspiration toward having students make their own drawings about flying in an airplane. This is also a good book for any grandparent to provide a grandchild.

As a plus-plus, the book character, Marcus, sees out the window how small humans (including himself) really are and is concerned. His mother assures him that God knows and sees all, a loving lesson learned by Marcus on "The Day Marcus Flew."

Grandfather telling stories...

To enjoy listening to stories told by grandfather, you don't necessarily have to be a child! As a matter of fact, it is a life virtue to enjoy these stories told by Isaac Bashevis Singer, regardless of age. They are set in the now vanished Hassidic community of pre-II World War, but their moral content transcends time and space, and although they are soaked in Jewishness they equally appeal to the open-minded reader. Beware that out of the seventeen tales in this editon, 14 are included in "My Father's Court," by the same author.

I am Jewish, and I learned a lot from this book. I learned about life in Warsaw, and about the time period around World War I. It shows how that time compares to this, and how much more we have now than back then. Lots of people take electric lights for granted. This book shows what it was like to live through freezing weather, hunger, and stress about war.

I don't exactly like autobiographies, but this one really, really hit the spot!

Singer just has it. These vignettes of his childhood do not have the emotional power of his greatest stories but they are rich with life, insight and humor. And somehow he tells stories even when he is making simple descriptions of his early life. This work too tells the pain and poverty of his childhood and the difficulty of his parents' lives. It is too a tribute to a world - gone .

As well as the nearby worlds, as Zeu ventures into manhood he discovers the young girl Etys, and together they discover both one another and their familial heritage out among the far stretches of the universe. With it's fun fantasy and interesting storytelling, Day One is very highly recommended reading, especially for children on the verge of their own self-discovery.

pulled into this story line. Watching how young Zeu grows up from a child to manhood and his struggles/conflicts along the way as he tries to make his own trail within his family and his society-this story will make you want to read more. Recommend for all ages but mainly earlier teen years and up will understand the story. GOOD BOOK!

Day One is the story of one boy's journey into manhood suddenly intersecting with catastrophic, cataclysmic events. Zeu, a curious and adventurous boy, develops before our eyes as we watch him struggle with his mother's absence, battle to break free from his older brother's shadow, and make his first tentative forays into love.

Like Lois Lowry's The Giver, Day One brings us to a world with a mysterious history, unusual customs and an uncertain future. We journey along with Zeu as he quests to discover the origins of his people, and is forced to create new myths for a new world.

This book is about a fifth grade class that suddenly starts disappearing and only one student knows it. That girl's name was Julia. She ran and told the principal's secretary. When she went to her class everyone was there. How peculiar! She was astonished. So it kept on happening.

I think the author wanted to say that even if people aren't smart they can still help others to solve things.

I liked it because the mystery was interesting and the characters are funny.

Will Julia's entire class disappear forever?

The day the fifth grade disappeared is a mystery thriller written by American Author Terri Fields. The book was published in 1992 by Scholastic Inc. Although Terri is not a very famous author, she still continues on writing novels such as the Fourth graders don't believe in witches, which was a prize winning novel.

On the other hand, The day the fifth grade disappeared was probably set in U.S.A somtetime between the 90's. The story is mainly about a fifth grade girl named Julia who is determined to figure out whose causing the entire class disappear minute by minute! Luckily, her best friends Lori and Jeff are there to back her up in this mystery, after all three heads are better than one! Whose causing all this trouble? Is it Ms. Flannery whose always seems so suspiscious?, or is it Ms. Kendrick who seem to be so innocent?

Read the book to find out!

My son (a 4th grader) and I just finished reading this book together. He was not a very big fan of reading before, but after this book-he has discovered a new desire. This book was very exciting and captures the readers'attention from the first few pages until the very end. It has enough cliffhangers from chapter to chapter that my son couldn't wait to find out what would happen next! (We would only read a couple of chapters a night together.) I wanted to instill in him a deep love for reading and this book has certainly started him off in the right direction. I happened to pick up this book at a second hand store for 10 cents, but now I am on the look-out for more books by Terri Fields. Most of the stores I have asked told me that alot of her books are out-of-print.So, that is why I am looking here. I definitely recommend this book to any parent whose child is either needing to do a book report or may simply want a good book to read on their own!!
Terri Fields is an excellent writer and I appreciate her talent.

I believe there are many lessons for a young person to learn in this wonderful little book - courage, bravery, unselfishness, and the importance of keeping a promise. The mutual trust between the pelican and the boy is a key moment in a very good story, along with the fact that the boy is so intune with nature that he "heard" the pelican and was chosen by the pelican for a great adventure.

The young hero is a wonderful example for all of us to follow and the wise old pelican has words of wisdom for young and old alike. This book will quickly become a first choice bedtime story for you and your kids and will promote positive questions from the youngsters about the ocean, the coast, and my favorite shorebird, the pelican.

It is obviously fiction, but contains a lot of real information about the importance being good stewards of our environment and of the creatures we share it with. Informative without being "preachy," I recommend this for all school age children.

I first got this book from thr library to read to my children but I purchased it for myself. It is that entertaining. It has an inventive story line based on a visit with an average but somewhat unusual family. The illistrations are high quality, full of surprises, and reminicent of the Art-Deco world and Buc Rogers. Pictures and text each support one another and provide a new discovery with each read.

A very imaginative display of how every family is different.

Lucy Maud Montgomery has an incredible talent for bringing back the entire experience of childhood, transporting you back to the feelings, the sights, the sounds, and even the smells of days gone by. I was so transported and enjoyed every minute of it! The only sad thing about this book is that it ends. The good news is that you can read it again and re-experience the joy all over again!

This book containing The Story Girl, its sequel The Golden Road (the Disney series "Road to Avonlea" is based on these two works), and the unrelated Kilmeny of the
Orchard is a nice edition of three Lucy Maud Montgomery classics.

Copious reviews of all three works are available under their individual titles here on Amazon so I will just say that I recommend all three and this book would be an excellent gift for a young reader who enjoys fiction with a historical setting, "Anne" lovers particularly, should enjoy the two Story Girl titles.

It does seem a bit odd to group the more mature Kilmeny of the Orchard with the other two titles but there is nothing in "Kilmeny" that is unsuitable for a modern day younger reader.

This volume is comprised of three of L. M. Montgomery's classic stories - The Story Girl, The Golden Road, and Kilmeny of the Orchard. In one way, I'm not quite sure what "Kilmeny" is doing in the set, if you wanted to keep with the "Avonlea" theme, but on the other hand, it does the other stories no harm in being there.

This book was published with the cover picture from the Disney Channel series "Avonlea". I love the volume, and am sorry to see that it is currently out of print. It would have been nice to see if they had other compliation volumes.

This book take you right back to age ten and it'll resonate with you whether you live in the Projects or on Park Avenue. My Grandmother's Legs is one of my favorites because Medina's description of Deshawn's grandmother is practically identical to what my own would be. The death of his grandmother hits home with anyone who has ever lost a relative who was close to them. Only a true artist can capture that. Medina is superb!

I enjoyed this book. It gave a look at a young boy not living in a conventional household. It doesn't give into stereotypes regarding children from split homes. I like the fact that the story focuses on the important aspects of DeShawn's life. He tends to notice the little things rather than on the big picture. I like the way it is something that many kids are able to relate to. It isn't just for one group, one gender, or one race. Certain aspects of the story are relatable to anyone who reads the book. DeShawn is also a very relatable character. The reader feel drawn into the story and cannot wait to turn to the next page to see what will happen. The illustrations are also so tied into the story that a reader need not read the story, they could figure out what was going on through the pictures.

Any child would enjoy and learn from this book!

Mr. Medina's "DeShawn Days" captures what life looks like from the view of a child growing up in an urban and distinctly ethnic area. DeShawn is an African-American child, but this is only by coincidence. He describes his world from a universal perspective-- he sees and experiences both love, friendship, play, and family bond like any other kid would, except these experiences are juxtaposed against what can sometimes be a harsh and unforgiving landscape. Mr. Medina somehow presents just the right balance between both the difficult realities as well as the, yes, believe it or not, joys, both of which actually do exist in what some folks like to call "the ghetto." It's reading that I think kids like DeShawn will relate to, and other kids will learn, understand, and yes, enjoy.

R. Gregory Christie's energetic paintings celebrate De Shawn's world with sensitivity and passion. Bravo, this book is a gem.
