I think I was most delighted to learn that Ms.Cocca-Leffler dedicated this book to her sister after forgetting her birthday. I believe the story echoes the love and devotion to someone--what this book shows is that even when things do not go according to plan people still love you. It's charmingly written and full of passion and tenderness. Adorable.

Lynne Jones and Petra Mathers have portrayed a wonderful strategy, in this story, where the older child learns how to enjoy his special day and have his brother share in the activities. It is a very cute story. This would be an excellent book to share with an older child who is feeling that their younger sibling is being a pain, or with both siblings to show them how they can get along. I would highly recommend this story as a way to promote role play and family bonding.

It's My F---ing Review

SUMMARY: an unnamed, unmarried, thirtysomething female narrator takes the audience, via one chapter, through one year in her life. Every birthday, she analyzes her life, resolves to make changes, and vows to learn something new. Unfortunately, she can't seem to break the patterns of behavior with which she's been suffering for most of her life: bad boyfriends, bad sex, bad parental relationships. While not technically a memoir, this novel is too poignant and simply too REAL to be pure fiction.

WHY YOU'LL LIKE IT: True moments of hilarity abound throughout the text. I believe Markoe didn't name her protagonist because it allows the reader to mold the character into whatever they choose -- and good luck not identifying with most of her travails!

WHY YOU WON'T: There are numerous cringeworthy moments where you want to grab the narrator by her shoulders and shake some sense into her. I had several moments where I actually spoke, "What are you THINKING?! Stand up for yourself!" It can get frustrating, but that's what makes it real.

BOTTOM LINE: Not esoteric or life-changing, this novel is a quick and frothy read which will make you laugh, make you think, and make you appreciate how normal your family is (in comparison).

Laugh-Out-Loud Funny!

It is the narrator of Merrill Markoe's "It's My F---ing Birthday" 36th birthday. Her love life is shot to hell, she has hypercritical parents, and she can see 40 on the horizon. The unnamed narrator decides to write herself a letter each year on her birthday. They function as a sort of State of the Union address and the novel is structured around these letters. Containing 7 letters in all, we watch a woman struggle to find love and survive her bickering parents for just one night a year.

I loved this novel! I laughed aloud so many times as I was reading. It is a fairly short novel, just a little over 200 pages and it read very quickly. The narrator is instantly likeable and easy to relate to. Markoe has a knack for the Chick Lit genre and I will definitely be checking out some of her other work.

I was first introduced to the work of Roy Lictenstein by Steve Martin. Yes, THAT Steve Martin. Okay it was indirect, but still.

A few years back, some of Martin's private collection was on display at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. When I saw the Lictenstein in that collection, I was hooked. I love the colors, the lines, the texture... everything.

Each year, I go out of my way to find the Lictenstein calendar. It's not easy since most local retailers don't carry it. Fortunately, I can always count on Amazon.

This year, they've made an effort to match up the look and feel of the calendar to Roy's comic book style of pop art. The result is 12 months of fun.

Learning about Abraham Lincoln and his Birthday Holiday
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-09
"Lincoln's Birthday" is part of the "Best Holiday Books" series, which tells not only about the life of Abraham Lincoln but also how his birthday became a holiday, which was certainly interesting. Dennis Brindell Fradin sketches out Lincoln's life, including many of the most familiar stories about Honest Abe. The book does not go into detail on the Civil War, but provides a concise explanation that is appropriate for elementary school students. The last chapters not only explain how Lincoln's birthday became a holiday, but provides suggestions for how students can celebrate Lincoln's life in school from learning about Civil War songs like "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" to studying Lincoln in the context of Black History Month. Fradin even refers to a couple of well known movies about Lincoln, "Young Mr. Lincoln" and "Abe Lincoln in Illinois." "Lincoln's Birthday" is illustrated with photographs, paintings, drawings and etchings that provide a nice variety of styles, which should prove useful in inspiring young artists to come up with their own tribute's to the nation's 16th President. However, teachers should be prepared when students learn that once upon a time most states had two holidays in February honoring great Presidents and not just one.
