Bun wakes up and runs to Mom and Dad's bedroom to exclaim, "It's my birthday!" He helps Mom and Dad prepare for his party, opens his presents, and hosts the party. The text, simple and unpretentious, is easy for a young child to understand and relate to. We have literally hundreds of books, many of them highly reviewed and recommended, but this is one of the favorite choices of me and my daughter, now four, who has loved it since she was two.

The Caped 6th Grader, Happy Birthday Hero
By Nicki P.

My fantasy book is called The Caped 6th Grader, Happy Birthday Hero, by Zoe Quinn. The main character is named Zoe and she discovers she has super powers. She loves the Lightning Girl comic books because the girl can control the forces of the universe and she is passionate about what she believes. Later on she discovers she has powers too, but she doesn't know how to control them. Also her grandfather tells her he has powers too. Both powers include super speed and super strength. The main conflict is that she has to keep her secret identity from her parents and friends by making up excuses to go to her grandfather's store. Her parents have a big thing about honesty. Her dads a detective so it's hard for Zoey. She also has to study the super hero training manual without her parents seeing.

I liked that the author made the story unexpected. I like that she was descriptive so I could really picture it in my mind. Also it made me want to keep reading. I felt like I was in the book for 2 reasons. One, the story says that a grandfather told his granddaughter to lie and not tell her parents! Second I connected to the super heroes that are like Batman, Superman, since they also kept their identities secret and had to lie to their family and friends. It's definitely a great ending because Zoey finds out the purpose of her secret powers is to keep her friends, family, and neighbors safe from criminals, villains, and other bad stuff.
The author tells the story in first person. There is descriptive vocabulary. For example Zoey describes a feeling that was "like a lightning bolt whizzing through me and I found myself gripping the arms of the chair to force myself to stay in my seat." Another example is when she describes the tips of her toes vibrating inside her sneakers. The author uses words everyone can understand, and she wanted me to figure out the clues of what powers Zoey would have next. The author pretends Zoey's with her friend Howie when she is really going to her grandpa.

I rate this with an 8 out of 10 because it was descriptive and I found it interesting since Zoey was a super hero who couldn't tell her cover to anyone. Also I recommend this because it shows relationships between friends and people need to see what's happening in other peoples lives. It also shows how you may think a friend may go away but if they're a true friend they'll come back.

A ghost town on the road between Hope and Hopelessness
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-09
This is a dark comedy, written in the late 1950s and set somewhere in the middle of the author's home-state, Nebraska. It's also very much a mid-century view by an American author, somewhat still under the literary shadow of Faulkner, as well as the shadow of the Bomb. The characters are Nebraska-born and only vaguely aware that the world they grew up in no longer exists. Frontier violence long a thing of the past for them, they are troubled by the reemergence of violence in their midst -- particularly the killing spree of a young man (based loosely on Charles Starkweather), who murders 10 people before he is captured, and a high school student who runs down two others because he's "tired of being pushed around."

The book is told from the point of view of 10 characters, most of whom are members of an extended family who gather to observe the 90th birthday of the family patriarch. Born when the West was first settled, he has lived his whole life in a hotel along the railroad tracks of a prairie town, Lone Tree, which like the tree it's named after has been dead for many years. The old man is the only resident. His three grown daughters, their husbands, and offspring are joined by a boyhood friend of theirs and a young woman he has met along the road. They bicker, bring up old grievances, and carry on in their idiosyncracies like a cast of characters in a farcical 1950s sitcom.

Almost plotless, the novel interweaves the characters' various obsessions, revealed in their almost aimless conversations, quirky behavior, and the time-worn grooves of thought in their respective streams of consciousness. Morris, meanwhile, touches on many themes, a central one being the struggle to maintain hope in a world where so many events, large and small, discourage it. After converging for a day and moonlit night in this ghost town once full of frontier promise of growth and prosperity, the characters climb aboard a moth-eaten covered wagon and strike off westward to who knows what promised land.

Readers of contemporary authors like William Styron and Richard Yates will find a familiar resonance in this densely written, closely observed, slow-paced novel. I recommend it to anyone interested in America's postwar generation of writers who, like Jack Kerouac, saw through the sunny surface of those often complacent years to the shadows underneath.

Prejudice among neighbors -- with a happy ending
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-08
Yes, this book is about a birthday party and best friends. This book also tells the truth as it deals with the topic of prejudice among neighbors. It is an excellent, simple story about a little girl whose mother will not let her invite her best friend to her party because she is black. It is a simple story that helps to introduce the concept of prejudice and how it hurts the children who do not understand the differences, unless their parents teach it to them.

It's a Coloring Book!

This is a nice little version of Disney's Sleeping Beauty, but be aware - it is a coloring book. I thought I was buying a regular paperback Golden Book. Was I surprised! As far as coloring books go, it is a nice one. The story of Sleeping Beauty is told from beginning to end. There is a wide variety of things to color - animals, fairies, people. It's also fun because of the "shape" feature; it's not your usual rectangular book. Unfortunately for me, I wanted a pre-colored book to read to my daughter, but if you are looking for a coloring book, this is a nice one.

Teller's inspiration to others
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-27
Edward Teller was the founder of the American hydrogen bomb and a longtime controversial figure in the intersection of science and politics. One of the seminal figures in the American physics community. So this book celebrates his 80th birthday with a compendium of research papers.

Those of you interested in Teller's achievements may want to peruse these articles. While not written by Teller, they indicate how he provided inspiration to the many authors, and undoubtedly to others.

Also, ironically, the occasion was almost at the end of the Cold War. In retrospect, very apropos for Teller. For his career spanned this War, and he was one of the keynote participants.
