An Innovative Melding of Astrology and Numerology That Generates 366 Unique ProfilesReview Date: 2006-08-24
A New Age counselor for over 30 years, author Phyllis Vega has provided seekers with exciting, practical information in books like Power Tarot, Celtic Astrology, and Your Magickal Name. In What Your Birthday Reveals About You, Vega applies her extensive knowledge of numerology and astrology to create 366 distinct profiles for each day of the year.
A lively, up-to-date guide to self-awareness, this book is divided into three sections: Part One covers the 12 signs of the Zodiac, including a relevant mythological tale conveying the symbolic meaning of the sign, Character and Personality, and Relationships. Part two explains the nine basic numbers of numerology, and the profiles for each of these root numbers. Part three, the 366 birthdays of the year, gives a comprehensive reading for each birth date. Each birthday profile contains insight on fostering natural abilities in challenging in meaningful ways, as well as noteworthy birthdays and observances associated with that day.
Melding numerology and astrology, Vega paints 366 fascinating portraits that reveals secrets and highlights strengths, revealing accurate personality quirks, motivations, preferences, and paths to fulfillment.
My birthday is November 6, and I found my profile to be eerily accurate. Here is a portion of what Vega writes for this profile:
"The charming, gregarious, and seemingly easy-going outer façade of those celebrating birthdays today camouflages as a tougher, more intense inner nature. You actually are all that you seen--idealistic, judicious, fair-minded, and honorable. But there is a part of you that his shrewd, secretive, and mistrustful of the motives of others. Moreover, you refuse to settle for quick answers or superficial assessments. You want to believe in the goodness of humanity, so you optimistically hope for the best. However, you've seen too much of the dark side of human nature not to be prepared for the worst."
My husband, a fellow Scorpio, was born on October 27. Two plus seven equals nine, so his numerical vibration for that day is nine. However I've never found the nine profile to describe him accurately in ANY numerology text. Nines are usually characterized as ambitious go getters and compassionate crusaders, and Vega highlights this in her October 27 profile. As a result, his profile is mostly inaccurate.
However, in addition to the incredible accuracy of my own profile, my dad's profile (July 11) was also quite accurate. The author mentions how these ones side step conflict with aplomb and make great managers. My Dad has served as a manager in several jobs, and he does indeed retreat into his shell when conflict arises on the home front.
At 479 pages, What Your Birthday Reveals About You brims with mythos, symbolism, personality traits, compatibility issues, sticking points, and more. Readers only need to know the day and month of birth to access amusing and often intriguing profiles of friends and loved ones. While this book may not be a 100% accurate manual (what book on human personality CAN be?), it is thorough, engaging, and informative. What Your Birthday Reveals About You would be a great ice-breaker at parties and would no doubt provide some interesting fodder at family reunions and gatherings!

This book has been reprinted with a new title!Review Date: 2001-11-28
It is a cute book, with another nice moral: Angelina has a bicycling accident which ruins her old bike, then spends the week working to earn money to purchase a new one. All her friends and family see how hard she has worked and pitch in to buy the bike and give it to her as a birthday surprise.

More Pop-Up than Story, but Fascinating for Your Child!Review Date: 2001-02-25
The story is the weak part of this book. I graded the book down to reflect this weakness, although I thought the book's design and use of pop-ups are terrific.
To put all of those pop-ups together, the scenes had to change a lot. The book opens (pun intended) with Hilda Hippo reading her letter from Lowly Worm to find that she's been invited to his birthday party. To go to the party, she takes a bus to the train station. On the train, she has a fine meal. The train arrives at the dock where she boards an ocean liner. After she debarks, she drives in a Hippomobile at an airport. There, she gets a ride in Rudolf von Flugel's private plane. The last page describes what happens when Rudolf and she arrive at the party.
The travel process doesn't make much sense, so you'll just have to encourage your child to laugh at the silliness and enjoy it. The story only progresses on pages 1, 11, and 12.
Here's how the book is designed. Each time you open a page, you are looking at a giant pop-up scene that fills half the area (and blocks out the back, which you cannot see). The pop-ups are all over the page, so there are many different items. In addition, windows and other items to manipulate are everywhere, with some on the pop-ups and some not. After you have read all of the pop-ups facing one way, you turn the book upside down (from your original perspective) and read it going the other way.
In the end, Lowly Worm says, "Why, this is the best birthday ever." I suspect that you and your child will be saying that this is the best pop-up book ever.
Such a large and complicated pop-up book is undoubtedly going to get heavy use. Some parts will be torn and rendered unusable. You should plan to reinforce any parts you see starting to wear as soon as that happens. These are cardboard items, so Super Glue and transparent tape work well. If you think your child may want to have a fairly pristine copy to treasure for future generations, you could buy more than one and store one of them away for when your child is physically easier on books.
If your child likes this book, I also suggest getting other interactive books for your child. My four children all went through many copies of Pat the Bunny as their starting point for "touch and see" books.
Another good activity to use with your child is to play plenty of peek-a-boo starting before age one. Pop-up books are all about peek-a-boo, and allow you to continue the wonderful fun!

Unique, understated hispanic birthday celebrationReview Date: 2008-02-12
Girls ages 5-7 should enjoy this book. It's 2nd grade reading level, but short enough that it could be read to a younger child in under 15 minutes. Some words are in Spanish such as anos, noventa, bizcochos, and hierbabuena, but the meanings are easily decipherable by non-Spanish speaking readers.
A Special Basket of a Book for Little OnesReview Date: 2000-01-24
At the same time, I became angry because I had never read a picture book and much less a young adult novel by a relevant author of my ethnic group. Why hadn't anyone offered such children's books to me when I was a young boy coming of age in Magnolia, the East side barrio of Houston? Nevertheless, I hugged the book and read it again and again in the company of other young(er) Latinas and Latinos in Houston and San Antonio public schools. Who would have thought?
Since then, I have shared the book in English and Spanish, too, with educators and readers. So many readers--of all ages and colors--have met the young girl named Cecilia, the silly cat named Chica, and her loving aunt. An advocate for children, Pat Mora's picture books continue to share the written word and celebrate the narrative of many Latinas and Latinos living in the United States. Muchisimas gracias, Pat Mora.

A thrill story for my babyReview Date: 2007-07-02
The colors are wonderful, the pictures are large and the book was succesful in attracting the attention of my son right till the end.
If you don't want your kid to ask you to read a story over and over in the same day, then don't buy this book;)

A dear, sweet book about being happy with what you haveReview Date: 2002-05-28
Deciding that Rabbit's hole is just a mite dark, Hedgehog bottles up a bunch of moonlight. Simultaneously, Rabbit worries that Hedgehog might be bothered by the sunlight while sleeping out in the open--so he packs up a mossy box of darkness. Of course the pals are disappointed when they open their gifts, but they later figure out on their own the good wishes behind each gift--and the best way to put the gifts to real, everyday use.
Any small child can begin to learn from this book the secret of choosing to be happy with what you have, instead of worrying about what you don't have, and parents and kids alike will get a kick out of Chris Riddell's vivid illustrations.

The Soul of GrowingReview Date: 2003-05-08
When one reads a Hoffman book one must be prepared to think deeply and to consider the well spring of your life. Every selection offers a taste of wisdom. Practicality is clearly stated and spirituality too. The Creative Spirit of Life can be seen hidden deeply in the words and pages of this splendid gift book.
If one wants to turn "Graduation Day" into a spiritual event that addresses the inmost heat and soul of a person,,,then this book is a true gift to the soul of the graduate.
It would be a wise "graduate" that considered the meaning of this marvelous little book and it would be a wise SOUL that offered this treasure as a gift to a graduate. I recomend it.
