Birthdays Books

This is a lovely book, with the birthdays of authors, a well-chosen quotation for each day (by an author born that day) as well as a lavish selection of art with a literary theme. I've had my copy for years (and am pleased to be able to buy another as a present for a friend charmed by my copy). There is a real pleasure as you populate the pages with your own friends' and family birthdays, read the relevant quotation and see who else was born that day. In an age of electronic reminders, this is the perfect way to remember birthdays away from the computer... A simple idea, charmingly executed.

Awarded the first Pulitzer Prize for U.S. History in 1917. The seven essays in this book are based on public addresses given by J.J. Jusserand, who was the French Ambassador to the U.S. (1902 - 1925), friend of Presidents and well known author. On the eve of the First World War, Jusserand's speeches focused on the close relations of the two countries since the American Revolution. The essays (Rochambeau and the French in America, Major L'Enfant and the Federal City, Washington and the French, Abraham Lincoln, The Franklin Medal, On Lafayette's Birthday and From War to Peace) all share a common theme - that France and America "have been of help to one another on more than one occasion, and will doubtless be so again in the future". It is propaganda but good propaganda (in both meanings of the word "good"). An interesting read, light on the footnotes, and provides insight into the origin of a still important international relationship. For example, in the first essay, he wrestles with explaining to somewhat cynical American audiences why a French monarch would have supported a democratic revolution. His explanation focuses on the character of the individuals involved especially Rochambeau and Washington. These two leaders, on the basis of a series of conversations during the war, moved from distrust to cooperation to friendship. Much of Jusserand's writing is based on then unpublished documents. Please note that the original edition only contained the first five essays. The last two were added in the 1919 edition. In summary: An excellent read!

I think it's a shame no one has reviewed this great book so far, so here goes:
We borrowed this book from the library and my son couldn't have enough of it so I bought it on Amazon. He simply loves books and trucks and this is one of his favorites. I have to animate it a little for him as I read (like, we pretend we open the door and put the balloons in, he makes the truck go and so on...) and he wants us to read it over and over again. He needs my help to fit the truck puzzle piece on every page but since he believes he does it all by himself it thrills him to make the truck stop and go at each shop and at his house with all the goodies displayed (truck puzzle flips over on last page) in the end :)!

THIS BOOK FILLED MY HEART TO THE TOP AS IF IT WERE TO POP!!ARI HILL IS A GREAT WRITER AND EXPLANS WITH LOTS OF DETALE.I RECOMEND THIS BOOK FOR AGES 4-7.XAVIER IS DELIGHTFUL AND FUNNEY!!!!!!!!!

This book compares mightily to the "Everything you ever wanted to know about Astrology" book. A book that I wouldn't be without in my collection. Definately a conversation opener, and party favorite. I keep it on the coffee table and am buying both my children one for their birthdays! Even if you don't buy the astrology business, the numerology and tarot comparisons given are definately worth browsing.

You have to love Cam Jansen. When you're a kid, you read all of these stories about magic powers, mystery, and adventure. But everyone tells you magic can't exist. Cam Jansen manages to solve every case without the use of magic... she's a real girl. That's what makes her special and what makes you want to red more and more. Cam Jansen is a real kid superhero, and the thought that a person like her could actually exist... makes her the best kid detective ever! Our family loves Cam Jansen!

This wonderful book that is a part of the Christmas in My Heart Volumes is unique in that the stories were chosen with children specifically in mind. It is a gift book with heirloom qualities. The special details are a pleasure to behold and there are pages for entries of special Christmas memories, activities, scriptures and photos etc. It is a lovely book to share with loved ones and pass down to children and grandchildren. Delightful!

I just want to say that the thing I loved about this book was the illustrations. I LOVED how so many women were depicted carrying their babies around in various slings. Such a good message wrapped up in a sweet story.

Pat Cummings has created a great story with expressive and vibrant pictures. I especially liked the thought from Alex's father as he tells why he couldn't stay angry. This is a great way to help kids see through the anger and look at what is really bothering them and learning to deal with it. I teach 2nd grade and this book is right on their level.

The Nicki Holland Mysteries by Angela E. Hunt are a powerful blend of suspense and character lessons. Hard to put down, yet easy to read, these books are excellent for the most reluctant young reader. Even the advanced reader will find it difficult to put these stories down until finished. The mixture of mystery and moral issues combine to make these books not only entertaining but also thought provoking where traditional values are concerned. Well done, Ms. Hunt
