I bought this book in 1988 when my oldest son was three. I had no idea what to do at a birthday party other than to serve cake! It contains "themed" parties but also has sections on recipes, games, and activities to do for each appropriate age group. For instance, it says that 5-year-olds generally do not like to play "win or lose" games, so this book has many suggestions for games that do not leave anyone crying because he has lost a game. EXCELLENT -- the games are great, and the kids have fun and are happy. I now have three children, and the best suggestion that I've found that is a hit is the scavenger hunt. However many children attend the party determines the number of "notes." Each child reads a note that will lead him to the next note and eventually the treasure. Kids absolutely go wild over this! This book makes planning a home birthday party not only simple but fun. My kids' friends always leave saying that this [particular] birthday party was one of the most fun they've ever attended! The games spark the imagination yet more importantly, are FUN for kids. This book has made my life as parent of a birthday child much, much easier. I sincerely highly recommend it!

I have treasured this book for years and am now sending it to my grandson prior to his 3rd birthday. The illustrations and story line are simple and easy to follow. These is mounting suspense, even some anxiety as to whether ....well, buy the book. You will treasure it for years also and save it for your grandchildren.

In addition to chapters on getting started, working with kids, business basics, direct marketing and publicity/advertising/materials/ agencies, there are separate discussions of magic, clowning, storytelling, puppetry, face painting, catering and special theme parties and party games. The authors (seven in all) are experienced birthday party entertainers. Hal Diamond, a full-time Washington area magician who wrote a monthly column in Laugh Makers magazine for many years, largely was responsible for the pages on magic. Steve Kissel, who sponsors annual Comedy College conventions, contributed to the balloon figures chapter. They advised on getting the business various marketing strategies while Diamond covered direct marketing. You get a wealth of solid information: a sample telephone conversation with a prospective client, why you shouldn't arrive ahead of your stated time, what to do during the party anad how to get paid, including a sample contract. There are instructions for constructing some props. Children's entertainers, as well as those who aspire to enter the field, will benefit from the business and performing suggestions. Highly recommended.

Sarah is invited to Lucy's birthday party. Sarah enthusiastically joins in the birthday games with the hope of winning one of the prizes. However, as hard as Sarah tries, she just cannot seem to win any of the games. As the games continue, Sarah's attitude sours towards the winners, the prizes and the whole party. Eventually Sarah learns the lesson of what it means to win and the need for thanks as part of winning. The illustrations are very festive. This is a great little story for all ages.

After I read them (the Young Cousins Mysteries books--another one is called SNEAKY THIEF, about a ferrett, which he also loves), he can then read them by himself with just a little bit of help from me.

AND THEN--he is off and flying!! He reads them over and over. He really likes the 3 cousins. His favorite is Timothy, I think.

This book is so endearing and perfect for children who love the snow or have a birthday in the Winter. All of the characters are so relateable. Children and adults alike will love this book! It sends a beautiful message and has a perfect ending!

A Birthday Surprise is a great book for the birthday girl or boy! We bought this book for our daughter's first birthday and she enjoys flipping through the pages while watching Bear on tv or before bedtime.

Not only does A Birthday Surprise have beautiful brightly colored pages but it also comes with some bitrhday fun stickers. The story follows a birthday party in the Big Blue House from the begining to the end and shows kids all the fun that the birthday boy or girl has and all the fun everyone else has too.

as a kid I was fascinated by the birthday parties that were thrown for me every year. My mom bought this for me before my 7th birthday and I fell in love with the watercolour illustrations of the characters, the cake and balloons and gifts and so forth. It shows you how to prepare for a birthday party and what you do at one. It was also exciting how her dad and brother went to the toy store to pick out buttercup's presents and how they were baking a chocolate cake.

This is a gift to give a woman. My best friend gave me this book. It made me feel so very loved! The book is full of praise, fun, and happy wishes. I'd recommend it for teens on up. It is hip, joyful, sassy and fun. What an absolutely amazing alternative to a greeting card. This book is like a greeting card that says all the fun things you can't include in just one card.
