My son enjoyed reading the story and the math component as well. It is easy enough for a beginning reader, and yet it can keep their attention as well.

Every kindergarten or primary school teacher, especially in low income areas, should play this recording as a "present" to the child having a birthday. What a wonderful listening treat that instills self-value while bringing so much enjoyment. It can never be played too often. Hans Conried's performance cannot be topped.

I purchased this book for my sons first birthday and he just loved it. It had many vibrant colors and lots of textures he could rub his fingers on.

Bold and sturdy book celebrating a great day!

Bright and colorful pages make this book loads of fun for any little one's special day. Elmo celebrates his birthday with the whole Sesame Street gang from Bert and Ernie to Zoe and Cookie Monster. Each page has a touch and feel texture, i.e. Elmo's nose is soft and velvety, Ernie's box has "straw" inside. The pages are large and sturdy, a great board book to have in your child's library or give as a birthday gift to a Sesame Street fan!

Finding warmth on a cold day in Point Hope, Alaska

Review Date: 2008-03-16
Young Eeka lives in Point Hope, Alaska, well above the Arctic Circle where there is little daylight during the winter months. It's her birthday and Eeka is hoping that her mother may have found the right fur for the newly made velveteen parka that her mother has just made for her. However, with the coming of a storm, her attention moves towards the safety of her father who may be caught in the great winter storm that has developed while checking his traps. From Eeka escorting her younger cousin home from school, to the stories of survival and legend told by Eeka's grandfather, young (and older) readers will be introduced to a bit of Eskimo culture. Lastly, Glo Coalson's lovely and descriptive illustrations are integral to the book.

Note: There exist questions concerning the appropriateness of usage of the term "Eskimo." However, this excellent story may lead to greater exploration of the cultures of various indignoues peoples of Alaska.

A Well Done Alaskan Children's Book!

A very well-written book, by an Alaskan, about an Eskimo girl. The story, which takes place in a single day, is woven throughout with the old and new ways of Eskimo Life. We follow Eeka as she fights the wind on her way home from school, shops at the brand-new store with her mother, and listens to her grandfather tell of big storms of the past. When the party begins & the guests arrive, there is caribou soup, delicious fish, laughter & presents and cakes. A very well-done Alaskan children's book!

As a caseworker/mother/soon to be teacher, I found this book to be well-written for parents and children to share. The examples are realistic to a child's experience of uncontrolled anger, including feelings associated with not taking responsibility like loss of friends, getting yelled at, etc. It is written in a non-judgemental way yet provides helpful suggestions on how to control anger. I plan to use this in practice and at home!

Insight, at last!

The title really sums it up. Eddie learns the significance of accepting responsibility. We really liked this. My son especially loved the second part, Why Should i? It's Not My Birthday, where he could be involved in solutions. This is a cool book.

A Farmer Boy Birthday Review

This story reflects the way a birthday boy growing up on a farm in the late 1800's might celebrate his birthday. The editor has done an excellent job of taking a short story from within Laura Ingalls Wilder's original book FARMER BOY and making it a short story for youngsters. The pictures are appealing and the story stays focused. I wish the publishers would print another edition of the book. All the stories we have read from the "My First Little House Books" have been thoroughly enjoyed by my family. We often give copies as gifts to other children and we borrow the copies we can't get from the library.

Another winner for the series.

This is another great story in the Little House series. This one is about Almanzo and his life on the farm when he was a young boy. The day begins like any other but ends with a special gift towards "man-hood" for his birthday. My pre-school children love all the Little House books, but this one is particularly loved and read over and over again. The story also teaches selflessness with a surprise at the end.

true diversity - enneagram types - exhibited in children's story
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-13
The Enneagram Made Easy: Discover the 9 Types of People by Renee Baron & Elizabeth Wagele is my favorite enneagram book i am a very visually-oriented person & the generous salting of witty pictures throughout along with to-the-point profiles & helpful hints for each type is just excellent. Wagele has gone solo on several more books - all that i have read are worth your time (i haven't read the beethoven piano sonatas one).

"Finding the Birthday Cake" by Wagele could be subtitled "The Enneagram Made Even Easier - for Children". it tells a story that demonstrates the concerns & contributions of each enneagram type with colorful illustrations.

i should resent it since it only gives my type - 7 - two pages in the main story, turns us into a herd - all the rest are individuals - & makes us sound like frivolous folk indeed - but i don't.

warning: because elizabeth's books are all square (or so it seems) i assumed this would have the same heft as the others - it doesn't at 48 pages, as is reasonable - now that i think of it - in a children's book.

It's here at last!!

Liz Wagele has done it again! Her adaptation of the Enneagram for young children is a great way to introduce this ancient and universal wisdom to your children, grandchildren, and to your classroom students. She has woven the characteristics of the nine Enneagram (Greek for NINE and DRAWING) types into a charming, cleverly illustrated story of nine different animals preparing for a birthday party. While helping the serious and "perfect" Walter One search for the lost birthday cake, they demonstrate their particular types.

The defining characteristics of the types are highlighted by each animal's hopes for the birthday party. Walter ONE hoped for the most PERFECT; Tina TWO for the FRIENDLIEST; Timmy THREE for the most SUCCESSFUL; Franny FOUR for the most SPECIAL; Freddy FIVE for the most INTERESTING; Stevie SIX for the SAFEST; SEVENs for the most FUN; EIGHTs for the most EXUBERANT; and NINEs for the most MELLOW party.

The search for the birthday cake is fun and engaging while it introduces children to the NINE TYPES OF KIDS, each with special gifts. When kids compare themselves to others, which they inevitably do, they now have this template of different types to help them understand why we don't all have the same needs or reactions. They can begin to understand why some of us are naturally fearful, others bold; some of us are studious while others are adventurous; and why some of us are easily angered and others very mellow.

In addition to the charming story and its lessons for children, this book includes a section with tips for parents and teachers about using the Enneagram, and simple checklists for each of the types to help parents and kids figure themselves out. This book, a major contribution to the field, gives parents and teachers an engaging tool to use with children from preschool through elementary grades. Parents and teachers can better understand their children, while children learn to identify and appreciate the nine different types of people. I'm sending a copy of Finding the Birthday Cake to all the children in our extended family and encouraging their parents to get Liz Wagele's other Enneagram books for additional information and support.

"Franklin Says I Love You" is one of the final releases of the original "Franklin" books by Paulette Bourgeois and Brenda Clark and it's definitely one of the sweetest. This book is about Franklin searching for the perfect gift for his Mom's birthday.

Franklin loves his Mom. She plays catch with him and reads him two stories every night before bed, even when she's tired. So Franklin really wants to do something special for his Mom.

You'll admire the sweetness of this story as Franklin finds the best gift of all. The illustrations are brightly colored and richly detailed. Almost all are full-page.

*****My 2 year old daughter can't sleep without hearing this book before bedtime! It was my eldest book, and this book has sparked her interest in Franklin so much that we own almost all of them now. It is a great story and at the end when Franklin tells his mother he loves her she tells me she loves me too. I would reccomend this book to anyone. I enjoy it as much as she does. You have got to check this book out!*****

Best children's book yet

This is the best children's book I have seen to date. It is the perfect combination of text to picture ratio, theme repetition, and familiar animals, with the opportunity for sound effects/creativity in story reading, that keeps kids one to six years old enthralled. Even 18 month olds will start reciting the catch phrase, "Gotcha!", along with you. A definite winner.

A fun slapstick frolic as Bertha chases a beastly black fly. The words are fun and playful, the illustrations happy and well-realised, fully integrated into the story. In the best picture books the illustrations ARE part of the story, conveying much of the plot, motivations, and expressiveness.

This book is one of those. A lot of fun for shared reading aloud, or independent early reading.

Winnie the Pooh's The Grand and Wonderful Day is about how Pooh wakes up and forgets something really important that was going on that day. He walks to all of his friends house's, Piglet, Rabbit, Eyeore but they were all gone so he decides to go to Christopher Robins house to see if he is home. I think that this book is good fer ages 12 and under.

This was a favorite of my son and I when he was little. It's predicated on two mysteries: What "grand and wonderful thing" is going to happen today, and just why are Pooh's friends all away when he visits them? The text is very Pooh-oriented ("Although the honey was yummy in Pooh's tummy, it did nothing to jog his memory".... "being a bear of very little brain"... and a song that ends, "rum tiddly tiddly tum,") and the whole book has a ring of authenticity. There's even a mention of the mildly scary "heffalumps and woozles." All turns out well: "...I just remembered that no bear ever had such grand and wonderful friends." The book has 25 pages, with simple, uncluttered pictures on each page.
