This book is not only beautiful to look at but also to read and listen to. The words are inspiring and has something to make each child feel special. The illustrations are so vibrant and colorful, but uncomplicated so that it is easy for a child to appreciate and enjoy. This book is perfect for a birthday or shower gift. I have a few teacher friends and I will be recommending this to them for their classes, to celebrate their students birthday months.

Kipper decides to get rid of his smelly old blanket, threadbare toy rabbit and soggy ball and bone, only to discover that they are what makes his basket so special and comfortable. My 18 month old daughter takes great pleasure in Kipper's attempts at imitating ducks sleeping on one leg; wrens nesting in a garden pot; squirrels building stick nests; etc. which all end in failure of course! The simple yet lively text holds even the youngest of attention spans and Mick Inkpen's humorous pictures are a joy for children and adults alike.

Kipper is a pudgy, brown and white dog, with a twist to his smile. He decides to clean out his dog bed. He learns that by making changes of what is around him, he finds that a new change, makes a big change in how he feels.

Kipper tries several new and different places to hang out. By trying to be where other critters live, Kipper finds he is just not comfortable with those new changes, and he goes back to his messy dog bed, that he had in the first place.

Kipper learned that he really cared about what he had in the first place! There are 22 cute animated large illustrations. Kipper is a smart dog to get to know!

Wonderful, fun read-aloud for babies.

We first checked this out of the library and it was so wonderful that I requested it by name as a Christmas gift from family. I agree with everything that's been said here--this book is a treasure!

Little Miss Muffett's Count-Along Surprise is GREAT!

Review Date: 2005-06-07
Let me begin by saying they have got the age range wrong. I think any child 5 and under would enjoy this book. (My eldest just turned 5 and she certainly likes it.) The artwork is colorful and pleasant and as you turn the pages the pictures become increasingly dense with added characters and action. Certainly there is enough activity to keep older children occupied. And because of the repetitiveness they might even *read* it themselves.

We adore this book. It has humor and warmth and it extends the old short rhyme with an even better story. In this version, Little Miss Muffett's spider doesn't chase her away, instead he asks her to stay. Then come lemurs with streamers, magpies with bowties, foxes with boxes, pussycats with partyhats, poodles with oodles of noodles, bears with chairs, puffins with muffins, gibbons with ribbons and crocodiles with 10 greedy smiles. But to what end? Surprise! It's a birthday party.

There is so much to this book. It teaches counting and rhyming. It introduces animals that are not typical in young children's' reading: puffins, lemurs and gibbons. For my children, it elicited in them the desire to memorize the poem (it was so much fun). To me this indicates that they are learning to love literature and reading.

I think it would make a great birthday gift, but don't buy it just for that. Think of all that your child could learn.

Well worth the purchase

...I have seen quite a few books cross my children's hands. Little Miss Muffet's Count Along Surprise was an immediate hit with all. They read it and reread it aloud to each other constantly. The imaginative words are cleverly knit together and flow with an ingenious rhythm almost completely absent in much of modern children's monosyllabic literature. It is a PLEASURE to hear--even over and over.

The illustrations are imaginative and full of vibrant color and action. They ably embrace the counting element of the book but more importantly, I think, they appeal to children's taste for inventive combinations of related bits of information: "Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet, eating her curds and whey, when along came three magpies with taffeta bow-ties and silk vests of very pale grey." Or, "Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet, eating her curds and whey, when along came nine gibbons with balloons tied with ribbons and bananas arranged on a tray."...

Fantastic Book for Children

This book was a huge surprise: it has everything in it a great children's book must have. The elements found in this book include:

1. Counting. My son greatly enjoys how the numbers of Miss Muffet's visitors keep growing.

2. Rhyming. One thing that really grabs my son's attention is rhyming. The rhyming in this book is very clever and definitely rivals Dr. Seuss's best works.

3. Rhythm. This book is easy to read quickly. Not that the book is short, but that the words flow extremely well. As a result, even an 18 month old doesn't have time for attention to wander.

4. Color. The illustrations are full of color and wonderfully illustrate the story. Looking at the pictures is as much fun as reading the story.

5. Story. The story is interesting! My son is excited by each page every time we read the book.

This book, on it's first reading, became one of my son's favorites. I even look forward to reading it!

Magical Hands is a wonderful story of a man who loves his friends. To show his friends how much he cares, he makes a birthday wish come true for each friend. He finds through this experience that giving is better than receiving...although receiving feels pretty good too! A great story to teach children that with very simple acts, they can affect others lives for the better.

Reaches the head, heart, and hand.

This book was shared with me in one of my children literature college classes. I fell in love with the book! It is great for all ages. This book touches the heart and teaches children (and adults) how to care and love for others in an unselfish way. It teaches all to actively engage in serving our fellow man with out any thought of personal reward. It also encourages people to reach out to others and better the lives of those around us. This book is essential in teaching morals. It is a must in every home and classroom. Please reprint it!!!!

Perfect first book!! My son is 5 months old and loves this book. The bright colors and rhythmic flow of the silly words are just wonderful. Not too long, not too short. We renewed this as a library book three times before we broke down and bought it. We are also giving copies to a few friends this Christmas. Our eight month old LOVES this book. The bright pictures and rhymes just mesmerize her. Another nice feature is that it is a board book, yet larger in size than most board books. She loves to turn the pages. She gets excited just LOOKING at this book. Highly recommended for little ones.

The book is greatly entertaining to toddlers.

This book might seem silly to the adult at first, but the more you read it to your requesting toddler the more it starts to make sense. A shy hippo is lead unknowingly through different situations to eventually arrive at his birthday party. The colors are attention grabbing and the tone you develop while reading it aloud becomes as entertaining to you as to your listener.

One of the BEST books I've ever known. Thoroughly researched and beautifully compiled, it's a work that springs from a deep connection with the Earth. Excellent for enthusiasts of the wild foods and medicines of the northeast--but applicable to other regions, as well. The recipes (for both plants and animals) use primarily native American ingredients.

For anyone who loves the theatre and is either a kid, or one at heart (and who isn't) PAMELA'S FIRST MUSICAL is wonderful. Not only is the story great fun in an Aunty Mame-meets-Eloise kind of way, but it is filled with many of the recognizable greats of the Broadway stage. A book to read, to keep, and to give.

The Paper Princess loves a little girl named Lucy who is good to the princess and her dog. When they find out that there is to be a fiesta later in the day, they set out to do something nice for Lucy. As the princess and her dog fly on the wind in search of the perfect gift, they encounter many adventures and only by a stroke of good fortune are returned to their little girl. Though they weren't able to bring her much in the way of a physical gift, the princess and her dog gave Lucy what she loves best of all: their adventure story.

The Paper Princess Flies Again (with Her Dog) is a precious, whimsical story. The colorful and lively illustrations blend seamlessly with the text to produce a wonderful tale. I also enjoyed that this story is set outside of the American cultural norm. This is not the first of the Paper Princess tales, but that fact doesn't detract from the story. It only leaves me and my children hoping to pick up the other Paper Princess titles.

Armchair Interviews says: A delightful, entertaining read.

Elisa Kleven explains on the back flap of "The Paper Princess Flies Again (with her Dog!)" than when she finished reading "The Paper Princess Finds Her way" to a group of children they asked her what would happened next to the princess and her new paper dog. She wrote and illustrated this third story in the series to find out and to "inspire children to draw their own paper characters and to give those characters stories and worlds." After reading this book I have little doubt that Kleven has succeeded in her objective.

This enchanting story is set in Mexico, where a girl named Lucy loves a paper princess who is not thicker than a leaf but who is full of stories. Although the paper princess has traveled far from the girl who first drew her and the boy who gave her wings, she now has a dress like the sky and a dog. Lucy agrees he is a good dog, but since he looks a little plain she decides to paint him a colorful jacket. The dog does not think he needs a jacket given his warm brown coat, but then Lucy explains he needs it because they are going to have a fiesta that night. In appreciation for the coming party, the princess and her dog decide they should find something nice for Lucy. But when they find a red paper flag that they imagine to be a flying carpet, it whisks them up into the air and off into a new adventure.

Traveling on a kite, a tumbleweed, and a sailboat, the paper princess and her dog end up in a surprising place to make Lucy's fiesta quite memorable. Kleven's artwork consists of beautiful multi-media collages that bring alive her characters. "The Paper Princess Flies Again (with her Dog!)" represents both the desire of children to venture out and discover the world as well as the joy of returning to a warm and loving home (especially when there is a new dress and a crown or a new jacket involved). Granted, in the 21st century the idea of making a paper princess or anything else you can think of seems rather quaint, but that is probably why this book is so charming. Kleven works in so many varied textures, shapes and colors into her artwork (look at all the details in the two-page spread of the desert and the ocean) that you cannot imagine her young readers not being inspired to follow suit.

I love this book!

This is the latest in the adventures of the paper princess and it's as wonderful as the other two. I love the character of the dog and how the princess' cheerful and brave optimism plays against his more timid nature. It's a great book to read aloud and my kids were totally taken in by the story and cheered at the ending. We also love the two earlier books and they've become favorites that we read over and over again (my two year old now "reads" them to himself). Each of the three books has a very distinctive plot so they don't suffer from being bland imitations of each other. It's a rare author who can take a character and expand her world as successfully as Elisa Kleven does. We can't wait for the princess' next adventure!

This book was great. The action was never ending in this book and there was always something going on but what I loved about it was that though there was a lot of different things going on, it all connected somehow so it wasn't just action to fill in the book.

I also liked that you get to see and know more about Ross, River Bend's quietest ranch hand. Before, he was just someone there but you felt like you really didn't know him and this book let you see a little more of him.

This is a MUST read for any Phantom Stallion book. It has more pages then the last few new ones have been too. This is deffinatly not a boring book!
