Advent Books

I gave this book to my two year old for his birthday which is right before Christmas, he loves it, and we have to read it at least three times a day. Since he loved it, I got three more of the books in this series for him for Christmas. Each book has over 50 flaps and he has already memorized them all. We love this series.

My four year old son is obsessed with construction machines, and is also looking forward to Christmas. This book unites Christmas and construction -- what a rare find! It also has lift-the-flaps, which my two year old daughter loves. Something for everyone! Now I want to collect the other titles in the series!

I own the entire set of Days of the Lord which covers the Sunday readings of Years A,B,and C, Advent, Lent and Easter, and I finally got this volume which is a commentary on the Solemnities and Feasts of the liturgical year. In all of the volumes is a wealth of insight regarding the readings for any particular Sunday or holy day. It is not casual reading but simple enough for the laity to understand. I agree that this is a great resource for ministers and would creat sparks to start a homily with. But I also believe that for anyone who seriously wants to prepare and understand the Liturgy of the Word, this is an excellent tool. It puts you in the right disposition for Mass. As a Lector, it also helps me put more expression in my reading because I understand what it is all about. I highly recommend this and all the other volumes of this set.

Since the revision of the Roman Lectionary, scriptural based preaching has become the ideal and the norm. Unfortunately, many preachers find it difficult to make connections with all the readings for a given Sunday or Feast Day. The Days of the Lord series is not an exegetical commentary, but rather a guide for insights into what the Church desires to be preached from its selection of readings. The text is clear and easy to read. It provides some exegesis to ground the readings in the thought of the biblical world. But it also includes enough poetry and symbolic language to allow a good homilist to use these readings to speak to the people of today. These books are a great help in constructing a lectionary-based homily or sermon, thereby achieving the goals set forth by the bishops in their pastoral instruction on preaching.

This is an entertaining and interesting story which, according to the authors, is true. It is about a basset hound who steals a Christmas ham, winds up having her stomach pumped, and giving birth to puppies! An extra bonus is the story in Spanish at the bottom of each page. Little kids with dogs will enjoy this book.

This is a terrific book! The crafts shown inside are not Disney related, and most of them are useful gifts like pencil holders and bird feeders etc. -- not just things that sit there looking pretty and gathering dust. Great for kids of all ages and budgets of all sizes.

I just checked this book at the library and it is a must to buy. The ideas are fun and unique. I know my kids 2 and 5 will love the characters and the presentation of the crafts. I can't wait to get crafting for Christmas. Happy crafting!

This book answers those nagging questions one often has pertaining to the motives of Biblical characters. It provides an easy-to-read explanation of political and cultural issues which influenced behaviors, attitudes, and actions--issues which tend to baffle us and rob us of the ability to fully understand the Bible's content. There is one fictional scene which will offend Christians who know their Bible and Savior intimately. Indeed, the author himself contradicts the fictional incident later in the book with yet more fictional verbage. It is a minor transgression considering the value of the writing as a whole. I recommend this book to all who seek the truth. You won't be able to put it down.

This book literally drove me to my knees - I still don't know if the author is a Christian or not - I just know it touched my broken heart and spirit. If I could force people to read it, I would. It rocked my world that much.

Great books for children. Julie Andrews Edwards and her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton have created a book and stories that area beautiful gift to the children of the world. I recommend this series to all.

With the Christmas holiday coming up, this beautiful full color book is a perfect way to get in a holiday mood. Each of the illustrations is a work of art and the poems that go with them are so meaningful. The book would make a great gift for almost anyone on your list. Melanie Clifford is a very talented artist and poet.

This is a warm, wonderful way to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. The inspiring, heartfelt poetry and lovely original illustrations make this delightful reading. Our whole family enjoyed it.

Eight Tiny Reindeer is a magical book to be shared with the beautiful children in your life.

I was simply captivated by this gentle, non-commercial story-a truly original narrative that took me to that peaceful,northern forest. The unique illustrations capture the quiet beauty of nature, and the wonder of precious new life. It seemed to answer a question that I hadn't realized I wanted to know! This book will be a traditional read for our family from now on.

The pictures in the book are amazing and the story is very cute. My 5 1/2 year old son loves it!

I initially puchased this book for its wonderful illustrations, but when I got home and read it, the story is quite entertaining. Tingle the elf gets into some trouble while perfecting an airplane for Santa to give to the children on Christmas Eve.... he falls asleep inside the airplane and ends up in the hands of a child! The adventures continue as he tries to make his way back to the North Pole. The pictures are bold, bright, and vivid... they actually held my son's attention! I highly recommend this colorful Chirstmas tale.

My family and I (two grown girls who still love stories) shared this book over Christmas. We took turns reading it to one another. I must say, this is highly recommended. This book has a certain, how shall I say, slyness to it -- it covers many "modern" topics: divorce, IKEA, and the general difficulty of "keeping it together" in a modern world. Nonetheless, here is this almost anachronistic figure of Mr. Moose, who speaks with his arch language and his old-fashioned manners, and tells quite a story.

It also presents Santa (Father Christmas) in a rather unusual light, not at all the timeworn "ho, ho, ho!"

Above all, this book captures the childlike spirit of Christmas, the magic and the wistfulness. It belongs in your Christmas box.
