Delightful View into Inuit Culture
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.

This is a wonderful story which conveys the resourcefulness of children. More than that, Michael provides a view from within the Inuit culture. He illuminates for those of us who did not grow up on the Arctic Circle what it is to live in that harsh environment. At the same time, he shows us how alike we all are: enjoying the holidays and a good baseball game with friends.
Vladyana's magnificent art is an added bonus.
I bought this book after hearing Michael tell the story at the International Reading Association teachers' conference in 1999. Since that time, it has become one of my favorites, as well as a favorite of my students and my colleagues.

My son is 2 yrs. old. He absolutely loved this book. He carried it around for days. Even though it says the reading level is higher we can make it all the way through it at least once. The pages are very brightly colored and inviting. My son has a blast trying to find all the flaps to lift.

Our 2 year old niece is getting Bear's Berry Christmas book from us this Christmas. Bear and his friends are already favorites of hers, and this book brings a seasonal adventure to life for her to learn and enjoy. She loves interactive books and will eagerly anticipate what she will find underneath each flap -- and this book contains 52 flaps! It combines holiday traditions with a lesson of the real spirit of Christmas. Bear, Teelo, Ojo, Pip & Pop decorate the tree, wrap gifts, bake cookies and share the importance of spending time with old friends and giving to others. I don't know if a 2 year old will get all of the lessons out of this book, but I do know that Kelsey will read it over and over and each time learn something new. This is a great interactive book with sturdy cardboard pages to last for years to come.

It's the Holiday Spirit That Counts

Review Date: 2006-02-12
Christmas is coming to the Big Blue House, but it seems like the minds of our friends Tutter, Ojo, Treelo and Pip and Pop just aren't on the holidays. They keep stealing glances out the window and are kinda sad because it's dry and windy outside and there's no snow.

Bear helps them all to see that even without snow, it's the holiday spirit that truly makes Christmas great. Another wonderful, and original, "Bear in the Big Blue House" story. The characters look like they do on the TV show, but the rest of the illustrations are original and done by a veteran pro at illustrating Muppet books --- Tom Brannon.

Elaine Stritch is an excellent choice for this audiobook. I have loved The Best Christmas Pageant Ever since childhood and now am delighted to get this CD for my daughter to enjoy. She loved The Best Halloween Ever that I read to her and I think she will love this collection as well.

The Herdmans teach us the true meaning of Christmas! And of life too.

The Cat's Point of View

Review Date: 2007-01-07
This is a story about a cat and a girl who move to the city. The cat's name is Puss and the girl's name is Jenni. Puss gets lost and Jenni has to find him. The chapters alternate between Puss and Jenni's points of view. I like the fact that you can read what Puss is thinking. This is one of my favorite books that I have ever read.

Touching Holiday Story for Young Readers
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-12
Young Puss is a country cat, and has been all his life. He adores small-town living, as he knows all the animals who surround him, and has his own very territories. That's why he's shocked when his owner, Jenni, moves him to a city filled with traffic, and unfriendly people. Puss quickly decides that this isn't the life for him, and heads towards home. However, unbeknownst to Puss, home is over 100 miles away, and might never be found by a small cat. When Jenni realizes that her beloved Puss - short for Puss in Boots, thanks to his all black body, and white feet - she becomes frantic and begins her search for him. While at the same time, Puss realizes how much he misses Jenni, and frantically tries to find his way back to his new home in the city. Throughout it all, Jenni meets many city-dwellers, who try to help her find Puss, and realizes that maybe the city isn't that bad after all.

Being a cat lover, and a fan of touching Christmas stories, I was happy to find both elements in Sylvia Green's THE BEST CHRISTMAS EVER. Puss is a determined young cat who triumphs over the tragedy of getting himself lost. Jenni is a kind young girl who wants nothing but Puss back as her Christmas gift. Together they create quite a duo. With fabulous supporting characters who bring the story even more to life, THE BEST CHRISTMAS EVER is essential holiday reading.

Father Bear has had a bad year and there is so little money that the Bear family does not expect Christmas presents. But when Christmas morning comes, there ARE presents under the tree and little footprints in the flour snow around the base of the tree. The presents themselves are surprising in their simplicity. Here is a picture book that speaks to what Christmas should be.
The pictures are simple and the colors muted and that fits the story perfectly. This book is destined to become one of my all-time holiday books - and I have a lot of them.

I bought this book for my mother and my sister. When we were children, my mother always read "Twas the Night Before Christmas" to us on Christmas Eve. This book mimics the rhyme and theme of the poem, but replaces the text with fun rhymes that acknowledges the hard work that Mrs Claus puts into Christmas (as Moms know, Santa's efforts are nothing without his wife's support!). I loved the illustrations, they are whimsical and colorful. I even purchased a matching ornament for my mother and she is just thrilled with it! I just purchased another copy for a friend of mine for next year!

Mr. Rodrigue has done it again. "A Blue Dog Christmas" is not only filled with wonderful pictures of his newest Blue Dogs, but it is also a heartwarming story that brought back some of my own childhood holiday memories. It is a fantastic book for adults as well as children, good for bedtime reading.

A must read for all Anne LaBastille fans! Author does a compelling interview with Woodswoman series author Dr. Anne LaBastille from her farm at the edge of the Adirondacks. Other stories include some really interesting stories about women in the wilderness overcoming negative feelings about their bodies. Very inspiring. Could also be used for coursework in women's studies or women's literature classes.

PLEASE NOTE, THIS BOX SET IS SNOWMEN AT NIGHT + SNOWMEN AT CHRISTMAS
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-07
This box set lists as "both Snowmen books." Not very helpful. The two books enclosed are Snowmen at Night, and Snowmen at Christmas. So don't make the mistake of ordering Snowmen At Christmas through amazon's "deal" portion of this webpage!

Anyhoo, these two books are WONDERFUL. The artwork is absolutely enthralling, and the rhyming stories are adorable. It tells the story of what snowmen do, after you go to bed, and after you go to bed at Christmas. The paintings are stunning, and include Mark Buehner's signature "hidden figures," ie, there are Santas, bunnies, and dinosaurs hidden in many of the paintings. This adds a fun dimension to an already wonderful set of books.

I highly recommend these two books, because they will captivate your child, and you will love to read such beautiful books to your child.

Truly a treasure.
